“Hotel still getting things worked out, but getting there”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

Enjoyed staying at the Arthawaka Hotel for two nights in April 2013.

Staff are super friendly and even though many do not speak English terribly well, they are unbelievably helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

I got the impression the place is still bedding in. Some of the staff are a bit inexperienced (which I suppose is no surprise at all given how rapidly Myanmar is opening up for tourism) and the chap who I assume was the manager always was on hand to supervise and step in if necessary.

Am particularly grateful for their flexibility in letting me check in early on day one and check out late on the final day. One does get very dirty cycling around, so being able to have a shower before heading for the airport was very, very helpful.

Rooms are nice and certainly good value for money. One or two odd things like no shower curtain and rather over pretentious bathroom fittings, but overall excellent.

I hired a bike each day. Nice, new bikes. Bit girly ladies bikes with no gears and basket on the front, but seems that is the same as you get everywhere, so I think I got a good deal.

Hotel restaurant is OK, but nothing special. Much, much better option is to walk a few hundred metres towards town and on the left is a little open-air restaurant offering Burmese and Chinese food. Fabulous place! For less than 5,000K got wonderful chicken curry (dishes just kept coming!), drinks, introduction to the chef and a front row seat for the mobile disco making it's way up and down Kayay Street!

Give it a year or two to get things all working a bit more smoothly and will be 5/5 then.

This hotel was perfect for us while we toured around Bagan. Nice staff, decent breakfast, clean rooms, quick internet, and a salt water pool. It was within walking distance to new Bagan restaurants. Biking from here to the temples in Old Bagan was within a day's work too. Great value for money.

The hotel is absolutely fine, relatively cheap for Bagan but it's clean and comfortable and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I spent 3 nights there, hired a bike (don't expect the latest Specialized models) from the hotel each day to explore and got tired thighs, hot and lost but had a fantastic time. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk from a few restaurants and bars. Bagan is amazing, go!

Great spot to explore Old Bagan and lacquer village. I ate at the in house restaurant one night which was good food at reasonable price. There are many alternatives down the road. Good bikes for hire at K3000 per day.
Happy with clean room that was serviced each day. AC was ok but not super effective on 38 day but not complaining as the pool cooled you off after hard day exploring.
Staff were super friendly and genuine. Enjoyed my 3 nights here. Thanks

Room was fine, but hotel custom is to leave windows open between guests. We did not notice, and had an awful night with outside noise and smelling other people's cigarette smoke. To his credit, the manager next day was very apologetic, sent us a tray of complimentary fruit. He is there 7AM to 10PM, and the staff generally most obliging. Pleasant pool overlooked by all the rooms, still no disturbance when you want to sleep. Worst aspect is food, Asian variety is your best choice. You can get local wine by the glass. Beware of strange custom: need to order your dish 1-hr in advance, otherwise wait is even longer than usual. If you want to eat out, your only decent alternative is the Green Elephant in New Bagan (15-min walk). Old Bagan, where most of the good restaurants are, require a taxi ride.

the rooms are small but nice, well screened for mosquito, unfortunately our aircon was very noisy, we where offered a different room after unpacking, but decided to stay with open windows. The lobby is nice but if you sit there you have to ask the staff to but the air conditioning on. I got a lung problem so this tends to be important for me. The pool is nice, but the breakfast is very simple and the restaurant looks like a army canteen, staff is friendly and helpful. All up it is value for money.

Room Tip: go to the Hotel across the street on the bend for a much better feed and nicer restaurant

The hotel is really nice. Staff very friendly, rooms spacious and clean and a nice feel to it.

Free wifi is available in the lobby and they do have bikes for rent. In hindsight I wished I had rented elsewhere though. The only reason being they have no gears and with the hotel being at the other end of new Bagan it was quite tiring in the heat and humidity.

On that note the location is really the only sloght downside to this place. To be honest though the same could probably be said for most places in new Bagan. And with accommodation limited and expensive in old Bagan then I was more than happy with this place.
