“Excellent hotel in Bagan-do not hesitate!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

If you're comign to Myanmar looking for 5 star european/wester luxury you're out of luck..if you're looking for the next best thing...you've come to Amazing Bagan and rightfully so.

A perfect location to explore the pagodas, markets, enamel factory, gem shows and more.

Overall the hotel is very very clean and the service is excellent. Over all the hotels we stayed in Myanmar this was our 2nd favorite, with the first being Traders in Yangon.

Spa was horrible...a room that was converted for monks to sleep in with a dozen cots on the floor...that was what they called the 'massage' room. I would skip that and have laundry done instead which came back perfectly!

Great place, lovely room, fabulous pool area, top notch breakfast. It is a joy to stay at.

Two words of warning:

- it's along a LONG drive and is 20 minutes walk from anywhere - so if you want to wander around before choosing somewhere to eat in the evening, it's taxis or a decent, but possible, walk. Also not walking distance from any of the temples (well, maybe 1 or 2...)

- it does attract the tour groups.

The Amazing Bagan Resort is a good choice. It is nearer to the airport than to the temple sites, but that means that it is also a quieter, calmer place than some of the more centrally located resorts, something we appreciated after a long day of visiting the sites. We stayed in a suite bungalow, which was spacious enough, but a bit in need of sprucing up, especially in the bathroom area. Everything was neat and clean, but the decor was a little faded and tired. The breakfast buffet is ample and tasty and is served in a lovely covered outdoor area. We also ate a couple of times in the restaurant, which was adequate but not great. The thing that really makes this resort stand out is the level of service. The Burmese manager is relatively new (about 1 year) and seems determined to ensure that his guests have a good stay. He has his eye on every aspect of the resort and is seemingly indefatigable, always there to help out with suggestions, bookings, etc. We arrived very early in the morning, and in less than an hour, he had arranged for a guide and driver. Thanks to him, we had an excellent introduction to Bagan, using the services of a local guide, Aung Kyaw Oo, whom we highly recommend (email: bepeacebgn121@gmail.com). He also arranged for a balloon expedition with Balloons Over Bagan, which was also excellent and preferable to the larger groups catered to by the other local ballooning company. The following day, he advised us to rent electric bikes to do some exploring on our own, which turned out to be great advice, as it enabled us to go to some of the more out-of-the-way temples where we were sometimes the only visitors.

I can only say positive things about our experience at the Amazing Bagan Resort. Granted, we didn't stay very long and we were also out for most of the day to see the amazing sites in and around Bagan, but this hotel is extremely close to the airport, a short taxi or e-bike or normal bike (if you've got the legs for the 8km to Old Bagan) ride away from all of the great sites. We didn't use the swimming pool but it always looked very clean and relaxing, at least according to the snores we heard from those that were lounging on its long chairs enjoying the sun. The staff were incredibly useful, booking our last minute flights to Mandalay with the local airline, organising day trips with local drivers who were very knowledgeable of where to go for the best sunrise and/or sunset view, and where to eat local food. I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends.

Bagan is Myanmar’s premiere archeological site and Amazing Bagan Hotel, located in a quiet wooded area, is the perfect place to relax after a day of temple viewing. Guests arrive at Amazing Bagan Resort and Golf Club via a long tree-lined roadway. The hotel has a lovely large pool for cooling off in the middle of the day and a golf course for those looking for a divergent activity.

Accommodations in the main building are large and well-appointed with the Suite Bungalows adding more luxuries. The 20 Suite Bungalows and four Corner Suites at the Amazing Bagan Resort are designed in the traditional style of ancient Burmese architecture. The extensive breakfast on the garden patio is included and so is the internet. Before dinner head to the rooftop terrace with a panoramic view of the area and watch the sunset. In the evening dine in the Green House Restaurant which offers a wide selection of local, Asian, and European choices. Most evening guests are entertained with a traditional puppet show.

Plan to visit Spa Thukha for even more relaxation. The excellent and attentive staff of Amazing Began Resort will arrange sightseeing tours, traditional carriage and cart rides, and try to meet all the desires of their guests. For more information check Amazing-hotels.com.

Room Tip: Check out their villas and great for golf lovers.

Although the hotel is beginning to show its age and in some ways isn't a "true" 4 star hotel (it needs a spruce up on the hardwoods, walls, doors and hardware throughout, and the bathrooms really need a redo), the service was "over and above 5 star", so for this reason I give it a 4 star review. The hotel is VERY reasonably priced.

We had just spent 8 days in Yangon and had planned to come to Bagan afterwards. I chose the Amazing Bagan because of the 5 "top" resorts I had e-mailed, each some 4-5 times, it was the ONLY one that responded to any of my emails. I must thank Nawe Nawe in Yangon for all her hard work in our behalf. She was immeasurably helpful in securing our reservation, not only for the hotel but she even arranged for our flights to Bagan on KBZ Airways and for our private guide and taxi driver during our stay. She even came to our hotel in Yangon once we arrived for the payment, so I would not be inconvenienced and have to find my way around in Yangon to her office. THAT is real customer service! (Thank you so much Nawe Nawe you are a gem).

As for the hotel itself. It is just a short drive from the airport to the hotel grounds. It is secluded, set a bit off from the city center of Bagan (good thing, because Bagan is noisy), set down a scenic tree lined dirt road. The grounds are peaceful and beautifully landscaped. You enter the hotel to a lovely vaulted lobby and are greeted by smiling faces from the moment you get out of the taxi until your check in. Mingalabar! Everyone here was just as kind and lovely as can be. The hotel is very asian inspired in the decor it feels almost like you are in Bali or Indonesia. Lots of woods and light colors. Rooms are off both sides of the lobby/atrium and the hotel is 3 stories high. We were on the 3rd floor - be sure to get a room on the top floor best views are from up on high).

We had reserved a king room. The bed was an oversized king bed and very comfortable. Tastefully furnished with dark woods and white linens there were 2 chairs and a small table by the large oversized window with sweeping views over the palm trees of some of the ruins, and there was also a desk and chair opposite the bed and 2 night tables on each side of the bed. There is a TV with remote opposite the bed as well.

The bathroom was sadly, dated, it definitely needs to be updated as its age is really showing. The shower is in the tub not a separate space. You could hear the pigeons up in the roof above our bathroom cooing during the daytime. The toiletries were very nice (please leave the bottles, they are refilled and reused). The towels were soft, as were the linens. There were robes provided and flip flops as well in the room.

2 small bottles of water are provided for brushing your teeth. If you would like more water it is only a whopping 1500 kyatt or about $1.50 USD for a huge bottle to drink for the day if you get it out of your refrigerator, or only 1000 kyatt of $1USD if you get it in the bar on your way out. There is also fresh fruit in your minibar/refrigerator. There is a coffee / tea station with an electric kettle on a shelf above the mini fridge. A small safe in the closet is also available to store your items.

We had some minor issues with the key and our door lock (the knob was pretty wobbly and the key slightly bent). But it always managed to resolve itself.

The pool area was quite nice but we never had a chance to really enjoy it as we were too busy seeing Bagan and the surrounding areas, which are not to be missed on a trip to Myanmar! There were plenty of lounge chairs around the pool though and it is in a central location on the grounds.

Breakfast buffet was fabulous! Omelets made to order (or eggs if you prefer) they even crisped up the bacon for my husband and made fresh "pancakes", which really were crepes. The buffet was pretty decent with plenty to offer to eat, some asian inspired, some american and european style.

Now for the important part, after a long day of walking/hiking in Bagan and climbing stupas and pagodas etc... you have to get a thai massage! I have had many massages in my life but this was my first "thai" massage. There is no official "spa", so they come to your room for the massages and you just lie on the bed (or sit). Both my husband and I scheduled a 2 hour thai massage and foot reflexology treatment (he fell asleep and was snoring after a while). The girls were great. I felt like I was dough being "kneaded" but man the next day I felt invigorated! A different kind of massage but sooo worth it! And frankly you will never get massages at these prices anywhere else in the world! So schedule one for each night of your visit we did! (They offer them until 10pm).

We dined at the restaurant one evening for dinner and were able to enjoy the "puppet show" that is put on nightly in the dining hall. Food was actually pretty good and very reasonably priced. Nice to have entertainment while you eat!

All in all I would GLADLY stay at The Amazing Bagan again when I return. I had a thoroughly wonderful time. Great food, fabulous staff (please be sure to take note of the "tip box" for the staff located on the far end of the reception desk, they worked so hard and made our stay SO enjoyable we just had to leave them all something for all the hard work they did for us).

I found out just before our departure that the "buildings" around the grounds that look like small "temples" were actually rooms, I wish I had checked those out during our stay they looked pretty sweet and perhaps they had the better bathrooms (it would have been worth paying a little more for that since this hotel is so reasonably priced).

As a word of note: They are now able to take credit cards (VISA preferred but Mastercard accepted too) and they can charge you in USD which makes it even better!

Room Tip: 3 Floor rooms have the best views

As other reviewers have said, this hotel is some way off the main road. We walked to the main road/Nyuang U a couple of times, tried it once it in the dark but it was too scary/potentially dangerous! We also tried to use the hotel bicycles but they were very poorly maintained and not useable. We rented pedal bikes from Nyuang U and noticed that most people used the electric bikes/scooters to get around.

Hotel room was perfectly adequate, if not a little dark/badly lit. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
