Amazing Bagan Resort
Ranked #5 of 52 Hotels in Bagan
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 26, 2011

Having stayed at the Amazing Hotel in Ngapali (lovely beach resort) we were pleased to book in to the Amazing in Bagan. Same nice, cheerful staff, extremely helpful, nice rooms, pleasant restaurant - and a swimming pool with loungers.

People come to Bagan principally for its extraordinary Temples, scattered over a very wide area within a few miles of the hotel. It's easy to take a taxi to explore them (not all as you'd need a week, and soon be pagoded-out), but to see a good selection, and climb up them (some have staircases, some don't).

Obviously most people are just staying 2/3 nights on their tour of Myanamar, so it's a come and go hotel - but very nicely run, and the keen staff make your stay most enjoyable.

-Excellent service, very friendly and helpful staff
-Location is a bit far away from everything, but that makes it very, very quiet
-Beautiful hotel garden
-Nice and big swimming pool
-The restaurant serves excellent food and isn't too expensive
-Very nice European style breakfast with a few Asian dishes
-Aircon in my room wasn't powerful enough for the big room, a bit hot at night
-Big rooms with very nice bathrooms, fairly clean, but I saw a few spider nests near the ceiling
-The teak floor in my room was quite worn out, other than that it was great
-Free Internet, business centre, laundry (a bit expensive)
-The hotel can arrange trips like e.g horse cart ride around the temple area for 13-15 USD for a full day

This hotel is great to see the best of Bagan. It is situated in Nyaung Oo. It's about 4km to Old Bagan which is easy to do on the bikes that the hotel provide (although my husband's pedal did fall off!). The hotel's pool is much needed and appreciated after a busy day sight seeing. The rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable, although the water wasn't always hot - but hey, this is Burma. Breakfast was served outside and there was a large selection. Staff are friendly and helpful. Nyaung Oo has a good selection of restaurants. To get to them however, involves a long dark walk (over 1km) or a rather expensive taxi that the hotel offered to arrange. We chose again to go on the bikes - they had lights so were suitable for use at night. You can of cause eat at the hotel too.

Offering very good value for money, this attractively designed hotel has its own golf course and is located near many of the temples for which Bagan is famous. The rooms are a good size and the beds seem to vary but are reasonably comfortable. Breakfast is good and varied, and the dinner is also of a high standard, offering Myanmar, Chinese or Western cuisine. In our case, staying 4 nights, we were given 2 complimentary dinners which was a bit amazing. The staff are very friendly and helpful. WiFi is available free of charge in reception but is exceedingly slow, if working at all. Outside, there is a large pool with loungers and a drinks bar. The only down side to the hotel is that it is not near anything and a taxi costs 5,000 Kyats to get anywhere. But, then again, there is not really a town in our sense of the word, merely scattered dwellings and a few stalls along the side of a dusty road, and the only exploring you will be doing is among the 2,700 temples which is why you probably came. A horse and cart costs 15,000 Kyats per day; a taxi 35,000 to explore among the temples. The hotel can arrange these, and the cost is the same whether they book it or you do. The hotel does provide complimentary bicycles, with which it is possible to get to and view the temples.

This is an excellent hotel with a great restaurant - elegant front lobby and rooms at the suite level. The complimentary outdoor breakfast was very good - excellent ambiance with good customer service and focus.

They upgraded me to a suite due to minor difficulties in the room --- the duty manager and his staff responded immediately though i offered to stay in the room when the a/c difficulties were fixed. Threw in a free 8 or 10 course dinner for one of the two nights I stayed there.

Bagan with its 4000+ pagodas from the 11th - 13th century was a delight. Strongly recommended especially a sunset view from one of the taller pagodas.

Overall, all visitors to Myanmar should remember to bring crisp, totally unmarked, preferably unused dollar bills as the slightest of creases/folds, pen markings, ink stains makes it extremely difficult to be used. Currency conversion is a major issue because of these circumstances peculiar/particular to Myanmar.

Internet connections in Myanmar are slow and spotty for obvious reasons.

Overall, this is a country worth visiting for its cultural heritage as long as you are willing to be uncritical and apolitical.

This was one of the cities where inbound phone calls from the US proved to be a problem. Outbound calls were $8 - yes $8 a minute.

Room Tip: Enjoy and relax in the hotel after a wonderful day

Amazing Bagan was a very nice secluded place to stay and see Bagan from. The resort staff were very attentive and the rooms were the nicest we had in Burma. The only downside is that it is not walking distance from any town, so you have to hire a taxi or horsecart to get to town. However it's not very expensive to do so.

Also the breakfast each morning was great.
