the brand new bagan lodge is a beauty from the minute you pull up. the open air lobby and pool area is really spectacular but welcoming at the same time with all of the warm wood and marble. what set this place apart, for me, however, was the people. the level of service is comparable to what you find at any ritz or four seasons, but instead of it having that level of 'corporate professionalism' that you get when you stay at a ritz or four seasons, it has a charm and innocence about it. whether that's because it's only been there for such a short time or because the people that are taking care of you are mostly locals from the surrounding areas of bagan/myanmar, i don't know, but they are truly happy that you're there with them, and you really feel that they are happy to take care of you in any way they can. their smiles were always so warm and friendly and they 'lit up' as soon as we walked by. my sister and i stayed with them for three days and we were really sad to leave when our time was up!

A stay here puts you in New Bagan area and quite a fair bit away from the rest of the other places. Overall very nice surroundings with landscapes and gardens. Relatively quiet although you will hear rumblings of your neighbor when you are placed with a connecting room. Nice touch of providing tea time / evening snacks every evening e.g. chocolate cake, sweets etc

Understand this place is new i.e. less than 1 year old and built to keep up with the throngs of tourists filling into Mynamar & Bagan. Some "newly opened" problems are to be expected for e.g. they were not ready to deal with 15 hungry breakfast diners at one go (some of us didn't get our food in the end), inconsistent wifi (almost true for all of Myanmar), slight design flaws in their chalets (some bathrooms were flooding and had a distinct drainage smell if you don't keep the fans on for the night), spa only available at designated spa hut (inexperienced Thai masseuse which adopted Burmese approach with some Thai stretching elements to the massage), and last but not least, similar obsession with new mint US dollar notes for payment. I didn't like very much having to close the shutters for the windows every day (can be as many as 6 shutters for 1 room) due to privacy concerns but some may find less bothersome.

We stayed at Bagan Lodge for 2 nights in a deluxe king room and can highly recommend it. The hotel is located just outside of New Bagan (2 min cycle), on the main road in from the airport. The hotel is very new, however the staff are well-trained and incredibly helpful. There were none of the usual ‘new hotel’ jitters.

The rooms are large, well-appointed and very clean. The pool was a godsend in the middle of a hot day of temple-hopping. Having cycled past many of the other hotels in Bagan, we were very grateful to have access to a pool.

Our rate didn’t include breakfast, however we opted to pay for it (hotels always get you either way), and were pleased with the selection and quality. At USD15/person, however, it was quite expensive and given the lack of other options nearby, really should be included for all guests as a matter of course.

The hotel is currently undergoing an expansion, however the noise is minimal and limited to those rooms at the extremities of the property. There remains an issue (which others have spoken of below) with the smell from septic tanks along the walkways, however it is minor and is not present in public areas such as the pool.

A few pointers to remember with every hotel in Myanmar. ATMs are now prevalent everywhere (including throughout Yangon, up and down Inle Lake and in Bagan). They still charge a fee for foreign card withdrawals. Many more places now accept credit card, although some charge a fee for their use (Bagan Lodge does not). The rates for USD are more standard (USD100 : 982,000 kyat at January 2014) across the country. Internet access is widely available, and always free, but is SLOW. Expect it to be all but useless at peak times. Domestic flights must be booked through a local travel agent. We used (and can recommend) Myanmar Shalom Travel (salesdept@myanmarshalom.com). All these situations are fluid and will change rapidly over the coming months and years, but the information is accurate as at January 2014.

This is a brand new hotel with terrific bedrooms which look like safari lodges. Very comfortable and I wanted to take the pillows with me when I left! The pool area was great and the grounds, even at this early stage, were looking good. We had one meal in the Lodge which was excellent and I made use of the spa. A foot massage at the end of a very dusty day was perfect.
The only downside to this lovely place were the smelly drains which rather spoilt the walk through the grounds. However, the problem didn't reach the rooms. This might be more of an issue later in the season when the temperature goes up.

All the staff were delightful and I would certainly recommend.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked good.

We stayed for 5 nights.

Positives:
1. The rooms/villas are very well designed and decorated, in addition to being large.
2. The service was of a very high standard with well trained hotel management professionals on duty all the time. We found all the staff spoke excellent English. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with a smile.
3. The open air design of the reception area restaurant around the swimming pool is attractive.

Negatives:
1. The location is a good 15 minutes walk outside New Bagan. Taxis in Bagan seem to charge a lot of money relative to everywhere else. We thought we were being ripped off by them sometimes, as a result of which we found ourselves walking to and from the village too often. If you're not worried by greedy taxi drivers, this will not be a problem for you.
2. The blinds in our villa (No. 2) could not be raised without calling for a member of staff to do it, but this is just a teething problem for this new hotel.

Room Tip: Room/villa 2 was pretty good. Ask for one that's semi detached.

Dear HarryB614,

Thank you for your feedback about your stay with us. Over 5 nights you get to experience everything with much more scrutiny than most other guests on a 2-night average, so your comments to Trip Advisor readers are greatly appreciated.

Bagan as I guess you can see is going to change fairly quickly, our location will most likely join up to be even closer to New Bagan as we see progress and more retail shops and restaurants opening. For now though as you mention, there are no metered taxi’s to speak of here (or in fact anywhere in Myanmar at this time) your comments are understood about the price – they are more expensive here than in Yangon! It seems a practice of trying to make 12 months money in 3 or 4 months of the year during high season still rings true – this is a process and mind-set that we are working to change. We are collaborating closely with a couple of tour agencies and also private service companies so we can negotiate better prices for our guests and also be assured about the quality of the vehicles and experience of the drivers.

We are very happy to read your feedback about the friendliness and attitude of the staff and glad that their attention and positive outlook was appreciated! Sorry for the inconvenience for the blinds in your room, these have since been fixed and all rooms double-checked to ensure we don’t see reoccurrence to this.

Once again, thank you and we hope we may have the pleasure to welcome you back again soon!

Sincerely,

The Bagan Lodge Team!

This could/should be a class hotel but, only open for a few months, there are far too many teething problems. The major problem is Noise! The chalet style rooms are all linked to the chalet next door with interconnecting doors. But the connecting door is not sound insulated and too thin which results in the feeling you are sharing your accommodation with the people next door - which you are! If they have a conversation you hear every word and can join in; all their bodily functions are relayed to you and should they switch on the television then you must listen but without seeing the picture! We asked to be moved only to be told that they are all of the same design...why on earth? Because the chalets are spread out over a large area the maids and baggage staff have been provided with walkie/talkies and early in the morning you hear them chatting to reception. The designer ha! ha! has selected chic shades of dark seaweed green for the room decor but with insufficient lighting it is gloomy. No bedside tables are supplied - the room layout virtually forbids this - so you have to use the floor (or a ledge 18 inches above the bed) for glasses, books, clock etc. Sockets are in the wrong place and few hooks provided. The dining area is charmless and gloomy at night (I was provided with a torch to read my magazine). It feels like a canteen and desperately needs some plants/lanterns etc to cheer it up. Poolside loungers had no cushions and I wont mention the pungent septic tanks. I discussed all this with the charming manager who is well aware of the shortcomings and has requested an urgent meeting with the owner to tackle all these and other problems.

Room Tip: Make certain there is no one in the adjoining room

Dear Russell898,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review, even though we were disappointed to appear have so thoroughly failed to meet with your expectations. As you know, we have only recently opened and we are still experiencing some ‘growing pains’ as the number of rooms added to our inventory doubled only days before your arrival and we hadn’t had the opportunity to test the full functionality and correctly defect these due to a late handover. We had assurances from the building contractors that these new rooms had been completed to the same specifications as the rooms in our first phase, however we have since become aware that certain aspects were compromised in order to ensure that they were completed on time. This includes the bio filtration system in a new treatment tank, which has since been rectified.

Following feedback such as yours, we have immediately taken these rooms back out of inventory and will address these matters as priority as soon as the current ‘high season’ concludes. Please rest assured that should we have been aware of these issues to the extent that you have detailed, we would not have accepted the rooms back from the contractors. These rooms will be properly insulated in preparation for future guests, which will also reduce additional noise from outside before we make them available again for sale. Your experience does not in any way reflect the quality of standards we are striving for at Bagan Lodge, we have taken the liberty already to make arrangements with your travel agent for an appropriate recompense as we discussed.

Regarding your comments about the room design, your feedback has been well noted and will be brought to the attention of the hotel owners and interior designer. Whilst it is agreed that an adjustment of the "mood" lighting in the rooms would be an asset, other elements of design you have detailed are perhaps a matter of personal taste as we have received many other positive comments about the layout of the rooms, however, guest satisfaction and practical sense will prevail here.

I am happy to note personally, that despite the only negative comments you have shared on TripAdvisor, that you did assure me that you enjoyed your time at the hotel overall and your trip to Bagan and that you were able to experience everything you have on this occasion before things begin to change.

Should we have the opportunity to welcome you back here again, please do contact me personally and I will be happy to assist you as I can.

Sincerely,

Jon Bourbaud

This hotel is very nice. Fantastic location , great room , very generous space inside , beautiful design , appropriate furniture. Impressive pool. Recently opened , you can see that they are doing a lot of effort to reach the 5 stars standard service. From my point of view , they should be focus on the service especially at the pool. Language is a lit a bit an issue. But with their smile and kindness you can enjoy your holiday for sure .The breakfast was very good. Thank you Valerio for your help . We were 7 and every day we had our table set for all of us with several different requests. They always did all the best to accommodate us. Thank thank you again and we'll come back one day. Last but not lest ...the spa. Very nice and peaceful. Thank you to all the therapists my friend and I we'll really appreciate the 2 hours treatment ... Ciao donatella

Room Tip: All of them are nice.
