“Touristic hotel in scenic surroundings”
Reviewed November 23, 2013

This touristic hotel is built in scenic surroundings, on the outer periphery of Bagan, the city of 87000(?) pagodas. Ideal for leisurely holiday to visit some of the thousands of pagodas, big and small. The hotel is kind of cluster of small cottages, and not a modern multiple-storied building, having it's own charm.
The rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, but no air-cons. So choose this hotel considering the weather conditions. Similarly, the W-Fi link in the rooms was almost missing. One had to go to reception or dining area for Internet usage.
The breakfast was pretty good, with the chef will to meet special requirements. The management and staff was cordial and cooperative.

From my balcony I looked directly at hundreds of pagodas - just spectacular.
This is a lovely hotel, nice rooms, superb location - as close to the temples and pagodas as you can get, but don't eat here. To go to any restaurant you need a taxi or one of the many horse-carts (very uncomfortable). After trying dinner the day we arrived and lunch the next day, we gave up on the hotel restaurant. Breakfast is included and they tell you it is at 6am. With luck, the staff will wander in, half asleep, at about 615 and begin preparing - and it's nothing to write home about !! It really is a shame because they have a lovely outdoor patio for dining. They need some kind of management here.

Room Tip: best is junior suite with balcony

We really enjoyed our stay at Kumudara hotel. Our room had a private balcony and views for a small, artificial lake that surrounded the building and the unique Bagan's landscape. Most of the room is decorated with wood and the wc is quite modern for what we've seen in Myanmar. The only downside is that there aren't king-sized beds, only individual ones that you can't put together.

Wifi works well but you need to access it either from the lobby or the restaurant area - note that the wifi will "close" at 9:30pm and "open" next morning at 6am.

The restaurant is very pleasant, with outdoor seating under a tree. We ended up having most of our meals there. Don't miss the 1 USD gin/whisky sour cocktails made with local beverages. If you're craving for something sweet, the banana pudding is a good choice. Main dishes are not very different from what you find in other restaurants: there is chinese and Myanmar food.

You can rent bicycles at the hotel - 3000 kyats / 3 USD for one day - and it's really advisable that you do so, as it is quite an experience to ride through the temples of Bagan.

Kumudara hotel is more like a resort than the traditional multistoreyed city hotels. It's surroundings are serene and the residences are like small cottages. It's a relatively small property, away from the hum drum of the city, but with all required amenities. The buffet breakfast was a modest spread, but the chef and manager were more than willing to cater to your needs. We are vegetarians and hence we were pleasantly surprised when the chef specially cooked some veg dishes for us.
The hotel has horse drawn carriages for visiting the pagodas, spread all over the town of Bagan.

Room Tip: All rooms are kind of independent from each other.

We spent three nights in Kumudara Hotel and enjoyed it. Great service and a neat layout with nice rooms. We could see the temples from our's Great.
Restaurant and bar is good though without a/c.(Suggestion: Don't have your breakfast in the breakfast room. It gets humid.
Only downside is that they turn off the wifi and close the restaurant/bar at 9:30 pm. Annoying not to be able to buy a drink or check e-mail after that time.

Room Tip: For some reason there was occasional wifi access in our (remote) room 707 an hour after the internet...

This was the second hotel I stayed in Bagan, in a different area, and even more secluded than the first.

On nearly every engagement with staff I felt let down – from arriving and not being permitted to check-in without a printed reservation, to requesting a Coke and being offered a visibly dented, open can, to having no staff at the pool.

The food was sub-standard with a bleak breakfast spread (and far too many flies), and a “local” curry for dinner that a chilli had barely been waved at. And I’ve never enjoyed poppadums with ketchup before.

My room (208, I believe) was in dire need of attention; peeling paint and sealant in the bathroom and stained towels.

Very patchy Wi-Fi throughout and a charge for it being in-room of $10 a day was simply astonishing.

Having had the opportunity to stay elsewhere in Bagan, I would advise others to do the same as this hotel (whilst attractive in layout and surrounded by beautiful stupas) simply did not measure up.

I loved staying in Bagan and the Kumudara is a good place to be based. Its got a nice little pool with a view across the fields to the temples, the rooms are clean and large and the restaurant is reasonable too. Price wise it is good value for money.

Hire a bike and ride around Bagan while you are there.
