I just returned from three days in the Bagan region and I can't say enough about the experience. There is no point in going to Burma if you don't come here.

Any one of the 4000+ temples would be a top tourist destination in my home country of canada. It was removed from the UNESCO world heritage site list in the 1980's after they weren't happy with the restoration work the military junta conducted after the devastating 1975 earthquake.

Though absolutely awe inspiring, it was also a bit depressing to see the garbage everywhere and general lack of care the area receives.

The balloon ride is 100% worth it!!

We visted Bagab in January 2014, mainly to see the numerous, famous pagodas and temples.
To get around we've opted for the more comfortable way by renting a taxi with driver. The horse carts seem to me too slow and uncomfortable, since the whole pagoda fields are very dusty.
Since there are too many temples to be visited we had to come up with a top-list: We' ve stopped at the Shwesagone, Htilominlo, the Sulamani, Ananda, Shwesandaw, Dhammayangyi and the Lawkanandy (New Bagan), all worth a visit. To watch the sunset, we went to the Dhammayangyi pagoda instead of the more popular Shwensandaw...not so crowded. Overall a very memorable experience!

There is. A lot more variety of temples than you might expect. I toured them by horse cart and it was difficult to get the driver to visit the less visited ones away from the road. When he did they had more atmosphere. He did take us to climb a less popular one for sunset, though there were still plenty of others there. A great experience.

I stayed in Bagan for 2 days. It's so amazed to see thousand of pagodas. You can ride a bike to pagoda as well as you want. Great place to see sunset and sunrise. I will be there again.
