Thank goodness for our tour guide (Mr. Aung Moe). We only had two days in the area, and he included all the main temples/pagodas in our itinerary. They were breath taking-better than I had imagined. The sunset view was so serene. If the hot air balloons had not been so expensive, I would have really loved to have see them from the sky.

“Overwhelming number of temples - plan your tour!”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

The temples here are comparable to Bali and Cambodia but It's just too many! 3 days or even a week is not enough to visit all the temples in Bagan. You need to pick the major ones and be strategic with your routes. I'd suggest to rent a horse cart for half a day to get the feel of the place and just go around by bike for the rest of your stay.
One of the best things I like here is you don't need to pay anything to enter the temples unlike in Cambodia wherein you need to buy an unli day (or 2) pass. You can leverage your horse card driver to be your guide for some stories and history - just make sure to get a good English speaker one.
Just a tip for a good sunset view, find Temple 394 - this is one of the 'hidden', smaller temples without the big crowd.

“The thousands of pagodas lost in the country side”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

It was amazing to find pagodas - either temples or stupas - scattered across the country side. We spent 3 days in Bagan which left us with a feeling of irreallity and beauty.

“Great religious fervour, but may be not great engineering skill”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

The view of the Bagan plains with so many brick stupas was amazing and definitely one of the interesting sights in Asia. The religious fervour that went into building so many stupas by many people besides the kings is something definitely admirable.

However, I felt that these stupas did not require great engineering skills and were relatively easy to build except the very big ones. I was impressed with the big temples like Ananda Patho with tall standing Buddha statues carved out of teak wood and painted with gold.
