An amazing place to visit. Nothing else like in in the world. Originally there were more than 4000 temples, stupas and pagodas built up until 1287. While restoration projects have compromised the archaeological history of Bagan the site remains a wonder.

Is guarantee u will like it so much. Been there and really enjoy it with the cycling all over the bagan. With all the photo shoot is very beautiful. The bike rental fee is 1500 kyat for whole day. And the sunset view is pretty scenery. One word to describe. Waoh...

This is simply a magical setting with temples everywhere you turn, in different styles from different eras. At sunset the gods come out and the air glitters.

Best advice- dont follow the tourist track to the large temples Do it if yo umust, but take the time to walk into the countryside and discover your own temples- no other tourists with you, jus the odd local. Treck across the paddocks in the late afternoon light and you will be amazed with what you find - and it isn't so hot.

There are certain monuments whose sheer scale illustrates a level of religious devotion so alien to modern westerners that they cannot but give us serious pause: societies in those times were just so different and the importance they accorded these icons incomprehensible to us.

Bagan is one of those. Everywhere you look, there are temples. Tiny ones, huge ones, ruined ones, rebuilt ones, modest ones, ornate ones. We had 3 days here, led around by our scholarly guide (who had, until sanctions pulled the plug on the money, been working for Unesco restoring the temples himself) and yet we still saw only a fraction, hopefully the most notable couple of dozen or so.

I wouldn't attempt to tell you which ones you should see: my favourites were the smaller (very red) sunset temple where at dawn we watched the balloons fly over, the one in old Bagan with the reclining Buddha filling up the temple because an the old king who had it built had been (politely) imprisoned and wanted to send a message, and the one beloved of Lord Mountbatten because he said its gothic-like interior reminded him of Early English (it did me too), and a couple with magnificent restored wall paintings where our guide showed us his personal work.

Whichever you see, you won't be disappointed: do take a good guide, do listen and do brave the heat. I will remember this place with awe many years hence and there's nowhere else in Asia that beats it, Angkor Wat included.

Only slight downside, there are a lot of hawkers: don't buy and don't encourage them: apparently kids can make so much from this that they prefer to skip school to do it, there's no sense in that.
