Ijen Resort & Villas

There must be a better option if visiting the Ijen crater!! 4 x 4 essential. Hotel should arrange pick up at start of 3km track to hotel. Even our jeep to Ijen crater took 15+ minutes. Nervous wreck the evening before (dark) in saloon car. Meal options dreadfully "poor western" and even no Indonesia food options at breakfast. Most peculiar bedroom layout! Internal window view to shower and toilet!! Staff very "so-so".
But if you can put up with the "poor" features the classic Indonesian views/location and great swimming pool at least partly mitigate the rest.

Room Tip: Perhaps they do have rooms without internal window views of the shower and toilet. Some crazy interi...

Stayed here on August 22 & 23, 2013 with a very small photographic tour group. We were not given a top tier room so make sure you ask for one in your reservation. Our room looked OK when we entered it but we discovered many insect carcases and a web with a live spider behind the reading light; as well as an inoperable desk lamp which they never fixed (although we asked them to). The shower and toilet are in an OUTSIDE bathroom and, while picturesque, this can be daunting in an Indonesian rainforest with all its critters. The shower/toilet area also needed a good cleaning. The staff in the restaurant lacked "hospitality" skills; the food was not very good. When I sent back my supposedly-hot entree, which was cold, the waiter was very rude. BUT, it is decidedly a very panoramic setting, although the road is horrible and one dreads going over it more than once. The MANAGEMENT needs to put some money into infrastructure maintenance and staff training. What a shame, since the place has such potential as a hospitality destination.

Room Tip: When you make the reservation tell them you want one of the better, top rooms.

The hotel is okay, the room was clean, the access road (3km) is really bad, the menu limited, no wifi, the staff friendly but slow. However, the location of the hotel is spectacular and you can sit in the restaurant, along the pool or on the terrace of the more luxury rooms and enjoy the view for ever! There are no better views in Bali!

The photos in the website look impressive, and you expect to be in a very special place. However, the hotel is disastrous. The rooms are very dirty, and specially the toilet.
The first room that they gave us was really dirty, the toilet had poo and hairs from the previous guest. After asking for a new room, we had to wait almost an hour to move a second room. The second room was more dirty, the toilet and the walls of the room were dirty.
We asked again for a clean room, and we move to another room, it was also dirty, but unless we do not have poo from the previous guests.

After asking for an explanation about the cleanliness of the room, the staff at the lobby said to me that it was not his responsibility, and there were no problem with it. Personally, I think it is incredible that after paying almost 200 $ for a room you receive such poor service.

I highly recommend that you choose an alternative hotel in the area, it is a waste of money

As previous reviewers have said, the 3km road to the hotel from the main road is HORRIBLE. Even a 4WD didn't improve the journey. But 20-30 minutes of that each way was worth it for the breathtaking views from our room, from the restuarant, and generally around the gardens. The gardens are meticulously kept, and the surrounding tiered rice paddies look amazing at dusk and dawn.
Very convenient for visiting Mount Ijen of course, and they start breakfast from 5 or 5.30am to allow you to set off early.

Our room was very well maintained and clean. Not brilliant, but very good. We didn't have a mosquito net however, which I think should have been included. No a/c but there was a fan which did the job.

I had one treatment in the spa, and although the treatment (body scrub) itself was good, I went in the early evening when the mosquitos were coming out and that spoilt my experience a little. It would be good if they could put up nets around the rooms to stop this happening as the buzzing and biting is not so relaxing.

Free wifi in the restaurant.

Is there something wrong with us that our family of four ,which includes two teenagers, have found this resort to be the best experience we have had so far on our trip to Bali and Java. It is remote and incredibly beautiful. The road is rough but just accept it, we are not in the West. We are here to experience the REAL Java - even the villagers on the way here have to use the same road. The rooms are delightful and the outdoor bathroom a real treat. The calls to prayer wafting
across the valleys are moving and beautiful and a reminder yet again that we are here to experience Java. The restaurant was superb and not that expensive (and our exchange rate from South Africa is not great) and the staff were efficient and so friendly. The gardens and pool were beautiful. We went to Kawah Ijen very early the one morning and breakfast was served for us from 4.30am by very accommodating staff. Ijen crater and the sulphur mining was an experience not to be missed and on top of it we went through a gorgeous rain forest on the way. Our two night visit to this hotel was a truly authentic Indonesian experience. Oh yes- almost forgot - the massages were the best we have ever had!!!

We couldn't agree more with previous reviewers - while the landscape and views are breathtaking, this doesn't compensate for a lack of basic upkeep. Very isolated in the middle of rice fields, the grounds (and the views) make for fascinating walks. The rooms (set in individual villas) were very large, with big outdoor bathrooms. Attention to small details (honeymoon cake) was also nice. However, the hotel does not make the extra effort. The bathroom was infested with ants (difficult to use even the toilet); no sleeping net over the bed limited the comfort of sleeping (particularly with very loud insects creeping in the thatched roof); the restaurant takes unfair advantage of the hotel's isolation and charges exorbitant prices for rather low quality food. Luckily, if you are relaxed and in a good mood, the views and hike up to Ijen partially make up for this :)
