“Stunning views and gardens”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

We stayed at Ijen Resort & Villas as a part of our honeymoon, the location couldn't be better, beautiful views and perfectly groomed gardens that really invite you to just inhale all the nature that surrounds you. That being said the rooms could use a hand of fresh paint and there are some other details that could been taken care of. The prices are very steep compared to other places in Indonesia, I understand that the resort is in a remote location, but massages where 10 times more expensive than anywhere else in the country. It pissed me off that being charged so much a very small part of all that money is going to end in the hands of the ones who deserve it the most.

The food is a poor attempt in trying to accommodate western tastes and some very poorly made local dishes as well. I've heard that it was a new chef brought from a city i Java, I would recommend to look around the village to find another new chef, we had a wonderful meal at a small warung near by.

Our driver, provided by the hotel, was exceptional he went out of his way to show us around and make the trip worth while.

Hard to say more than the title. If you're visiting the crater then this a great place to stay. It's off the beaten track (very long bumpy road to reach it - so don't expect to go into town in the evening), but for us it was perfect for a few nights.

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel/resort. The location is absolutely beautiful and peaceful (besides the mosque waking you up early in the morning) but otherwise we had a disappointing stay.
It rained the whole time, so we could not visit Ijen crater. The pool was cold. The food was not very good. The breakfast poor. Also the coffee was no good. Too bad because there are all coffee plantations nearby that produce great coffee! The rooms were ok, but damp. The shower and toilet are outside, which I like but the kids didn't enjoy the wet toilet and showering in the rain!
I had a foot massage which was no good, my legs still hurt after several days! Better to save your massage for somewhere else.
So the only reason to go here is if you really want to visit Ijen crater, but if it is rainy and misty then there is nothing to see.
One plus point is the small restaurant run by a local family a 5 minute walk from the hotel where we had a very authentic and good lunch.

Hotel incredibly well situated in the middle of rice fields with amazing views, the best I have seen.We were accommodated in a junior suite with a terrace and semi open bathroom. Unfortunately, no competition in the same area an then you will feel an average service for everything else.
- rooms are not cleaned well
- very bad smell even though they try to arrange upon our request (but staff loved about it, not professional at all)
- food is expensive for the place and very average, breakfast is not offering what you would expect from such place. Quality is not met at all.
- spa treatment ok, we experienced a good feet massage
- very nice swimming pool to relax but often cloudy and humid with less sun

Overall a mitigate experience.I can only recommend it for those who want to climb the inen Vulcan because no alternative in the surroundings.

Room Tip: Take a junior suite

The views of the ricefields are unbeatable. The rooms (we stayed in a bungalw) are very nice (although noisy) and so is the poolarea. But everything is realy very expensive and the food is bad (but you cannot go elswhere since the road is so awefull it takes over 20 minutes to reach the hotel (3 km) when you have left the main road). We loved the sound of all the animals but were less amused when a 2 feet lizard walked in the room. Even in this remote hills, you can hear the call for prayers. As elsewhere in Java you cannot escape the increasing muslim influence.

Hotel in incredible location. At the end of a trail that rivals the roller coaster experience in many theme parks. The hotel itself is fine. When we were there it was cloudy and rained one day; this made the place feel damp, even the bedding. It is a total chill-out place with beautiful views of spectacular rice fields and hills.(without being induced by locals feeding them). Overall a great place for adults who wish to chill out and have early nights; for teenagers or others the lack of tv and wifi may make it too quiet.

We had the resort handle our reservation and transfers. The process was smooth and without hiccups unlike at our last stop at Java Banana. We figured that everything was going to be overpriced for Indonesia and it was exactly that. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The views and surrounding walks were fantastic. We stayed for two nights. Unfortunately, there are some value problems with this place. The room is very ordinary for the price as is the service and cleanliness. The included buffet dinner was very bland and uninspired. Many have mentioned the awful road leading up to the resort. I found this to be very exaggerated or maybe I have just seen too many worst roads in my travels. Actually, you get to see wonderful scenes of everyday life on the way up that road and going slowly due to the conditions made it better. We stayed during Ramadan and the constant chanting coming from the mosques in the villages made it hard to fall asleep. This was the second place in Indonesia that asked us for payment upon arrival- very cheesy and cheapens the welcome. Too bad, this place is incredibly scenic and may one day be worth the price if management fine tunes the experience a little more. On another note, hiking up to the Ijen crater is an absolute must. It is such a humbling experience too watch the sulfur workers work so hard for so little money. Try to get up to the crater by 8:30 am before the incredible panorama gets covered.
