Ijen Resort & Villas
Reviewed August 16, 2011

We stayed at 'Ijen Resort & Villas' for 2 nights, as part of our 3 week roundtrip on Java and Bali. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed with a refreshing fruit drink. The resort is located in a remote and unspoiled rural area of East Java, surrounded by terraced rice fields and rainforest. The scenery is magnificent and breathtaking.
We stayed in a deluxe room in a bungalow (nr. 108) with terrace facing the rice fields. The room was clean, spacious, had very comfortable beds, an indoor bathroom with wash-stand and an outdoor shower and toilet.
The open air restaurant serves good food at lunch as well as at diner (we only ate a la carte so we don't know the taste of the buffet). The breakfast is a bit average.

Overall experience: fantastic location, panoramic vistas, fresh mountain air, total tranquility, relaxed atmosphere, comfortable room, beautiful garden, beautiful pool, good service and a friendly staff.

The only downside could be the fact that the road which is leading to the resort is a 3,5 kilometers long, very rocky and bumpy track. But hé, who cares, this is part of the rural beauty.

It takes about one and a half hour drive from the resort to the starting point for the 3 kilometers hike to the Ijen Crater. Climbing this crater is absolutely well worth the trip.
Tip: book a footmassage in the resort for after you have climbed the crater.

The location is great, but the road condition (3,5 km) to reach the hotel is a really nightmare.
The service was polite and efficient. The restaurant for dinner but especially for breakfast was below the expectative. The rooms needs to be "refreshed"

It is a bit of a mish to get to- the last 3.5km up a pot holed "road" jigs you about. We stayed 1 night but could have stayed for one more at least. We cancelled the crater tour since we were all exhausted form the sunrise tour the morning before at Mt Bromo. We had a bungalow set in front of rice fields and mountains- really amazing. You can walk amongst the fields and really see local javanese living their local lives. We all really loved the place.

The hotel is expensive - the food was OK - friendly staff. Internet in the room very poor but the place is quite isolated! The rooms were comfortable- outdoor shower was nice. Didn't dip in the pool as it was too cool-but the gardens are beautiful and it was a great place to unwind. We would recommend the place if you were in the area.

If you go here knowing that you will get incredibly ripped off then you may not be as disappointed when you leave. We spent over $700 for two nights here which includes a dinner a lunch, a tour and our onward transportation to Bromo. Even now when I do the maths I don't see how it ended up that much! Coincidently they did not receive my reservation through expedia on checkin and had mysteriously added an extra tour to my bill on checkout.
This being said the setting is amazing, great view of the volcanoes and rice paddies and lovely little resort. Was worth staying 2 days but was certainly not worth the money spent. You can see ijen crater from any base around the area and in hindsight I would have happily stayed at one of the resorts in Banguwangi instead.

We genuinely regret having only stayed for 1 night at Ijen resort and crater. I can't begin to tell how truly stunningly beautiful the rice fields and the whole setting was. Watching the sun rise was absolutely bliss and even writing this review transports me to that wonderful place. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel staff even made us a flower bath as we were celebrating our anniversary. I have to wholeheartedly apologise to the poor guy who checked us in - the lack of sleep brings out the little devil in me (we had to wake up for Mt Bromo sunrise that day), we had some payment issues at checkin but other that incident. the staff made an effort and were very friendly and we thank them for welcoming us. Overall, if you are considering staying here..do so! Thg, I itierate the point made by previous reviewers thg, the road to the hotel is very bad so consider getting a jeep to the hotel??

This place has such beautiful grounds. We stayed in one of the delux cottages that looked out over the rice paddies. Really enjoyed sitting on our little balcony and looking for birds. Found lots too. Room was nice and bed comfortable. The road there is quite rocky. It amused us that this place is called a resort and conference center - as it seemed like such an out of the way, difficult to reach (because of bumpy road) location. Couldn't imagine who'd have a conference there. Lovely pool. Lovely outside restaurant. Food very average though and not such great coffee. About half full when we were there, but volcanoes around had been active month before, so think tourism was down. Though the volcano crater was totally socked in when we were there, we still enjoyed the hike up to the edge, seeing the sulphur miners, etc. And much to our delight, the ride/hike the hotel arranged for us was great because we had a great guide - Albert. Thought we'd just have a driver. Albert's English was pretty good, he was very enthusiastic and he pointed out lots of things of interest to us, even some birds, when he realized we were interested (even though he said he didn't know them very well).

Ijen Resort is an ambitious project with high room rates for Indonesian standard with following pros and cons:

+ great location with stunning views
+ quite nice rooms with very good beds

we experienced following in a negative way:
- terrible road condition 3.5 km to the hotel
- no hot water in the outdoor shower (at low outside temperature)
- lengthy check-out process when asking for a discount of the steep room price of 140 USD (high for Indonesian standard) for the missing hot water, the staff did not trust our feedback and had to check the condition first; according to other reviews cold shower was not a one-timer
- dirty breakfast tables; staff did not clean the tables for hours
- we had to change our room due to late booking to find out we ended up in the same room after packing our luggage and returning from a day trip and waiting in the lobby that was over-crowded with luggage and guests of a tour group
- when we went to the room cleaning staff had left already but without their cleaning devices, extra towels and coffee sachets
- restaurant : food offered was below average and for the room price I would expect more variety for breakfast than eggs, marmalade and cheese in plastic wraps
- afternoon nap was impossible due to staff shouting outside the rooms
