“A long journey but definitely worth it”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

We headed to Sukamade from Mt ijen - it was a long journey up and down rutted tracks that didn't seem to have seen many cars and we had to ford a few rivers (a 4x 4 is vital). We were staying at Mess Pantai and when we got to the final crossing the river was too high to ford so left the car and went across by raft - and our guide cadged a lift for us from a car that was already at the lodge so we didn't have to walk the final 2 km!

Accomodation is basic but the food is OK and there is a real sense of being somewhere very remote. That night there were quite a few turtles laying eggs on the beach and the rangers took us to one that we spent an hour with before going back to the hatchery and seeing the baby turtles that had hatched a few weeks earlier. One real highpoint was being given 5 baby turtles to release into the sea ourselves the next morning...our girls aged 5, 8 and 11 regarded it as one of the high points of their holiday in Indonesia..as did the adults!

A couple of tips - it can be wet and you walk through a forest along a track to get to the beach so ensure you have suitable footware and waterproofs, the beds didn't have sheets so we slept in our clothes and used our own towels as coverings, there were no washbasins and non flushing toilets so be prepared to rough it a bit - but you can do it in a night and a morning...and you'll have been somewhere very few people have reached...

“A dream came true!!!”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

From Kaliburu we made a two day trip to Sukemade beach hoping to see a seaturtle laying her eggs at night. This was always a dream of mine.

Before you reach the beach you travel through Meru Betiri National Park. It is a nice but very bumpy trip. You need a 4-wheel drive vehicle, as there are no bridges for crossing the rivers (really fun driving through the water, the kids liked it very much!!). On the road we came along rubber plantations, cacao plantations, coffee plantations and we have seen how sugar is made. Our guide explained a lot about all of this. It was very interesting, also for our kids.

During a short jungle walk we have seen various hornbills and monkeys.

In the evening we went to Sukemade beach. Before we walked on a 800 meters long path to the beach, we visited the turtle hatchery and we saw how turtle eggs are protected and how little turtles are growing before they are released into the ocean.

Then we went to the beach with the rangers. We were lucky: not much later the rangers let us know that a turtle was on the beach!!! It was very impressive to see her laying her eggs and making a fake path and finally see her walking to the sea.

Next day in the morning we released like 25 little turtles in the sea. We were all alone (without the rangers) to do this job. Very, very impressive.

It was a long trip but really worth it!
