Staff were ok and helpful at first, but a bit lazy and used to tourists.
The thought of staying more than one night at this "homestay" come rundown motel, wasn't appealing!
The hot water didnt work in the room, but they were helpful and gave me plenty of sealed soap bars, new toilet paper rolls, and clean towels. There was also plenty of free fresh coffee to drink from the plantation near reception. Beds were clean and comfortable but bathroom was pretty poor and old, although you do get a western toilet! the weather up here is also pretty fresh cloudy and with plenty of afternoon showers, so I didnt fancy long here out of choice.
I just turned up on a public bus from Bondowoso and negotiated prices on arrival. Price was ok given theres only catimor as a nearby alternative! dont be pursuaded by a swimming pool at Catimor as Sempol village is in the mountains - night time is very cold and day time is very cool aswell so swimming pool is the last thing you want. I only stayed a night as I managed to join a tour group for about 180,000 IDR to take me at 4am the next morning to see the blue flames and sunrise etc at kawah Ijen, then they took me to Banyuwangi by aircon minibus and then got the ferry to Bali and a public bus to Lovina all in including guide and "admission fees" all this took most of the day so pretty good value. Beware plenty of scams as usual where travel agents and tour buses are involved going to Bali from Java.
You are asked to pay for admission for Kawah Ijen, but never get a ticket... the tour buses normally dump you at Banyuwangi ferry area and make you buy onward bus tickets. You are then often dumped on a cheap non aircon public bus regardless of destination in Bali. If you are not going to stay on the same bus and go along the Denpasar route then you get off the bus as soon as the ferry docks in Bali. make sure the bus you were on, also pays the onward bus - as all too often the money disappears inbetween and some people have to pay again... just be aware of scams all along in this area if travelling on a tour.
I dodged most of this, but saw it happening.
advice-
1 in Indonesia always say you havent got a camera when visiting national parks, as this bit is rarely checked, and for foreigners it costs 50000 IDR per camera. Normal admission per person is normally about 30000 IDR for foreigners so I never have a camera!
2 if you are suspicious about paying for onward transportation just wait with everyone else and dont buy a ticket - as you will end up on a public bus and just get the correct bus to Bali IE Lovina route or Denpasar route, all will pass at the stop. This way you can wait for a bus with a seat aswell and get off where you want without any stress or ticket problems!
public bus to Lovina should cost 30000IDR and Denpasar should be about 40000 IDR pp.
3 If you travel to Sempol independently, the transport from Bondowoso is slow as they overload the minibuses before they go up into the mountains with everything but the kitchen sink! you then find to get to Kawah Ijen even Ojeks are expensive unless you go during the day then you dont see the blue flames! Kawah Ijen is cut off and the villagers know it.
4 at kawah Ijen (which is great and worth the effort) ignore warning signs saying you are forbidden from going down the trail to the flames, day or night, not even our "guide" did it, but local tourists did and so did I...
Remember this is Indonesia

It's value for money. It's kind like a house with few rooms depend on the tourists quantity. The room is spacious. There is living room too. The room is a bit smelly but in acceptable range. There is hot shower but you will have to adjust regularly. There are a lot of plantation including coffee, strawberries and other more. You can approach to natural easily and imagine you had your breakfast in front of greenish mountain. It's probably a good place for relaxing and family gathering. They provide wifi access but I found it's difficult to connect. Well, away yourself from the electronic stuffs and simply enjoy the picturesque scenery.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are smelly, try to avoid the smelly room.

This place is in picturesque government-owned coffee plantation. The economy rooms are small but reasonable for the price. The views of the inside of the ancient crater are lovely. Security can organise a pre dawn motorbike lift up to the kawah ijen hike point.

Arabica was a part of our package to Ijen, since there are no other places around this crater we weren't left with much choice. They first showed us a terrible room which was musty and smelled mildly of garbage, when i requested for a change of room they first said all other rooms were occupied, but then later gave us a bigger room. The second room had a good share of insects, the boiler in the bathroom will surely give you a scare, and after you brush in the sink you realise it runs down to your feet. Thankfully we spent only a few hours here before embarking upon a midnight trek to Ijen crater. It is liveable for a few hours.

Room Tip: 'A' category rooms are supposed to be the best, for a few dollars more I think its better.

stayed at this place the night before visiting Ijen, as part of a package deal.

when you arrive the complex looks quite charming.
but when entering the room it doesn't look so charming.
no windows, small, not to clean and uncomfortable beds.
the boiler looks like 50 years old....and it probably is.
when flushing to toilet, the whole bathroom fluds..

the food isnt special either.....walking into the small village down the hill and look for some diner is well worth it.
for breakfast you get a box with 2 slices of bread, a overboiled egg and some jam.

if they just put some effort in and just refurbish the place a bit, the place could be so nice...pity
