Excellent, has history of Indonesia, many good exhibits and English translations. For Indonesia very good and well worth a morning. Good coverage of Dayak history including local customs and artifacts.

My wife and I lived in Pontianak for 17 years and have visited this "Equator city again many times" There are more Chinese in Pontianak than in any other part of Indonesia. That is one reason why the city is so prosperous. Being on the mouth of the 5th longest river in the world (so we read), drainage for the amazing, mysterious and fascinating island of Borneo, It is a key trade center for all the towns and communities for 700 km interior where raw materials arrive to be sent on to other key Asian cities. It is an ancient city with so very much of the old way of doing things. The huge old cargo/house boats that go way up interior and the large, gorgeous wooden Bugis boats that sail all over Indonesia. It's an amazing port city. It has quite a seedy side and outlaws abount so you really need to keep an eye on your valuables! Leave your jewelry at home! This city will give you an idea of what old Singapore was like in many respects. (I know, I've been to Singapore in the early 70's) It's not particularly clean although luxury hotels you'll now find. There are lovely, much cheaper places that are unlisted and you just have to hunt for them. Our favorite for location and budget is: "The Hotel Sentral" Perfect spot. get used to cigarette smoke in Pontianak...very hard to avoid. The coffee shops in Pontianak (The Suka Hati on Jalan Dipogegoro) is simple, traditional and the coffee is roasted and ground on the premises. I still dream of the place. the coffee is quite strong but smooth and delicious with a powerful jolt! By the time I finish my second one there...I can't stop talking to the locals. Being fluent in the language or being with a friend who is....is EVERYTHING!!

There are countless local dishes. The Beringin (There are a few outlets) is wonderful for the traditional Padang food of sumatra, famous all over Indonesia. some of the dishes are a bit hot but not all. Simply a culinary excursion!

If you are hesitant...take me with you!
