“Good hotel for business and transiting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2012

Been staying in this hotel for most of numerous visits to Balikpapan before 2012, mostly between Jakarta and the offshore rigs around. The hotel was definitely has seen better days, formerly under Dusit management.

PROS
- Has private beach with access adjacent to hotel.
- Gym equipments was average. Instructor is there and could give you advices which is a good point.
- Staff is genuinely care and friendly
- WIFI connections is fast and free (get the password from receptionist)
- Breakfast here is good, with variety of Indonesian (love the Nasi Uduk!) and continental to choose from.
- Meeting rooms is somewhat OK.
- Bed and pillow is averagely OK.
- Bathroom is nice, with enough amenities. Shower is hot.
- Transfer to/from airport by hotel with Toyota Innova only IDR 60k which is pretty cheap and good value compared to local taxi (Mawar/Borneo) mostly using small sedan with IDR 50k.

CONS
- Rooms looked dated and seen better days
- Some has smoke smell even though I've asked for non-smoking room
- Standard/Superior rooms is pretty small. Ask for executive/suite/club rooms on top floor. Ask for room with sea view.
- Club lounges is pretty standard and small. Enough for having morning tea and snacks.
- Food price in beach restaurant seems exorbitant by local standard.
- No hotel loyalty program exist as far as I know.

Overall, I would stay in this hotel if only for 1-3 days and will prefer another better hotel in town for longer stays.

Room Tip: Stay away from superior/standard room. They're pretty small. Try club/executive rooms as they ha...

My Last visit was in October but I stay here for a week every quarter.
I allways stay on executive floor where the staff are fantastic.
Extremely friendly and efficient.
The hotel has an excellent gym which has instructors at all times and one instructor who will
give you a hit of tennis.Take your own raquet though.
The pool area is excellent and for long periods of the day if you have time you can have it
to yourself.
Rooms are basic but quite adequate and they provide free internet.
Taxi service and in house vehicle rental is best I have experienced.

Room Tip: Recomend the Executive floor. Rooms with ocean view are best or south facing.

For most of my business trips, I stay at Balikpapan. I'll share my experience with this hotel. My last trip was on 17th Sept.

First, the hotel is about 10 - 15 min from the airport, which is very near. You can get a taxi once you leave the arrival hall of the airport. Depending whether you speak Indonesian, the fare to the hotel can cost anything from Rp40,000 to Rp120,000. The average price you pay without much haggling is Rp50,000 (about USD5).

Le Grandeur is not the newest hotel. Actually, it was originally the Dusit hotel. Checking in is normally quick. But the reception only have about 2 - 3 staff, so if you arrive coinciding with a flight from Jakarta, the wait is about 10 - 15mins before you are served.

Rooms are basic, clean, but need to make sure it is non smoking. My advise is to upgrade to executive rooms, which is on the top floor. The rooms are much more spacious and definitely good. I stayed in room 502, facing the sea, which gives me great view. Moreover, you have your own lounge to check out, and have daily free drinks, breakfast separate from the crowds.

Staff are friendly, and some of the older ones can speak relatively good English. Executive rooms comes with free wifi, a lounge for a quiet morning breakfast + newspaper, 5-7pm tea time (a good gin and tonic).

As for the night life, don't expect much. Matahari lounge in lobby is basically 2 set of sofa and a bar. Normally empty. The Borneo club is quiet, with a pool table, and old hags hanging around. But you can't blame the hotel for that!

Generally good business hotel, and always opt for the executive rooms/suites. The lower floors are slightly below par. It is nevertheless will be my first choice (due to the peace and quiet atmosphere). Most oil companies (e.g. TOTAL, Chevron) uses it for their conference, meetings, convention, so it must maintain a minimum standard.

Room Tip: Opt for the executive or suites on the top floor, as the quality is much better. Ask for a sea view...

This is a pretty basic hotel, especially if you've just come from The Mulia in Jakarta, which I had. The staff were friendly and efficient, the bar was OK and you could sit outside on a balcony if you wished. There is an external swimming pool; well more of a playing pool. The sea is immediately adjacent. The rooms were fairly basic but had the necessary essentials, soaps, shampoos, towels etc and the water was hot. It is definitely dated and more targeted on the working personnel who frequent if for the local refinery etc. It has a 24 hr massage service, with extras if you so wished. I wouldn't want to stay in it as a holiday hotel but it was OK if you're passing through on work, or just for a night or two. Air conditioning was only marginally acceptable, as were the pillows.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the sea. Best to ask for one of those.

My husband and I have just spent 3 nights at the Le Grandeur Balikpapan. We stayed in 2 different rooms with an amazing view of Beach, Makasar Strait and another in the back is Garden view that was just as nice and very quiet. Service was amazing. When I put in a room service order and was told the food would arrive in about one-half hour, the food arrived exactly on time. All the help was attentive, helpful and gracious. No request was too small. Hours after we checked out, my husband realized he had left his I-pad in our room. He called the hotel, told them the problem and when we returned several days later, My husband's I-Pad was waiting for him. Most of all I'd like to mention the help we got from the Concierge Desk. What a great hotel.

This is an old hotel that hasn't been cleaned or renovated in at least 15 years, probably more. The rooms are filthy and the meeting rooms are worse. The problem is mostly that the air ducts are full of black mold. If you're allergic to black mold, you'll end up very ill from staying here. 2 of us ended up in hospital after a 3 day stay, and several others had cough and sinus problems for weeks afterward.

The club level has very limited amenities and the club lounge really has nothing except places to sit.

The gym equipment is all old and mostly broken.

The food is very average.

The hotel doesn't enforce non-smoking rooms so all rooms have been smoked in and cause sinus problems.

There are 3 or 4 better options in Balikpapan that I've used.

Avoid this place at all costs.

Room Tip: Start with a different hotel...

we stayed here just for 1 day in idul fitri.lucky for us that we gor room with beach view. the room was small dan the bed was 2 single bed combined as 1 king size bed (i never see this type of bed in othe hotels that i ever stayed)
i really dissapointed with the receptionist who never out smile on her fafe and talked so crude and even not said "thank you" after finished the check out dan check in procedure.
the breakfast food also just average for a 4 stars hotel. especially in egg station was so messed uo and dirty.
next time i maybe just come for dinner at the beach restaurant or swim and absolutely will never stay here again.

Room Tip: asked for the beach view room which is favorite room's view of this hotel
