First of all I'm quite surprised of the clean streets in Balikpapan.

The Hotel is expensive by local standards for meals and drinks.
The room are big but old fashioned, with some damage on the furniture, nothing really to worry about for a short stay. Room and Bath, Toilet where clean and I had plenty of HOT water.

It did not only have the slowest wifi I have ever experienced, I could not even connect in my room so used only my BB for emails.

I has a good bell staff and counter people.
The restaurants seams to be all pretty good, it has a nice little bar downstairs with a good Restaurant (Sky....)on top with good seafood and western food (Steak)

Breakfast was ok.

The hotel is in the heart of Balikpapan, 20 minutes drive from the airport, just follow the main road. Novotel, Ibis and 3 other 3-star hotels just around the corner. The hotel has 8 floors with sky restaurant in the 7th floor. The room is old but very spacious, and the bed is comfortable enough for sleeping. They have simple gym, just like 2-3 star hotel standard and a small swimming pool. The breakfast is very simple for a 5 star hotel, very basic. The structuring of the tables is not good, smoking is allowed and the waitress are not very helpful and never smile. Don't expect much from them. In front of the hotel there is 24 hours mini-market. In walking distance there are mall and local restaurants. If you want crabs, you have to take a taxi. I found Sunda Kelapo, Bondy and Dendito are nice restaurants. For hang out till midnight, just go to the seaside restaurants like Ocean, Zeus, walking distance (10-15 minutes walk) from the hotel. For souvenirs, take a taxi to Pasar Kebun Sayur.

Room Tip: I have moved from room 335 to 603 because it is a smoking floor. The view of 335 is very good, where...

Stayed two nights during a business trip.
Room was lovely and the staff extremely friendly and courteous, although not very speedy.
It's very expensive by local standards for meals and drinks.
It has a pool, the slowest wifi I have ever experienced in the rooms (lobby ok), did not go to the beach but it is visible from the hotel's upper floors but the town doesn't appear to have a tourist industry and the beach was deserted..

Room Tip: Smile at the reception staff?

Surprisingly, this is one of the most comfortable hotels I've stayed in. Decent and clean rooms. Good location - walking distance to nearby eateries. Complimentary cookies in the room and hot shower and clean bathroom. Recommended place to stay indeed

Ok, so here's the deal with this place, it really wants to be upscale, and in many regards it is, it has really nice and large rooms with wood floors, it has a nice pool, it has a good bell staff and counter people. The restaurants are all pretty good, it has a nice little bar downstairs with a great live band that plays just about every night. It has a nice spa that does massages and facials etc. All the furnishings look pretty nice, the lobby is very large with lots of hand carved stuff and giant ceramic vases, some old motorcycles and cars here and there.
As you stay there a while you'll notice that there don't seem to be many people around, which is kind of eery, I'd be surprised if they are ever more than half full. You'll start to notice that the building is aging, cracks in ceilings etc, the furniture is a little fun down and needs some TLC.
It's pretty cheap to stay there, somewhere around $65 a night in what is a fair 4 star range hotel. The food and drinks are about what you'd expect to pay in the US for a decent meal, $15-25 a meal I'd estimate, with drinks for 4 or 5 bucks a pop, so they make back some of your money on food/drink. There are 3 or 4 places to eat on the property. You can order food out at the pool, in the lounge, in any of the restaurants or in your room.
Anyway, it's pretty much right in the middle of town and is decently upscale, I'd be happy to stay there if I was on vacation or something (though it isn't a vacationy town).
