I've been traveling around India for the last 5 months, and this is by far the worst hotel I have stayed in. We arrived at the hotel after already booking a room for one night and paying for it via makemytrip. The receptionist said we were being moved to a "sister hotel." I argued with him, but to no avail. He arranged for a rickshaw to pick us up and take us to this "sister hotel." While Hotel Sahil is perfectly located, right in the heart of town, this other hotel was on Ajmer's fringes and totally out of the way for us. Upon arriving at the other hotel, the receptionist there, who spoke no english, looked at us quizzically and immediately called Hotel Sahil, (without even speaking to us) and said in Hindi, "They're white." After he hung, up he reluctantly showed us to our room. About 10 minutes later, my friend received a phone call from makemytrip, asking us how our stay was so far and if there was anything they could do. Shocked, we said "Yes! Absolutely! Arrange for us to be sent back to Hotel Sahil and get the room we paid for!" Within 10 minutes we were on our way back to Hotel Sahil and were greeted somewhat begrudgingly by the receptionist. After looking at our passports and seeing that we were from the USA, he warmed up a bit. He showed us to our room, which at this point we felt we couldn't do anything about. The room was small, with dirty linens and towels. There were cockroaches and constant noise all through the night coming from the hall way. I had to keep saying to myself "only for one night, only for one night." Personally, I can deal with disrespectful staff and being forced to switch hotels, but I don't do well with dirty sheets or cockroaches! All you need is some bleach and an exterminator!
The next day the receptionist approached us after having had a closer look at our passports and visas. He was all smiles and friendliness when he realized that we were students studying at one of the best schools in India, that he wanted his son to go to. He asked us questions and was as welcoming as can be.
Take away message: The hotel gives preferences to white people and can be totally two-faced. It is dirty, loud and there are bugs. Stay away!
