- Purchase online tickets (www.gulmarggondola.com/gondola_tickets.php) for both phases ( especially during summer seasons) as snow might not be available in phase one
Online tickets are available in a separate shack at the back of the phase1 boarding place. Prefer taking a print out of the booking or show booking details on mobile for getting ticket
- Go straight to second phase and dont spend too much time at phase 1
- Phase-2 altitude takes a bit of time to get used to oxygen levels. So pace yourself accordingly.
- Tell your taxi driver to take you to new taxi stand only as it is max 0.6 km from the cable car ticket counter. By default taxis are guided to old taxi stand where pony wallahs will bugger you to rent ponies. They will also tell try to sway you with trip of 7-8 points but in my view stick to the cable car ride as it is the best thing in gulmarg
- Try to keep a weekday for visit to Gulmarg as weekends are more crowded and hence longer waiting times
- There is very minimal food ( chips + water) available at phase - 1 or 2. So pls carry stuff accordingly if you plan to spend longer time at the top
- Bargain freely for lowest rates possible with guides :) . In my view guides will easily settle for 25% of the rates quoted

- Very nice panaromic views of the mountains and valley
- 2nd phase had abundant snow, even in July, to play around and do skiing and sleigh rides

- Attitude of the people - When I refused to hire ponies , the pony-wallah told me to "Go back. We dont need tourists like you in Srinagar" Such hostile attitude from a 50+ man left a very bad taste in the mouth
- Careless authorities - Lots of agents sneak up people into the queues of cable car on commission basis. Kindly be aware of this tactic
- No decent food options - Typical options were maggi and omlette
- In case of bad weather, 2nd phase is closed. Also weather can get bad very quickly at the top

Though the Reception area of the Gondola is under repair and as a result there is little chaos, the journey is enjoyable. View at the first level is unforgettable. In April 14 there had been massive snow and the surroundings were really great.

From the point of parking the car to the point of Gondola start, its about 1- 2 Kms distance. Its an easy, scenic walk. Flowers and greenery surround the road. Dont let the horse owners fool you saying that its a very long distance etc. Do hire the snowboots and coat for protection from the rains/snow/mud.

At the ticket and boarding pass points, the queues are indeed hours long.Hire a guide - who will charge around 500 Rs. - this can get you easier , faster access. The ride is beautiful.

Usually people move straightaway to Aparwath - phase 2 of the Gondola from here but it was a rainy day when we went , so the 2nd phase was closed. (we got refund fort he prepaid online tickets.) We only had access to Kungdoor,From the Gondola landing, we had to take a long horseride (tiresome and costly) to get to a dirty glacier. The horseowners here bargain a lot. They quoted about 1000 rs. per person for the to and fro ride but came down to 600 Rs. per person eventually. They claimed they will show us 4-5 points but ended up simply pointing to and mentioning the names of "points" on the way to the glacier.

All in all - prefer winter months and avoid rainy months here.Otherwise you are likely to be disappointed.
