Excellent stay. It is located very close to gondola rides. They provide vehicle to go to gondola. Beautifully decorated, food we tried in the grill section. Steak was out of this world. Wish we had more days to enjoy the hotel. The view from the rooms was breath taking. If we ever come back to Gulmarg we would want to stay here.

Gulmarg tends to be touristy and crammed during summers but Khyber’s location ensures that you’re far and away from the madding crowds besides offering you with some of the best views of the layered mountains and the mist. This is one place that will overwhelm you with its sheer grand feel, as you seldom come across a luxurious resort of this size in the hill stations. Mostly, we expect a simple & functional lobby and basic room standards, but a few addresses like this have truly raised the bar.

Don’t miss the traditional Kashmiri Kahwa on arrival while their staff completes the check-in formalities. It’s very intimate and comfortable lounge at the far end of the extended lobby, with large bay windows separating sunlit verandahs overlooking the hills. The rooms have the typical comforts of five-star hotel and resorts in other parts of the country, just that you would not have expected it here. The décor is creatively inspired by local Kashmiri artistic motifs. However, despite being a new hotel, some structural elements had maintenance issues like the sliding door between the wardrobe and toilet.

We had a large spacious balcony sit out attached to our room, a perfect place to brood and admire the blissful views. With Kashmir having extended daylight in summers, you have the flexibility to optimize your hours between the balcony and bathtub as the view gets replicated from toilet as well.

We preferred taking all our meals at the resort itself. The breakfast and weekend dinner buffet spread was extensive and a-la-carte menu had some interesting local cuisine choices. Service was a need area at times, as the staff was not well-trained to be attentive or make eye contacts. They looked busy all the time without really attending to the guests. Service issue was also faced when we had to request thrice for something as simple as keeping an extra duvet in the room.

Otherwise, the team is very knowledgeable to interact with and seemed to have background experiences with some of the leading International hotel brands. The resort management also went out of their way to arrange Gondola tickets for us, a must-do experience if you are in Gulmarg. This saved us from the frustration of getting into long queues. We were advised to come back in winters, esp. February to experience another aspect of Gulmarg.

Khyber is a destination in itself and you’re tempted to be back here soon, hopefully, their spa would be operational soon.

Room Tip: 1) If you can afford it, go for a room with balcony. 2) Book you Gondola tickets in advance in peak...

Possibly the best hotel in Gulmarg, the Khyber is an excellent, brand new property. The hotel has the feel of a "wood cabin" with great views of the mountains & woods.

Pros:
1. Located very close to the Gondola starting point & the golf course.
2. Service is outstanding with eager to please staff.
3. Rooms are brand new and were the most comfortable in Kashmir.
4. Food though limited in choice, was generally decent.
5. Chaikash their tea lounge is a great hang out and serves lovely kawa. Also decent cappuccino.
6. The room we had, overlooked the hotel gardens which are perfect to relax in. Hotel also does bonfires on request for an additional charge.
7. Kids have a cinema, trampoline, billiards table (poorly maintained), garden area to play in, all of which keeps them busy.
8. We shared our suite with 2 kids, which worked out well. The room balcony was spectacular.

Cons:
1. The hotel has some construction still underway. Can be noisy if you are nearer the construction.
2. The approach to the hotel is cluttered with ponies which make a real mess. No real fault of the hotel, Gulmarg is just like that.
3. The hotel restaurant was shut which meant that you had a choice between the buffet & an open air continental restaurant. The buffet tries hard, but isn't very good. It also gets boring if you are going to eat three meals times 3 days in the same room! Gulmarg has no other real options outside the hotel.
4. The lack of authentic Kashmiri food was our greatest disappointment. When in Kashmir why would you want to eat continental? Perhaps for the europeans who come skiing in the winter!
5. NO ALCOHOL...... so BYOB!

Overall, I would highly recommend Khyber.

Room Tip: Balcony suites are what you want.

Newly built, superbly done up hotel. Hotel owner seems to have spent a fortune in building it (some parts still under construction). Spa is still to be operational.

Stayed in a room with balcony - comparable to the best.

Had the best Kahwa tea of my trip (which was offered while check-in was being done). However, food quality was generally not up to the mark, maybe its early days.

Stayed 4th & 5th June 2013

The check in was painfully slow, we were offered some kahwa and then totally forgotten about. The rooms are nice. However almost half of the rooms have balconies for which the hotel charges approx Rs 3000 extra. Rooms with No balconies have a big glazed wall for a good view of the forest beyond, but then the glass was never cleaned.
In this hotel we had to go down 2 floors to reach our room. Provision for lift is there which was not installed as yet.
The spa is also not functional yet. The business centre is also lacking in many aspects. No newspapers delivered to the rooms in the morning.
Quality of food is good and the service in the restaurant is good.
Housekeeping is poor. Hot water tap was delivering tepid water, while cold water tap was dry. After complaint mechanics did come over to fix up, though the job done was not perfect.
The location is very good.
This hotel has all the services under one roof, which is very important in winter when it is snowing outside.
My Nephew who was also with us on this trip and had stayed in Highland park hotel many times earlier had booked this hotel for a change. His was of the opinion that in Summer, Highland Park would be a better choice, while in winter this Khyber Resort would be OK.

Room Tip: Rooms with Balcony have better view, but are more expensive.
