“Just so-so.. Dated and very very cold”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

This was my husband and my least favourite of the 4 accommodations we stayed at during our 8 days of safari through Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Firstly, the whole lodge was very very very cold. We had to wear a fleece or jacket everywhere in the lodge including our hotel room, and so were all the other guests and staff. Secondly, the decor was outdated and needs to be modernised. Lastly, food was so-so.. very "commercial" with soggy vegetables, cold desserts (bread pudding etc were cold too). Staff were not friendly as well. It's main redeeming factor was the amazing view we had of the crater.

I guess if we have not had the opportunity to stay in other tented camps and lodges earlier in our trip, we might have found this place acceptable. But having experienced other accommodation that were far smaller but so much more personalised with better service standards, this place was a real disappointment.

The location is fantastic and worth it for the experience at least once. The rooms have magnificent views over the crater, as do the public areas. There is a long balcony along the bar/restaurant outside where you can sit and enjoy the views and watch animals through the set of binoculars. The rooms were fine. The food was good but had a limited menu as though they were running on limited staff for off season. I would have enjoyed the stay more if it had been warmer. I spent the whole time wearing my fleece and even went to bed wearing my fleece and socks. The other problem we had was that the power goes off at Midnight until 5am (as do all the lodges apparently). No one told us that until we arrived and it wouldn't have been a problem except that my dad, who was travelling with us, suffers with sleep apnia and so needs a breathing machine through the night. However, after a few animated discussions with the manager, he did keep one of the generators on overnight which was much appreciated and they didn't charge us any extra although they wanted to at first. It might be good to take a torch just in case you need to get up in the night.

Although we have read some bad comments about the hotel and were a bit concerned, we cannot complain about anything! The room was very nice, perfectly clean (also the bathroom). The views are just spectacular and the staff was very hospitable. We liked our stay at the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge and would repeat again!

Most critical reviews of the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge focus on the dated decor and the need for updates and modernization. While that might be true - to some extent - I was not there for the decor and I was not planning on spending all my time at the lodge. I was looking for a nice accommodations - clean, comfortable rooms; comfortable bed; clean washroom; ability to recharge my camera and phone; a comfortable place to relax; good selection of dishes at breakfast and dinner - and on all counts, the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge delivered! Staff are courteous, friendly, and efficient too. And to top it all off, the Lodge provided a view that was second to none in the Conservation Area. Sitting on the edge of the caldera, one got a panoramic view of the caldera floor - from the lounge, restaurant and from every room - with the ability to see animals on the caldera floor with a good set of binoculars. Now you can't beat that! So as a place to rest, relax, recoup before and after a day's adventure in the caldera, the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge more than delivers.

To sleep on the rim of the Ngorogoro crater and to have a 360 degree view of the crater before the trip into the crater is what makes this venue extremely special. Park East Africa in Arusha arranged my visit and they suggested this Lodge. The Lodge might be on the older side and one might expect a broader variety at breakfast but that is not the essence of the trip. Please support local tour operators. Park East Africa based in Arusha was great - Jubilant was extremely helpful.

First of all, I'll get the location and view out of the way - unbelievable. Just amazing. The balcony from the bar and restaurant hang over the edge of the crater and give the most fantastic panoramic views that I'm sure are hard to beat anywhere else. A great bonus for my wife was that at times we had Buffalo chomping on the vegetation just under the balcony.

The views are continued into the hotel rooms themselves, but these rooms are fairly basic and could do with updating. That said, the mosquito guards were in good nick, the bed was comfy and the room itself was, well, roomy enough! Take note that the power throughout the hotel GOES OFF BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 0500! This isn't too much of an issue as I was there with the other half and friends, so we were in the bar area and carried on boozing by candlelight by the open fire until about 0200 ;o)

It was a little disappointing that when we woke up at 0545 the power clearly hadn't been on long enough to heat up the water, as the shower didn't run hot until about 0615 which could have made a really bad start to the day... Breakfast was fine, no major choice, but plenty of fresh fruit and pastries on offer.

The staff were fine, no major positives or negatives with any of them, and the check-in and out process was handled quickly and efficiently. Having said that, the night guard was great value and socialised 'till the small hours with us after we invited him to join us!

Great view till the clouds came. Then there was no view at all. We were so happy that the hotel was near by the crater. The room was good and clean. Next day we left without lunch because our trip organizer Hennie Becker of Fleetfoot Safari's said there was 'no lunch available'. But our drivers had a good lunchbox from the hotel. Grrrr!
