“Location, Price & Comfort at Ngoro”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

Upon check in the hotel greeted us with warm towells to wipe off. A very nice touch that was common at our hotels on our limited safari. Check in was easy, but our room reaked of smoke and we returned immediately for a change. They were quick to relocate us and the view, well, how does it get better?! A sweeping view of the crater from above view a window that took up the entire wall cannot be beat. I sat down, grabbed my binoculars and started spotting elephants and herds of buffalo. Wow, if only it were not dusk, I would have stayed there for hours.
Buffet meals are included, and are decent, but nothing great. I can see where some rooms are noisier than others, and you may want to request a room away from the dining area, as possible. Service was good, but not great. I might rate this 3 stars to US standards, but the price was much better than some of the other lodges and given the room had hot running water, a nice bathroom, and a view that was 6 stars on a 5 star scale, I cannot help but move this up to very good. The other nice part is our driver had a place to stay without us needing to pay for special accomodations, that the Crater Lodge wanted. At a fraction of the cost, I would repeat in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: As far from dining area as possible is suggested.

We went for our honeymoon during the rainy season...Not much rain...Great views, nice rooms, and friendly staff...yeah the food could be better, and warmer but we're not there for the food...Our BIGGEST complaint was some of the bar staff trying to OVER-CHARGE for drinks...

Wow - amazing place to stay for the views. The rooms are standard but the common areas are beautiful. Wonderful fireplace and very large balcony facing the crater. The buffet dinner was nice too. Very nice staff

Having read the varied reviews before going we weren't expecting a great experience. However, not only does the hotel have a stunning view but our room shared it. The room was clean and the bathroom facilities were good. This was once a Government run hotel and is being improved by current owners so I'd rely on more recent reviews of it. The food, other than pancakes made to order, was a little disappointing.

Located on top of the crater wall, it offers fantastic views from the bedrooms an large balcony that sourrounds the dinind and lounge areas.
Its a very large hotel, that was probably built in the seventies, with very tall walls, and lots of decorations.
Its very cold in there since you are high up the mountains, but what also seemed cold was the atmosphere, in my case I prefer smaller hotels, less crowded, and cozier.
Rooms are comfortable and clean, with a big window that covers a whole wall, facing the crater.
It takes a while to get to your room, since the hotel has about a 100 rooms!
Promised hot water took a while to appear but it finally did, after a short trip to reception.
In the morning we were awakend by a sound that seemed to come from the bathroom pipes, or frome somenone snoring from next room, but it was actually a lion very close to our window! Unluckily we were unable to see it since it was 6 am and it was still pitch black outside, but at receptcion they confirmed this!
Food was ok, and we left early in the morning with packed breakfast boxes that were quite generous, great bakery things, nto very common in Africa.
All said, I would choose a smaller lodge next time, I imagine in high season it gets extremely crowded here.

Room Tip: If you stay in winter time, ask for extra blankets, there are none in the bedroom, they will just go...

Great hotel with the best views in the world. Each room has a glass window the full height & width of the room looking down on the crater. Good food.

This lodge overall was absolutely lovely! Most of the lodges in Tanzania are in stunning locations obviously due to the geography and most have grand entrances and lobby areas. The bar/lounge area is very comfortable with a fireplace for the cooler months. For anyone who is into photography it's worth getting up early for the sunrises here! The terrace runs the length of the lodge and sitting there soaking up the breathtaking view is just heaven. This lodge also had lovely rooms, ours was not large but very comfortable - it was on the lower ground floor but we were not disadvantaged by this as the lodge sits at the edge of the crater and has split levels. I imagine all rooms would have a spectacular view. We had no problems with plumbing, hot water or cleanliness. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food, as with most lodges in Africa, is rather average (and sometimes dissappointing) due to the buffet style which is usually not piping hot. We are spoilt for the quality and variety of food in Australia and therefore I usually don't have high expectations when it comes to food when travelling to places such as this, however I do expect hot food to be hot. Overall the quality and variety of the food could certainly be improved upon.

In our experience, the star ratings given to hotels/lodges in Africa and the Middle East cannot be compared with European star ratings - eg a 5 star hotel in this region for example may only be on a similar par to that of a European/Western 4 star hotel. Like various other places in Africa they do not have 24/7 electricity - so what - just deal with it for a night or two - it won't kill you. These things just need to be considered when travelling generally and if you've done some research and you're informed before you get there, you'll have a fabulous trip like we did!

Room Tip: As the lodge sits at the edge of the crater, I imagine all rooms would have a spectacular view - we...
