We were only at the Plantation lodge for 1 night. We stayed one of the Honeymoon suites. It was lovely, with a little living room area where there was a log fire, the bedroom was nice complete with a four poster bed with a mosquito net (always useful) and a large bathroom that had a jacuzi. The layout of the plantation lodge is nice with a cozy bar area and balcony with a view outside. The food was great as well.
The downside was the atmosphere, maybe it was just the night we stayed, however, there was no atmosphere and although the lodge was full, the bar area was empty.
Great if you want some luxury on your safari

We stayed at Plantation Lodge for couple days this December as the base for visiting Ngorongoro crater. The Lodge is located in nice quite surroundings few minutes of rough drive from a village called Karatu (most roads in Tanzania are in a very bad state and can only be passed in a 4x4).

The Lodge has been run by a German lady for over 20 yrs (she was actually there for Xmas) and I have to praise her for doing a great job, especially given that it's quite difficult to find quality staff among local population.

The rooms are nice (ask for the Coffe House -- it's really nice), the food in the all-inclusive package is reasonable for couple days but certainly lacks variety if you stay there for longer. The service is good, however no telephones in the rooms, so you have to walk to the reception (no more than 50 meteres depending on a room) to tell them what you want.

Overall, relaxing atmosphere of a family-run lodge. The Ngorongoro crater itslef is absolutely awesome, especially from observation points on the road leading down to it! I promise you will not regret going there. One of the most impressive natural views I have ever seen. Just to be clear, the Lodge itself is quite far from the crater (I believe about 30 km) and probably not ideal location wise if you are visiting the crater but the drive is very educational as they take you through few villages by a very decent road and you can see how people around live. Besides, there aren't many decent places to stay in the area -- Tanzania is not that developed as a tourist country as e.g. neighbouring Kenya.

I definitely recommend staying at the Plantation Lodge but no more than couple days as it may get too boring.

We stayed here 1 night while visiting Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater and the location is very nice in between both parcs and in a nice setting on a hill. The pool was great to take a quick bath after a full day in a safari car. Everything is very green and there is a big garden with different houses. These are beautiful, in nice african style. Very charming with a huge comfortable bed. The dinner was one of the best we had during our 3 weeks stay in Tanzania. Breakfast was huge and excellent. They have a nice terrace where they serve great wines and even a fireplace at the bar, which was nice to relax before/after dinner.

We loved this lodge - small set in beautiful grounds with flowers and treesand birds. Our room was lovely and the large bed was the most comfortable of our stay (memory foam). Pool area was great and again the pool loungers were very comfy. Pool clean and cool with great views and pretty birds flying around. Our room was simply but elegantly furnished with fresh flowers and a lovely terrace. The bathroom was stunning - large corner bath and large walk in shower. Food was great and the staff went out of the way to attend to any special needs. Greetings and service was discreet - so not gushings of greetings but it all worked well. One day we came back and found some of our clothes had disappeared - the staff had washed themn for free. There is a great bar area and lovely basement wine cellar that you can see through the bar floor. Overall a very nice place that feels like staying as guests in a country house and a mile away from larger lodges.

We spent 2 nights at the Plantation lodge during our Safari in Tanzania. Good location if you want to see Lake Manyara National Park and Ngorogoro Crater. The Lodge itself is stunning - modern african design, very good but very "european" food. Compared to the other facilities of the Lodge the rooms are VERY basic. As it was quite fresh during our stay in September, the rooms were very chilly, there is no heating possibility and there are no extra blankets etc. available in the room. Compared to other Lodges and Camps we stayed in during our Safari the staff was quite unfriendly and coolly and the overall impression was somehow very "german". Not surprising as not even the owners managed to greet guests when they met them on the premises. Definitely room for improvement.

We stayed at the Plantation Lodge on safari while visiting Lake Manyara (about 90 min east) and the Ngorongoro Crater (30 min west). Well located if you want to do game viewing at these parks. A drive down a dusty, red clay dirt road reveals this cozy lodge set amidst a coffee plantation.

The atmosphere is probably more German/Dutch plantation than African, but well apointed. Rooms individually decorated with nice furnishings. We were upgraded to the Zanzibar suite which was outstanding.

Service is polite and attentive if not overly polished. The food is good-very good (breakfast is the weakest link) and there is a nice bar for a pre/post dinner drink and nibbles.

Best
-Well located for Ngorongoro and Lake Manyara game viewing (great picnic lunches)
-Nice, individually decorated rooms.
-Quiet, serene atmosphere (a good break post game drive)

Worst
-If you want a view of the Crate from your lodging--this isn't for you (30 min away)
-Decor is more german/dutch than African.

Last Sept I had my best holiday ever in Tanzania. That's why we'll repeat it soon :-)
We travelled with a very experienced local travel agency Green Footprint Adventures (as I noticed they changed their name to www.planetafricasafaris.com), which was recommended by Lonely Planet as they "organises upmarket rides". So, this travel agency put us in Plantation Lodge and we had an excellent staying there. The service and the food was very high quality. The garden beautiful and there's possibility to have your lunch there. We could really enjoy to have a delicious soup just together in he garden. The hotel is very nice, everybody's privacy is highly respected given the fact that the lodge consist of more separate buildings, actually we had our own "apartment".
The rest of our trip was not less though: we had a trip to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro with Plantation Lodge accomodation, then we took the regional flight to Serengheti and we spent 2 nights in Suyan camp and an other 2 nights at Mara river in Sayari camp. It was fantastic, to sleep in the savanna in a luxury tent, having flush toilet in the tent and full service! Something that you should try once :-) I'll upload some pictures about Plantation and about the camps... we highly enjoyed all of them!
