The Plantation Lodge & Safaris

We were lucky enough for a family of 4 to book into the Coffee House Suites. This gave us both sides of this huge bungalow. Each side consisted of a bedroom, balcony, living room, large bathroom and small sitting area. The bedroom and living rooms both had fireplaces. The furnishings were impeccable, and luxurious. Outside, there was a private garden and patio, shared between both sides. Each side is normally booked as a triple each, so to have it for 4 people gave us a massive amount of room to spread out.

This is set in a working coffee plantation and wheat fields, amidst well-tended gardens.

The food is excellent here, served in very nice, intimate, semi-private dining areas. The staff are attentive.

Despite really enjoying our stay, we did have some issues. To start with, the suite was double-booked. Only because we'd arrived before the other party, and because we wouldn't back down, we actually got the suite that we had booked. The pool was closed for maintenance, although it looked very nice. The fireplace in one of the bedrooms smoked into the room, and really couldn't be ussed. There was no water pressure in the shower, and the water for bathing had a lot of brown sediment. Although they provide you loose tea, they don't provide a strainer (making tea drinking abit tricky).

These all were pretty minor points, in the end, because they didn't really detract from our fantastic stay here.

Very charming, clean, relaxing and peaceful. Stayed here 1 night w/ boyfriend as a transit place (after doing a game drive in the crater and on way to lake manyara) . Staff is great! Very friendly and accomodating. We also loved our room which was very clean and nicely decorated. Our veranda was nice (great view and big)but was adjoined w/ another room (no separating wall but it didn't really matter since didn't have time to enjoy it). The grounds were beautiful. Very green and nicely landscaped. The main dining & lobby area was also relaxing and nicely decorated. Had drinks before dinner and the staff served delicious appetizers (could have had just that for dinner). Food for dinner was just okay. We were expecting more esp after the tastey appetizers. They did serve a lot of fresh vegetables from their garden which was nice. We asked our driver how his accomdation was, and he said it was one of the best places for drivers since they don't have to share rooms w/ 3-4 other people, which we liked to hear. A lot can be said when quality of service is extended to the drivers. We def would stay here again and wished we had 1 or 2 more nights here. It was definately nice to add this to the mix of the various types of accomdations we stayed at. It almost felt like we were on a retreat, a nice break from the safari. You leave feeling refreshed & relaxed.

Set in the midst of coffee fields and nearby the crater. It was definitely one of the best lodges we had on our safari circuit. Nicely decorated rooms, lush gardens and - at this moment- a nice, clean pool. Food was excellent. I agree with all other critics: Plantation Lodge is an outstanding tranquil small lodge.

My wife and I spent two nights at Plantation Lodge during the visit of Ngorongoro.
The place is incredibly well kept, including the manucured garden.
Rooms are simple, but you do not need more. Service is very kind. Food is healthy, lots of vegetables. There are beautiful views from the small swimming pool.
This is not a luxury resort; you have the feeling of spending a few days with friends.
An illustration of their kindness : one of our two suitcases was missing when we landed at Kilimanjaro airport, coming from Amsterdam with KLM; hotel staff spontaneously took our used clothes to their laundry and returned these the next day !
Be aware that for the time being they only accept Visa cards; also, the place is close to the entrance of Ngorongoro park, but still one hour from the crater ground.

My fiance and I stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Ngorongoro crater on a recent 2 week trip to Tanzania - we were very pleased with our stay - this was one of my favorite hotels on the trip. The lodge itself is located approximately 15 minutes from the gate to Ngorongoro conservaton area within a region of rolling hills. The hotel grounds are gorgeous - lushly green and immaculately maintained. They also have a pretty swimming pool with a patio for sunbathing. Our room was enormous with a comfortable king bed and a huge bathroom with a walk in stone shower and a large veranda overlooking the gardens. The room was clean and bright, and very attractively furnished. The only thing lacking was a ceiling fan - we slept with the windows closed to limit the mosquitoes and it got a bit stuffy. The food was outstanding - among the best that we encountered in any of the hotels. We were also pleased with the service. Plantation lodge is a really charming alternative to the large, impersonal, crowded crater lodges.

Our room was amazing, very spacious, romantic, comfortable, and had a great outlook and the food was great compared to some other lodges we stayed at during our safari.
The staff were friendly however our room was about 300m from reception and there was no one to assist us with our luggage. Only other disappointment was the pool - which was full of swimming insects (under the water) so we chose not to hop in.
The grounds are beautifully manicured and its a great place to relax before heading to The Crater the next day.

We experienced no faults at this very tasteful and gourmet resort. The staff were extremely attentive though respectful of priavacy. The food was simple and superbly presented. Much of the produce was grown in their garden. Our small tour group had an entire building to ourselves with our rooms leading onto a beautiful open lounge with openfire.
It was a luxurious oasis after being on Safari. Highly recommended!
