“Lovely grounds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 24, 2012

We stayed here as part of a weeklong trip in Tanzania and stayed here for the Ngorongoro crater. The hotel is only 20min from the entrance to the crater, which is helpful as an extremely early start (5:30am) to the crater is ideal!
As we stayed in a camp before the Plantation Lodge and stay in one after, it makes for a nice break to stay somewhere with proper buildings. The surrounding is beautiful, very quiet and calm. The gardens are a joy to walk around. The staffs are friendly and helpful.

The room:
- We stayed in a suite, which is very large. It has a nice terrace attached to it.
- It has the main bedroom, which a large king size bed. A large bathroom with both a bath and a shower. A dressing room and a main area with sofa and dining table.
- As I am quite OCD, I would say the cleanliness is acceptable, but not the best. The bed is okay.

The Spa:
- The spa is lovely and very clean. The masseur was very good and service was good value for money.

Food experience:
- The dining room was nice. The food was of good quality. If time allows, I would recommend to have lunch at the outside terrace in the sun.

We stayed here for two nights during our Ngorongoro safari. It's only about a 30 min drive to get to the park so this place is in an excellent location.

The rooms are clean and well decorated with spacious patios. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly especially the staff executing food service. The grounds itself are beautiful and theres a great view from the pool area that overlooks the sun setting behind the hills.

I highly recommend this place.

We were pleasantly surprised when we pulled into Plantation Lodge, it was so peaceful and serene we liked it immediately. The room we stayed in was nicely decorated and comfortable. The dinner was first class from the lighting to the amazing bar area to the dinner itself which consisted of many courses. This would be a romantic place for a couple. We sat out under a tree and used the internet before dinner. The grounds are sprawling, green grass, shady trees, something out of the southern US. We would go back.....

We stayed at the lodge after being in Tarangire park, It was raining heavily as we aproached and wondered where we were heading over a very muddy field, until we turned the corner and arrived at the most beautiful landscaped gardens surrounding the lodge.
Our room was gorgeous, actually it was a large suite and a little bit of luxury after the bush! It was very clean and well maintained.

We quickly unpacked & settled in, then went to look around the rest of the property. It really is a little oasis set in the middle of farm land. A very nice pool and patio area, which unfortunatly weather and time didn't allow us to enjoy. Our first meal there was dinner which was very good, there is a wonderful bar with a glass floor looking down into the cellar.

We visited the crater the following day after a good nights sleep, breakfast was buffet style. It is only a few miles to th crater but does take a good while to get down there, (despite the fact we were there during a quite period.)
We were dissapointed with our 2nd evening meal, the dinning area we were in was also catering for a very large group, very noisey, and sadly our meal was poor in comparison to the previous evening.

However it is a good place to stay when visiting the crater.

We had the Avocado room which was spacious and furnished in total luxury with a king bed and a large, beautifully appointed bathroom The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the food exquisite; a gourmet meal using their own homegrown vegetables. The only issue I would take with this place is that their beautifully set pool was not one I would go into since it did not appear to be clean. Be sure to check it out before getting into your bathing suit.

A working Plantation so plenty of plants on the drive to it.
Lovely, well appointed, rooms set in spacious grounds and gardens.
It was a bit of a shock as all of the camps and hotels prior to, and after, this included house drinks so paying for drinks seemed strange. Perhaps they should consider falling in line?
The food was very good with a varied menu each night, so most enjoyable, BUT we really had a problem with the dining room. The tables are huge so that two people sitting opposite each other cannot have a conversation without it being overheard by others. Similarly, where there were tables of 4 people, or more they spoke so loud to be heard by each other that it is like them shouting. As a consequence, most tables being couples, it was like a church in the dining room with either people not talking or doing so in hushed tones so as not to be overheard. Most people wanted to eat and go as there was no atmosphere.
In the Camps it was communal dining so, by definition, sociable and a bit noisy which was great and in some hotels the dining atmosphere was more intimate so that couples could engage in quiet conversation.
We think that Plantation House has got this completely wrong in that it is neither sociable not intimate. They should either get smaller tables or, at least, put place seetings for couples such that they are adjacent to each other rather than opposite.
The dining room was our only negative point.

Lovely gardens, decent pool and terrace. Dining room was in the old Farmhouse and was beautifully furnished. Food was good - no choice (except if vegetarian) but delicious. Rooms large, clean and well maintained. All in all, a good base to visit the Ngorongoro Crater from.
