We were pleasantly surprised when we pulled into Plantation Lodge, it was so peaceful and serene we liked it immediately. The room we stayed in was nicely decorated and comfortable. The dinner was first class from the lighting to the amazing bar area to the dinner itself which consisted of many courses. This would be a romantic place for a couple. We sat out under a tree and used the internet before dinner. The grounds are sprawling, green grass, shady trees, something out of the southern US. We would go back.....

We stayed at the lodge after being in Tarangire park, It was raining heavily as we aproached and wondered where we were heading over a very muddy field, until we turned the corner and arrived at the most beautiful landscaped gardens surrounding the lodge.
Our room was gorgeous, actually it was a large suite and a little bit of luxury after the bush! It was very clean and well maintained.

We quickly unpacked & settled in, then went to look around the rest of the property. It really is a little oasis set in the middle of farm land. A very nice pool and patio area, which unfortunatly weather and time didn't allow us to enjoy. Our first meal there was dinner which was very good, there is a wonderful bar with a glass floor looking down into the cellar.

We visited the crater the following day after a good nights sleep, breakfast was buffet style. It is only a few miles to th crater but does take a good while to get down there, (despite the fact we were there during a quite period.)
We were dissapointed with our 2nd evening meal, the dinning area we were in was also catering for a very large group, very noisey, and sadly our meal was poor in comparison to the previous evening.

However it is a good place to stay when visiting the crater.

We had the Avocado room which was spacious and furnished in total luxury with a king bed and a large, beautifully appointed bathroom The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the food exquisite; a gourmet meal using their own homegrown vegetables. The only issue I would take with this place is that their beautifully set pool was not one I would go into since it did not appear to be clean. Be sure to check it out before getting into your bathing suit.

A working Plantation so plenty of plants on the drive to it.
Lovely, well appointed, rooms set in spacious grounds and gardens.
It was a bit of a shock as all of the camps and hotels prior to, and after, this included house drinks so paying for drinks seemed strange. Perhaps they should consider falling in line?
The food was very good with a varied menu each night, so most enjoyable, BUT we really had a problem with the dining room. The tables are huge so that two people sitting opposite each other cannot have a conversation without it being overheard by others. Similarly, where there were tables of 4 people, or more they spoke so loud to be heard by each other that it is like them shouting. As a consequence, most tables being couples, it was like a church in the dining room with either people not talking or doing so in hushed tones so as not to be overheard. Most people wanted to eat and go as there was no atmosphere.
In the Camps it was communal dining so, by definition, sociable and a bit noisy which was great and in some hotels the dining atmosphere was more intimate so that couples could engage in quiet conversation.
We think that Plantation House has got this completely wrong in that it is neither sociable not intimate. They should either get smaller tables or, at least, put place seetings for couples such that they are adjacent to each other rather than opposite.
The dining room was our only negative point.

Lovely gardens, decent pool and terrace. Dining room was in the old Farmhouse and was beautifully furnished. Food was good - no choice (except if vegetarian) but delicious. Rooms large, clean and well maintained. All in all, a good base to visit the Ngorongoro Crater from.

First stop on our honeymoon, we spent two nights here loved it. Think the owners are German from way back in the day when it was an active coffee plantation (didn't work out if it still was an active plantation) we were in the Jacaranda Suite, huge comfortable bed, big bathroom, peacefully decorated. Dinners here are amazing, four course meal every night with a choice of mains. Wished they had more local dishes available though.

We only visited the Ngorogoro Crater from here, you need a whole day, the hotel packed a lovely picnic hamper for us, that our driver set out in the car (you can have it in the picnic areas, but you get attacked by the birds looking for food) I thought the contrast was great, dusty, tiring game drive and you come back to a beautiful hidden hotel, with amazing food, great service, lovely bar area and friendly German Shepard dog! Most of the wines available are south African, prices starting from 30usd for a bottle.

The breakfast selection isn't huge, but you can order eggs and bacon fresh. Nothing to fault about this place. You should try and meet Trev the handyman, lots of cool stories. There is also a small pool, we didn't have time to use it.

We spent 3 outstanding nights in Umbutu Camp and 2 superb nights in Dunia Camp in the Serengeti before arriving at Plantation Lodge near the Crater. We were amazed at the beautiful grounds that existed inside the gates of Plantation Lodge. It was almost like being transported to the beautiful grounds of a hotel in the Caribbean! We were somewhat concerned about staying this far from the Crater gate, but our guide had us in the crater as early as we wanted to be there, so this location was no problem at all! The lodge bed was very comfortable and the bathroom... aaaaaahhhh... it had a shower with as much constant hot water and water pressure that you could desire. After 20 liter bucket showers, we were so excited to have a bathroom as nice as we had back home! Mmmmmmmmm. The rooms have beautiful vaulted ceilings and the beds are large and comfortable. We loved the beauty of the dining room at the lodge and the lovely walks we took around the grounds. After being in the Serengeti for 5 nights, we had free internet access here along with satellite TV. We thought it was hilarious that we were sitting in our room in Plantation Lodge after dinner... in the middle of (what feels like) nowhere... watching a small TV that had access to "That 70s Show"... we got a kick out of this. Can you tell we're just a bit addicted to internet and TV? For those of you coming from very nice tented camps like Umbutu and Dunia, the level of service here at Plantation is more comparable to that you receive in a hotel rather than the personal attention you get from the tented camps. This is to be expected because there are at least twice the number of guests here as at the tented camps. But folks here are still respectful and attentive to your needs as you ask.
