Ngorongoro Farm House, Tanganyika Wilderness Camps

I've spent two nights at Ngorongoro Farm House last month during my 12th trip to Northern Tanzania.
I've been travelling extensively accross the region during the last 20 years, I have been in love with Gibb's Farm by the time it was the only farm-lodge in the area, then my preference moved to the rather more rustic but yet more authentic Planation Lodge and, after reading of positive feedbacks, I decided to visit Ngorongoro Farm House.
Despite quite new (it's been open in 2003) this lodge reproduces the atmosphere of an old colonial house and it does it quite well indeed. It's set on a green hill slope, amidst lush gardens, coffee plantations and lots of flower. It consists of a main house (a white-washed one storey building covered by a thatch roof) which hosts the restaurant and bar and some 30 something large and airy tin-roofed bungalows scattered within the vast property, quite distant from each other. Heavy wood furniture, clay bricks and some details contribute to create a sense of rural rustic colonial style. Each bungalows has its own private verandah and sitting area with views of the Karatu hills and the forest. There's also a nice swimming pool. Food is extremely good and varied, most grens come directly from the gardens.
Ngorongoro Farm House may represent a slightly lower specification than neighbouring Gibb's or Plantation, but it is still a great option in this area at a lower price. Highly recommended.

We stayed here two nights. As other reviewers have noted the rooms are huge with a comfy queen sized bed. There is a fireplace too. Its quite a walk from the room to the dining and pool area and very dark to walk after dinner. The food was OK, nothing to write home about. Other than Fatuma, who was wonderfull, we found the staff to be either rude or disinterested. The surrounding property and gardens were quite lovely.

This huge lodge (maybe a little big too big to be very cozy) is beautifully situated near the entrance of the crater. Garden is looking great, pool is perfect and the food good.
Rooms are very spacy although you can easily hear the neighbours, that could be bothersome.
In line with teh site it is one of the most touristical lodges I have visited.
What I found utterly ridiculous, they only told me to have internet in thier computer room (5$ for 30 mins) where my wifi recognised a strong wifi signal and we saw the receiver and antenna's in the dining) Clearly not for the guests, they should really change that in free wifi. Lots of other lodges do, even from the same owner.......
If you are not very mobile pls ask for a room close to the main building otherwise your room could be a very long walk away!

Ngorongoro Farm house is a very nice property, spread over a huge area, very well maintained and pretty to look at. The rooms are neat and clean, comfortable to stay in and HUGE. The food is also pretty good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Overall its a nice place to stay with two riders - firstly there is no fan in the room. So in the summer season it can get a bit sttuffy in the room at night. The only other point is, though it is 5 min from the gate, it is more than an hours drive to inside the crater. So if possible try for a hotel within the crater, will save you driving time but again it will be more expensive and gets sold out sooner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the reception or be ready for a long walk at lunch and dinner time..

We loved this place so much we didn't want to leave. Unfortunately they were booked. From the gorgeous grounds to our little cottages that overlooked the plains and the food...couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to spend time after long days driving around looking at animals.
They even had a little show with Maasai for dinner that we got to participate in.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms overlooking the plains. We got to see a Maasai hunting antelope.

After having stayed at the big hotels at Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Seronera Wildlife Lodge in Serengeti we were so pleased to arrive at the Farm House. The surroundings are really beautiful and very well kept. The pool is clean and inviting. We were 4, so we stayed in one building with 2 separate rooms. The room was really lovely and very large and the double bed with its mosquitonet gave us a good sleep. The view from our room over the fields was gorgeous.
The main building is also very well kept and beautiful. We went on the farm walk which was very interesting as we were introduced to all the products grown there.
We had nice appetizers at the deck before dinner and were entertained by some local folks (not so interesting). The meal was good and so was the breakfast. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and since it was a coffee farm coffee was free at all times.
We loved staying there and would have liked staying another night, but we had to move on.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights. Our room was a standalone cabin, with a huge bed and nice furnishings. We had full board, and the food was excellent. Breakfast: eggs made to order (including omelets), fruit, bacon, sausage... Lunch: they made us lunch boxes to take on our safari. Dinner: huge buffet. They also had cocktail hour every night. The grounds are gorgeous. The only slight downside was that we wanted to go on a walk on the property, and they didn't have a map to direct us to walking paths to see their farm. I'm a big bug-phobic, and I didn't see a single bug in our room the whole time we were there.
