“So much better than expected!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2009

Was a bit worried about this hotel after reading reviews from this site. I was very pleasantly surprised! Stayed there 2 nights. The food in the restaurant was very good, the service excellent (better than the serengeti sopa lodge we stayed in afterwards) and the food very good and plentiful (we didn't ever have room for dessert!). Room was huge, with a nice balcony, where we got to observe 3 buffaloes eating away right outside our room! After supper, staff would bring us back to our room, with umbrella in hand if needed! Bathroom was obviously newly renovated, with a nice ceramic shower. We were very close from the crater, which is a definite must. Ah, and let's not forget the AMAZING view of the crater!
Only downside is that internet was slow and expensive (10$ for 30 minutes) but let's not forget we're in Africa...
So, don't worry, this hotel is excellent!

really nice hotel, only stayed one night but were very impressed with the lovely room overlooking the crater. Entertainment and food was good but be aware of drink prices, we decided to have 1/2 caraff of the house red wine and it cost us something like $20, destroyed the experience somewhat.

I stayed here for one night with my wife after spending the day in Ngorongoro Crater. We were greeted with warm towels on arrival. At check-in, I asked for an upper-level room close to the center of the property to get the best view. The staff member at the front desk seemed as though he was obliging, yet we ended up nearly all the way at the end, downstairs, with no view of the crater. This was disappointing, but not that big of a deal for just one night.

The room was large, but with a separated entry-way that seemed to be a waste of space. The bathroom seemed to have been recently renovated. The shower water pressure was the best we had in Africa. The sheets and blankets could definitely use an upgrade, as they were uncomfortable and had stains.

The bar and restaurant areas had nice decor and beautiful views. For dinner we were served an appetizer and then the rest was a buffet, which was really good. There are computers with internet access (for a fee) in the lobby area.

The location is on the east side of the caldera. There is a path down to the crater from this side, but our safari driver preferred not to take this route because it is much steeper. It could also have been because it was raining at the time.

Being on the east side was not ideal for people like us who were going to the Serengeti after check-out. We had to spend nearly an hour to drive back to the other side of the caldera (where we had entered the crater the previous day) before heading on to Serengeti. Logistically, for us it would have made more sense to stay on the west side of the crater, which is where the other crater lodges are situated.

Spent 3 nights here in February. Not a luxury hotel, but it was better than I expected from previous reviews. Beautiful setting and layout. Found the staff and service in general to be excellent. Always greeted with friendly smiles. Food was very good. Great location to reach the crater quickly. Gorgeous views. I wasn't here for the pool, so it didn't matter that it was cold.

We stayed in Sopa Lodges for two nights in December 2008.
The rooms and hotel itself is nice and spacious with very nice overview to the crater. I like the interior of the hotel. Should agree with comments about pool - it was freezing (no more than +18C).

There are only two things why I would not recommend this hotel: 1) first is the service 2) food in restaurant.

1) Service:
The service in this hotel is under any critics. You cant compare with any other Sopa lodge or hotel in Tanzania. It seems like hotel is just overbooked and nobody cares about quality.
Our room didn’t had bottled water for teeth washing, which was important by the fact that the water in the bathroom was yellow/light brown colour. After 3 times reminding in reception we got bottled water, but it was only on the next morning.
I also suggest to count the bill by yourself before sign (this I suggest to do during the all trip in Tanzania).

2) Restaurant (food)
The restaurant itself was great, but the food wasn’t good: the potatoes was raw, desserts was terrible, and steak wasn’t steak but pieces of meat in sauce. Till now don’t understand why they cook things which they have no idea how it should taste like? Breakfast has various offer but unfortunately no any vegetables.

From the location and interior point of view I would say - great hotel, but service and food quality turn my opinion about this hotel down. This is the worst Sopa I was during all safari.

It was a huge relief arriving here following a less-than-pleasant experience at the bug-filled Serengeti Sopa Lodge. The rooms are updated, clean and relatively bug-free, the hot water hours are convenient, the food is quite good, and the views are stunning. Best of all the altitude is not supportive of mosquitoes. They aren't kidding when they warn people to be mindful when walking around at night - there were two buffalo sightings on the main path and one was having a drink out of the pool. There is no exercise facility and the pool is hypothermia-inducing cold so it is hard to get a work out in. Otherwise it was a great place to stay.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel except that it's located near the eastern access road into the crater, which gets you to the crater floor faster and earlier than everyone coming from the hotels on the western side of the crater. This was my main reason for choosing the property, and being the only ones on the crater floor from 6:30am to 7:30am (while everyone else was navigating the treacherous western access road) was pretty amazing.

This property caters very much to large groups, which can leave solo travellers and family groups feeling ignored. Service was a bit impersonal. Despite my mother's limited mobility, we were given a room very far from the main building, because large groups had been allotted the closest, and best, rooms.

Food was plentiful and good at breakfast and lunch. Dinners were served as three course meals with small portions. I would have preferred buffet dinners.

Room was large with a great view. Hot shower, clean bathroom, clean sheets. (I was surprised to see so many reviews here citing dirty sheets. Perhaps they've replaced their linens recently.)

Internet access is expensive and there are only three computers, so after returning from an afternoon game drive, you may have to wait for a computer. The speed of the satellite internet was variable, from slow to non-functioning.

Do NOT use your credit card at this property, especially if you are not American. They convert all the charges to US dollars at a TERRIBLE exchange rate before charging your card in US dollars only. No option to charge your card in Euro, Pound, or TZS.
