“Great location with beautiful sunset views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge for one night in February. The lobby, dining room, and bar are all beautiful and all have amazing views of the crater. We really enjoyed sitting out by the pool and watching the sunset over the crater with a glass of wine. Recommendation: If you want to get an outdoor seat by the bar or dining room to watch the sunset, get there early - this is a very large hotel, and it was very full when we were there. The food was better than at some of the other places we stayed during our trip – there was plated dinner that included various options, and a buffet breakfast. The service was very good, and we had a great table next to the window with a beautiful view (at breakfast when it was light outside). The rooms felt a little tired and in need of an update. We were in the very last room in the row, which did not have a crater view and was very plain inside. The shower did not drain very well, and there appeared to be a little bit of mold in the grout. After staying at small, tented lodges for the rest of our trip, we were underwhelmed with Sopa, but if you are going to the crater, I would recommend it for an overnight.

This hotel has a large entry area with a bar and restaurant and huge patio with pool and a beautiful view of the Ngorongoro Crater. The rooms were spacious with a small enclosed patio with two rocking chairs and a table. Hot water is only available at certain times (I think it was 5-8 am and 5-8 pm) but was not an issue for us. We only ate breakfast and it was a buffet and most adequate for our needs.

Although March is not possibly the best time to visit Ngorongoro Crayer due to rain, Sopa lodge is ideal and the staff went out of their way to make pur stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Enjoyed a spectacular sunset on our first night. It rained a lot during the night and woke to a misty morning. Enjoyed Crater visit in overcast conditions. Lots of hippo and hyena activity while lions preferred to sleep all day. Sopa staff very helpful. Good ambience and great access to crater.

We stayed here at the beginning of March for 2 nights.
Our room was excellently located on the 2nd floor close to the reception area. I liked the rocking chairs on the enclosed balcony and view of the crater.
Even though it was by our standards warm in the evening we had hot water bottles in our beds! There was lots of hot water and the shower pressure is good.
The food was adequate to good, buffet mostly...you have different servers all the time here.
The hot water starts at 5 pm, and dinner starts at 7 pm. We were able to see Masai dancers in the lounge before dinner. Electricity is available all the time. The location is excellent for travelling down into the crater.
The boxed lunch was similar to the other Sopa Lodges lunches.

Large clean rooms, nice swimming pool, nice seating area in front of the main building above the pool with a fantastic view. The restaurant was a buffet with a large selection - the food was good but not very good. This hotel relies on its superb location. The staff were friendly.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are much closer to the main building than others. All seem to have a view out over...

The lodge has a lot to offer. The rooms are large, well appointed and very clean. The lobby and restaurant is amazing. The view of the crater is exceptional. The lodge is located on the north end of the crater (which is a long drive from the main entrance to the crater) and is a very short drive to one of the only two roads down to the Park. Unfortunately, the food was by far the worst of all of the lodges and tented camps in which we stayed. Breakfast was OK, but much of the food served at the buffet dinner was barely edible. Also, our room was on a lower level and the people in the room above us were amazingly loud and rude, making noise late through the night and early in the morning.

Room Tip: The advice found in prior reviews concerning room selection are accurate.
