“Average Accommodation in a Spectacular Setting”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

My husband and I stayed for two nights here while on safari. Our room was large, but somewhat uninspired and had a dated feel to it.

The views of the Crater are outstanding but the facility itself is large and seems somewhat impersonal. After being in small, tented camps for most of our week, it was a somewhat disappointing end to our trip.

The wifi was quite erratic, but that seems to be a Tanzanian phenomenon. Hot water is only available at certain times of the day (5-8 pm and 5-8 am) which proved to be an inconvenience after a long day of travel when we arrived tired and dusty at 4 pm.

The staff were for the most part pleasant and helpful, although there seemed to be some hiccups with service in the dining room. Food was good but not outstanding.

The Sopa is close to one of the access roads to the Crater which made it convenient for the game drive. Would recommend it for its location and view.

Room Tip: Request a Crater view relatively close to the Main lodge.

12/1/14 - Arrived around 3pm after our visit to the crater and this place certainly had the wow factor for us. Met and taken into reception to book in, offered a cold drink and towel. The reception was large and did feel like a European hotel.
We went to our room which was only a few steps from reception, as requested, wow, opened the door to a big reception area with wardrobe, table with tea & coffee and plugs for charging electrical equipment, this led through to a big bathroom, large bedroom with two double beds, dressing table and a panoramic window complete with rocking chairs. The view was amazing into the crater and we could see the Maasai and their herds entering and exiting the crater.
It was nice to have some down time after our hectic week and this was our last stop before heading back to Arusha the next day.
We sorted out our cases before heading to the bar for a well earned cocktail and use of the free internet to catch up with friends and family. We sat in the sunshine overlooking the crater. There were waiters on hand to take orders for drinks so you didn't have to move from your sunlounger/chair if you didn't want to. There was a small pool but some wasps seemed to have made a nest at one end. There was a lovely bar area with comfy sofas, and a gift shop off the reception area.
Dinner was buffet and there was a good selection and we enjoyed the food. The dining room has glass panoramic windows so again a good view into the crater. Waiter introduced himself and referred to us by name which I thought was a nice personal touch. After a lovely dinner, Maasai dance show and a further cocktail we headed off to our room and our large comfy beds. Best night’s sleep of the whole week.
When we got back to our room they must have thought we were a couple as only one bed was turned down which happened to be the one my daughter picked. In she hopped only to shriek and jump back out again. I thought there must have been something in the bed, and yes they had put hot water bottles in and she wondered what on earth she had put her foot on. We had a good laugh over that.
Buffet breakfast in the morning was good with plenty of choice.
As our TO said "finish and go out on a high!" He was right.

Very nice upscale hotel. My room was very large and well appointed. Foor was excellent as well - I enjoye the buffet dinner and the large selection of breakfast items. Wifi is available in the lobby. The hotel has a very nice view of the crater, and from my room. Shower is from 5-8 am/pm from what I remember.

Perched on the edge of the caldera, this is one special hotel. Great staff, great, large rooms and first class food make this a pick for us. We stayed in the Sopa lodge in Tarangire and thought this was pretty good but this one is better. Recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view over the caldera

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge was lovely! The staff were really friendly and welcoming. The rooms were clean and very spacious, even with some cheeky uninvited guests! ( a baboon stole our fruit basket in a split second!) Beautiful views and very good cocktails!!! The restaurant was a spectacular building, so impressive and such a lovely environment in the evening! Don't be put off by people telling you that it gets very cool in the creator, you do need a cardigan in the morning, but by mid-morning and lunch time, you are stripping off again!

First, this place is gorgeous, set high at the rim of the crater. It is pricey and very high end but honestly I longed for a nice tent as this was too "touristy" for my taste. The main area is beautiful with nice sitting areas, the dining room is huge. The pool was too cold to use and I am not sure who ever would have the time as everyone heads down into the amazing Ngorogoro Crater. Our rooms were large and clean but way down on the end downhill and at the altitude we were huffing and puffing when we walked back and forth. You are escorted at night and they check the trees for leopards. (kind of cool) This was a busy, fully booked place with lots of people. As our guide said (and he was right) "it was not close to nature." I have to agree. It was luxurious, beautiful views and well run but a bit too orchestrated for our safari taste.

Room Tip: Get a room close to the main lodge--high altitude and we were way down at the bottom with a tough hi...
