Spent two nights here ... Room was large, great view, lotsa hot water (it was supposedly turned off at some time ... but that didn't effect me). The downside was the dated rooms and the hike up the hill to the lodge. A number of the people in our tour had major difficulty trekking from lodge to their room. However, I do realize that it's mighty difficult to build on the edge of a volcanic crater. If you have walking difficulty, you'd better ask for one of the rooms to the left of the lodge (looking out to the crater). Food was OK ... service was good ... but here's one thing that I learned that FLOORED ME in both Kenya and Tanzania, the EXCHANGE RATE for a $1 USD is lower than that of $5 USD or higher. Tipping is fine with $1 for small tasks, but bring some $5's for drivers and guides and bundle some money for tips to wait staff ... no imposition on you ... more for them.

We spent 2 nights at Sopa Lodge, the first night they put us in a room with no view and that was the reason we picked Sopa was for the view, the 2nd night they moved us.
The Lodge , Bar & Restaurant are very nice but the rooms are very average I was expecting more luxurious accommodations

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and loved it. Our cottage was clean and inviting and the hot water bottles in the evening were a great touch! We were in #88 and it was a bit of a hike up and down to the restaurant. In the evenings guards are available to walk you down to your door as the baboons feed quite close to the walkways. Service was very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We enjoyed the Masaaii singing and dancing in the evenings. Views from the grounds into the crater were spectacular. This lodge is also very well placed for the descent road into the crater. Highly recommended.

We spent 2 nights here and the lodge and location were spectacular. Very close to the descent road into the crater meant that it was a quick 10 minute drive to head into the crater. The rooms were large and well maintained. You may want to ask for a room close to the main building as a distant room is a decent walk and you are at about 8,000 feet so oxygen is a little thin.

The pool was great but really, really cold. It was perfect the first day to cool down in as it was a very hot day. I can see that for many days the temperature of the pool might not suit all.

Food was very good and the service was perfect. A great location to see the crater from.

So if you feel strongly about spending your vacation at places that are pleasing to the eye, tastefully designed, rather small and not crowded, this is NOT your place to go.
If you appreciate a strong, hot shower, huge bathrooms, free wifi (slow but it works...) and a huge variety of food options offered you may actually consider this lodge for your stay.

For design lovers, this is definitely a disappointment - reminded me of the ugly concrete tourist blocks on the Canary Islands, or the Balearic Island, dating back to the 80s (if not earlier...). Also, the place is huge- they have easily 100 rooms or so. Our room was at the very end of the property so it took us a solid 5 minutes to walk to the lobby. The room's decor was really ugly (for my personal taste): I have never been to the Soviet Union in the Eighties but that is what I would have imagined a hotel room in communist Moscow or Budapest to have looked like... Old, brown, smelly carpet, dark wooden beds, plastered white walls, cheap dark curtains. Forgive me, travelers from Moscow or Budapest... I love both your cities - just wanted to illustrate the point...

As other reviewers have stated, the view into the crater is goergeous though - with good binoculars you can even see some animals down on the crater floor from the lodge's terrace.

That being said, staff were very friendly, and they really went out of their way on New Year's Eve where they decorated the tables with home-made crackers and putting a personalized gift and greeting card into each room. We also really enjoyed the variety of food options from the buffet. The chef is Indian so lots of Indian choices, but also pasta, soups, salads, veggies, omeletts and even a desert buffet.

We chose this lodge because of its location (relatively) close to the Empakaai crater and would probably go there again for convenience. We will not remember it for its beautiful design though ;-)

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the lobby have a better view into the crater than those at the edges of the property...

The common areas of this lodge are very nice and the food was very good. Staff are really nice and accommodating. The rooms could use a bit of an update but are very clean so that doesn't really matter as you aren't in them much. We only spent one night here and it was too cold to use the pool but it looked very inviting. Sometimes the animals will wander right through the grounds, we had a Cape Buffalo and a Leopard visit the grounds when we were there but didn't get to see them ourselves :-( Overall I would recommend this lodge, very comfortable and stunning views over the crater.

Room Tip: If you don't want a bit of a walk, ask for a room closer to the main lodge.

We stayed here for one night on a 5-day safari. The views over the crater were spectacular and the common areas are quite lovely (restaurant, pool area, outdoor terraces and bar). Perfect location for sunsets! But we found it a bit over-priced for what you get, especially given the plethora of options in the area - the lodge is a bit dated, we didn't have hot water in our room in the morning, our mini-fridge in the room didn't work, the pool is ice-cold.... Overall we still enjoyed our stay but found it over-priced for what you get.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the crater (2nd floor is preferable)
