“Stunning Sunset Views. Private Viewings of Birds and Small Animals”
Reviewed October 18, 2013

Perched atop the Eastern rim of Ngorongoro Crater, the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge has unsurpassed views of the sunset, with flat-topped acacias in the foreground to really embellish those iconic sunset photos!
The accomodation is quintessential safari lodge, modeled on traditional Masai and Swahili architecture and decorated with Tanzanian artifacts. You really are catapulted into the aesthetics, as well as the natural environment of East Africa.
Groomed plantings of succulents and other indigenous species are evident close to the paths, and rooms, but soon give way to the original habitat of the surrounding conservation area.
I went out birding at dusk and was soon ably assisted by one of the security officers, who took me to the obscure spots, rarely frequented by guests, revealing bush baby nesting trees and many, many rare birds.
From the privacy of my room's glass viewing platform, I could watch not only the sunset, but the micro bats and nightjars feeding on moths, attracted to the light. Quite a nocturnal show, but remember to open up your curtains to catch it. Beats counting sheep, as a means to falling asleep.
Food was excellent, with a terrific selection of wines to match.
The lodge's working hub, housing the restaurant, WIFI facilities and reception was spectacular, hewn from raw timber logs in a circular formation, adobe walls, with site and culturally appropriate decor. It took my breath away!
Staff turned on something of a treat, with a guest birthday celebration followed by an extensive performance of traditional songs, drumming and dancing.
Staff were courteous, obliging and highly skilled in the nuances of the hospitality industry.
The head chef met with me to ensure my gluten free needs were well accomodated!
Security staff escorted us to our rooms between dawn and dusk, as buffalo and the odd lion do frequent the lodge grounds by night. Indeed there were buffalo right outside my glass viewing platform. A unique juxtaposition of the natural and built environments!
From Ngorongoro Sopa, it was quite an easy journey, into the unsurpassed proliferation of the World Heritage listed, Ngorongoro crater's amazing array of wildlife. A pride of lions greeted us as we began to descend and that was only the beginning.
So to, our journey to Lake Manyara, with an intimate encounter with a herd of elephants, bathing, feeding, nurturing their babies and surrounding our vehicles.
The stuff I'd dreamed of doing since childhood was finally a reality!
I could have gladly stayed way beyond the two nights I spent at Ngorongoro Sopa. Both the lodge and surrounding National Parks have so much to offer!

We arrived after lunch at Manyare NP, which was lovely and went to the viewpoint overlooking the crater (amazing) before heading on to the Sopa Lodge.
The welocome was great with refreshing cool towels and fruit juice and our bags were taken to our room which was at the far end of the complex, which meant a bit of an up hill climb for meals etc. but meant we got to meet more birds lizards etc. on the way.
The room was big and clean and the only downside was the water, which is the same everywhere in Tanzania and should be drunk, except the bottled stuff.
The view form our room was fanatsti, right across the crater anf there were lots of birds right outside the window most of the time.
The Hotel staff were freindly and the food was both good and plentiful. Nothing is too mmuch trouble for these guys and we woud love to go again.

It's placed on the top of the crater:
You will enjoy the views, the sunset, the sunrise...
As well the bar and the staff.
Well equipped, perhaps it is too big, but in any case the restaurant has a good offer

This lodge has a lovely spacious lobby with lots of seating inside and out all overlooking the pool and the Ngorongoro Crater. Free wifi in the lobby area. Rooms are throughout the property and are spacious and have lovely large showers although hot water is limited to specific hours. Fabulous food in the restaurant although the wine was expensive.

We stayed for 1 night at Sopa and it was one of my favourite accommodations in Tanzania. It overlooks the crater and you get stunning views from the dining room. The rooms were very large and clean. The shower was amazing, with hot water provided by generator power. Keep in mind hot showers are only available certain times of the day. They also provided hot water bottles at turn down service which was nice. The pool looked gorgeous, though we unfortunately didn't have time to enjoy it.

The food was excellent. They have a huge buffet, both for breakfast and for dinner. Everything tasted fresh, and there was lots to choose from. The lodge is big, and the dining room was full for both meals we were there. They have free wi-fi access is the commons area. Service was good, although a bit slow in the dining room.

Overall, a good stay and a great location.

We had 2 nights here & could not fault anything. Not 4 star but everything worked, the rooms were huge, bathroom very clean with good hot water.
The food was very acceptable considering the numbers they were catering for. We found the staff very helpful & efficient. Our teenage grand daughters fell in love with Freddie -- charming, helpful & a fabulous smile.
I would have no hesitation in returning in the future.
In terms of safari's Samburu & Masi Mara in Kenya are considerably better I think & it is a real shame that Tanzanian roads & airports are abysmal. Watch out for the current racket of demanding $US 50 departure tax at Zanzibar airport when it is included in the price of most tickets. Both checkin & immigration tried it on us but fortunately I had confirmed its inclusion in our ticket.

The lodge consists of older structures, which we starting somewhat to show their age. For example, the handle on the faucet in our bathroom was loose, and one of the towel racks fell apart when the towel was pulled on. In addition, the mattresses in our room (had 2 queen beds) were both very hard, and not the most comfortable. It did seem that the shower had recently been renovated, so they may be in the process of updating things.

However, the main reason for choosing this hotel is for the location, as it is about 5 minutes away from the less busy gate to the crater. Because of this, we were a little disappointed that they were rather disorganized in the morning; we were ready to leave to be at the gate for the 6AM opening, but were 15-20 minutes delayed waiting for supplies from the hotel.

Dinners were quite good, treated somewhat like a cruise ship with our own assigned table and waiter for each night. I have to mention the job performed by Godlove, our waiter, who was simply awesome! Dinner one night was a buffet, the other service with a couple of choices. Nothing extraordinary, but certainly more than good enough to satisfy us.

The lodge is located at quite an elevation, so it does get quite cool at night. The hot water bottles in the beds were thus a nice bonus. We could feel the decreased oxygen just walking from our room to the dining area/lobby. Our room was in the 20's - we didn't have much of a crater view, as far as we could tell the best views were in the higher numbers (can't 100% guarantee that though, just extrapolating based on what we could see).

Room Tip: - Ask for a room near the lobby if you think the low oxygen will be an issue as you can definitely f...
