Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 30, 2013

We recently went on a safari to Tanzania and Kenya with Micato Safaris! Micatoa was everything expected and more! Our first Tanzanian trip was to the Nogorongoro Crater and it was incrediblel! The Sopa Lodge was bright, airy, friendly and perched high on the rim of the crater. Food was tremendous. Our 2 sons (18 & 19) were more than satisfied by the endless bacon, sausage, omelets, pancakes etc.It is the perfect beginning for a long day of safari. Dinner was just as delicious. Our rooms were quite comfortable and well appointed. All rooms have a view. This was a wonderful place to stay.......this is a peaceful place.....

Room Tip: All rooms seemed well located and still private.

Situated on the ridge of crater, great view .
It's cold here in morning & night.
Very clean , common areas very nice, wifi good. Has pool but too cold!
Room is average no thrills apart from a hot water bottle at night.
Staff are ok not as good as Serengeti sopa.
Food was ala carte 1 night / buffet next , was okay what was on offer. U won't get a raw chicken here , it's dry as hell!!! The rest of food was okay , Waiters are all over the place but chef helped me out with allergies.
It was ok but could be much better !

this is the 2nd Sopa lodge we stayed, with the wonderful impression of the previous stay in Sopa, Ngorongoro Sopa is a bit out of expectation.

we had an bad expereience on dinning. after the dinner ordered, the starter arrived within 1 min, rest of the dinner was served in rush, all dishes were finished in less than 45 mins.
with the expereince we had in Serengeti Sopa, there's coffee/tea served after dinner, although there's no such option on the Ngorongoro Sopa menu, i requested from the waitress, but she declined and asked us to serve ourselves at the coffee bar in the lobby.
the most interesting part is, tables surround us are having tea pots on their tables.

there's performance by the kitchen staff around 9pm, when we were enjoying and recording, the waitress came to our table and asked us to give them back the table since there's guests waiting for our table (at 9pm???!). there's 2 empty tables at same size just next to us!
of course she interupted our entertainment and the recording.

others are great, wonderful view, clean room, foods were great too.

a bit freezing after sunset, we found warm water bags were prepared insdie our bed, it's a very sweet arrangement.

The crater view is breathtaking and, if you can, be poolside for an incredible sunset photo-op.
The drive to the lodge is quite the climb but will be well worth it when the lookout over the crater enroute is completed. Be attentive for wildlife - we missed the opportunity for a photo of the elusive leopard when driving down - 'he' did not pause long enough while crossing the road right in front of us...the picture in the vegetation obscured 'him'.
As previous reviewers have stated, 'luxury' applies however, to be honest, a little too luxurious for me! The dining felt more like Manhattan than Africa - my preference is the open lodge with a bit more rustic feel. We were fortunate to be treated to a choral group during supper - I was almost mortified that the dinner crowd remained noisy and paid little attention - this boorish behaviour was embarassing to me.
The rooms are spacious with a balconey overlooking the crater although it can be cool especially early/late day. Again, the design is less 'Africana' and more sophisticated. Staff were
attentive and left nothing to chance - absolutely excellent.

Room Tip: Stay in the outer rooms (you will be escorted to and fro so no danger from wildlife) - we were in s...

This was really the best Lodge we have done...but it's a rather long way to get to it. And as you know the Ngorongoro area is so fantastic and nice, certainly stay here for 2 nights (even 3 if you have the time to do 2 days of Ngorongoro). Because...the rooms are really splendid, spacious, with an unique view over the crater, a nice pool an resting terrace, ... The restaurant has a menu at lunch served at the table (not a buffet for once, waaaw!). But the buffet is also very good at night... Here you can dream away in the evening with a drink on the terrace about everything you have seen "down there"... Only little remark : the shower of our room was a little "muffy" because of a lack of ventilation, but nothing that could really matter for us...

Room Tip: Ask for a room near to the main building or the pool, and even if possible at the right side of the...

The perfect way to end your day: Take a dip in the pool overlooking the Ngorongoro crater. Stunning! This is a very good hotel with nice rooms and a very good bar overlooking the area. The food is ok, but you don't go here because of the food. You go here because of the nature. And that they have plenty of.

The Sopa Lodges are luxury places and should be reviewed as such. We were not disappointed :) The rooms are very spacious and each one has a fantastic view into the Ngorogoro crater. This magnificent view is also enjoyed at the pool and from the restaurant and the bar. Luxury is in every corner at Sopa – just enjoy it. But it comes at a price (!) – the place is not cheap. And the location is a bit out of the normal route. It is a one hour detour to get to Sopa, but once there one can decend directly into the crater.
It is preferable to stay on the upper floor of the luxury cabins. Staying on the lower floor can be noisy if those ustairs move around. Also: Staff need to pay attention to details. In a place like this one does not expect our neighbors wakeup call at 6 am.
Dinner as well as breakfast were superb. Especially the grilled meat was good. Entertainment at dinner was also a plus.
One comment: We were low on cash and requested if they could supply cash on a Visa or MasterCard. They declined. Other hotels in Tanzania have offered this service (at a 5% surcharge).

Room Tip: Recommend upper suites - a bit better view and not as exposed to potential neighbour noise.
