“Great value and views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

The lodge is right on the rim of the crater with a great view in. Our room had a glass enclosed balcony with rocking chairs. The furnishings are basic but very comfortable. The food at the buffet was good for breakfast and dinner, with Swahili and international options. The boxed lunch had great variety. The pool looked nice but we did not have time to try it. The limited times for hot water was not a problem, I doubt anyone is at the hotel showering in the middle of the day. It is colder here due to altitude so bring something warm.

After taking small groups on safari, I always make this our last stop. IT is a wonderful place to finish. Really nice big rooms, wonderful views from the rooms, bar and lobby area. It is relaxing to sit in your glass enclosed balcony and look at the animals below (mostly with binoculars), enjoy a dip in the pool before enjoying a great meal with local entertainment in the dining hall.

Room Tip: They are all good

You are greeted with towels and fruit juice on arrival. The entrance lobby slopes down so you can see across the swimming pool and out across the crater. On one side is the Crater Bar with huge central fireplace and wooden carved beams and on the other the luxuriously furnished restaurant with high pointed wooden ceiling. Outside are seats under a canopy. A steep slope leads down to the circular thatched rooms – mine was on the ground floor. There was an antechamber with fridge and wardrobe. The room was huge with two king size beds and beyond that a solarium with bamboo rocking chairs for sitting in and looking over a gently sloping hillside dotted with trees then going steeply down to the completely flat plain in the bottom of the crater. I had an eland grazing outside one morning. The bathroom was also large with a walk-in shower. Supplies included tissues, hairdryer, face cloths, hand/body lotion, shower gel, soap, shampoo, a shower hat but only one bottle of water (I was travelling alone). Items are replenished. There are no mosquito nets here as it is too cold/high for mosquitoes. There was an umbrella stand but no umbrella which I could have used. Its very peaceful lying on the pool loungers were drinks are served. The water in the pool is extremely cold (do not jump in, its too cold) and swimming is hard due to the altitude of 7800 ft. Towels are provided. Afternoon tea is provided in the lobby including scones with jam and cream and an assortment of biscuits. If you leave the biscuits outside unguarded they will be taken by the monkeys. There were dozens of swifts flying around and also several black kites. Unfortunately due to thunderstorms we didn’t get to see a sunset. The hotel has three generators and gets it water from a bore hole and local springs. Hot water is provided from 5-8 morning and evening. In the bar they were serving spicy chicken wings as well as nuts and crisps. The chairs were so comfy in the restaurant we didn’t really want to move. The waiters were all wearing what looked like blue pajamas with small square hats. Each evening there was a lot of singing of Jambo Bwana and Hakuna Matata with the waiters carrying in flaming torches. Dinner was buffet on the first night and served on the second. Breakfast is buffet. Buffalo and elephant come in the night here so you are escorted back to your room after dinner, if necessary with an umbrella. There was a tartan covered hot water bottle in the bed which already had two blankets, on the second night I did find it quite nice. You do need a jacket for an early morning game drive but not really necessary at the Lodge. Picnic lunch was quite good but after a couple of days of Sopa picnic lunches you might want to try the vegetarian option for a change. In Sopa hotels you have to sign for drinks purchased which is rather time consuming in itself and you have to remember to pay at reception before leaving which again took a long time. Great location, as it is so close to the park gate we managed to get a lie in here! Would love to go back.

The lodge is on the edge of the crater. Our room was very large and although slightly dated it was very clean and comfortable. The view from the enclosed balcony was wonderful. The food was very good and the service generally good too. The lodge is large and busy but we enjoyed it very much. The sunset was wonderful

Room Tip: SOme of the rooms are quite a way from the dining area and downhill. This could be a problem for so...

Upon driving up to Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, you will be met with smiling staff holding trays of fruit juice. The main lobby and dining area are beautifully and comfortably decorated. The pool looks out over the Crater, offering perfect views of the sunset as you sip a cocktail on the patio.
Each room feels completely private and is large and luxurious.
The food is usually served buffet style - so it is plentiful and also delicious, with lots of choices. Do not miss the chocolate/ginger bread pudding - it was a highlight of Tanzania!

Room Tip: The rooms can be a bit of a walk from the main lobby, so if that is a problem, be sure to request a...

Loved staying here. Our room had a view of the whole crater with rocking chairs at floor to ceiling glass enclosed balcony. The room was huge, super clean, and comfortable. The dining room was 5 star service and great food. Service here was exceptional. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the crater with balcony on second level are best and closets to the pool and dining roo...

The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is a jewel on the Eastern Rim. It has beautiful cottages with breath taking views. I had seen somewhere on the web that Room 58 has the best view and so asked them if they could give us that and they gave us 59 which also had a panoramic view of the crater. It was uplifting to sit on the rocking chair on the patio watching the sunrise and the sunset that lit up the entire crater. The rooms are spacious and neatly maintained. The Boma styled exterior of the cottages and the garden pathway to the lobby are beautiful. The swimming pool with the view of the crater is unbeatable. The dinner and the breakfast is well organized and you do not feel the crowd though there are a lot of people dining along with you. We opted for vegetarian menu and we got what we requested. The reception staff are very pleasant. In all it is a property I would recommend to friends and family.

Room Tip: Opt for the rooms 58 or 59 for a beautiful view of the crater and the sunset.
