We (family of 4p) have visited Ndutu Lodge among 6 other lodges/tented camps during our 11 days safari (with safisafaris) and consider this the best. The restaurant/bar area is very pleasant and all perssonel is very friendly and capable (things we sometimes missed at other lodges). We stayed for 1 night and had a good dinner and breakfast. The rooms are good, charging batteries has to be done in the restaurant but this is normal for lodges that use solar power. Internet is available (used our own netbook). We hope to return here for some days in February (201x) when the Wildebeast get there calfs and predators have an easy life.

While we were at Ndutu in April, the wildebeest migration was in full swing all around us. We had great success on game drives seeing lions, cheetahs, giraffes, hyenas, flamingos, and countless wildebeest/zebra. So, in that sense, it was the perfect location. The room was clean and comfortable, but small and lacking any particular charm or character. Food is generally good quality, served in a large dining room. This is probably a great place for families, but it's not your romantic couples get-away.

Ndutu Lodge overall is a nice place to stay but there are some disappointments with the rooms. The rooms are laid out along a path in blocks, some are 3 rooms in a block, others are 2 & some are single stand alone rooms. The individual rooms appear to be all the same.

Positives:

As with a lot of Tanzania Hotels the staff here are very efficient & friendly, nothing seems to be too much trouble. This is particularly so in the Restaurant & Bar.

The food really is exceptionally good. The Restaurant is spacious & comfortable, the waiting staff speedy & thoughtful. The meals are wonderfully tasty & very well presented – we did not expect such a high standard. The Bar is spacious & there are many sofas’s to relax on spaced out along the walls. The Genet cats that they feed each evening are very cute as they look down at you from the rafters. They are only in an area between the Bar & Restaurant & will not worry you as you sit in the Restaurant eating your meal.

The location of the Lodge is very good & the property is mature with a lot of trees & views right into the distance. I understand animals quite often roam free on the grounds, we did not see any.

Negatives:

The rooms are OK but have seen their best days & would benefit with being modernised, they are very clean though. They are somewhat dark inside, especially in the bathrooms.

The mattresses on the small beds are hopelessly thin as are the pillows & neither of us slept well here. We heard several other people making similar comments to each other.

Outside the rooms the built in concrete seats and the floor of the porch is painted a scoria red colour. Do not put any bags down on this that you do not want this colour to come off on. We discovered after our trip on our return home it could be scrubbed off but realised about it early enough to not sit down on one of the seats, thank goodness!

The water is desalinated & is truly horrible & slimy. You gave up trying to wash the feel of it from your skin. It also smelt horrid. This is not Ndutu’s fault as this is the only water available save trucking in water difficult to obtain in such a dry country.

Despite the negatives we would stay here again because of the location & a lack of alternate places to stay nearby and that food is really good.

Although Ndutu Lodge isn't as plush and fancy as some of the other safari lodges, what it lacks in luxury it more than makes up for in quality food. We opted for vegetarian the first night as they were serving beef and the staff remembered our preference for the duration of the trip. The vegetarian meals were truly a treat and one night I counted over nine different kinds of veggies in my meal - it was fab. I enjoyed chattiing with other guests in the lounge area and the proximity to the park.

Ndutu Lodge advertises itself as a lodge with tonnes of character, great food and charming atmosphere. In fact it's in a ok location, the rooms are pretty basic (the most basic we stayed in during a week's safari, in five different lodges), the food is average at best and the staff - on the night we stayed there - weren't exactly falling over themselves to help us out. For example, having already killed a couple of mosquitoes in our room, we went to ask the staff if we could have a mosquito net (bizarrely, none was provided in the room - the only place we stayed which didn't have one) only to be told that there weren't any mosquitoes and they didn't have nets. And that was that.

The food was incredibly average, and in the dining room we were seated with a much older Dutch couple we'd never met before, and were expected to share all the food dishes with strangers. When we asked for our own dish of vegetables, the waiter was less than charming in his response.

Ndutu Lodge isn't a terrible place, but it is hugely over-priced (if you're going to charge European rates of $350pn, you need to live up to European standards. If it had been a $100 a night lodge, I wouldn't have felt quite so let down). As it is, it's just a basic room, with a bad shower of nasty-smelling water, less than average food, and staff who get annoyed if you ask anything of them.

Ndutu Lodge was absolutely magical!
We stayed there for two nights, and witnessed some great animal activity in the area.
The staff were friendly and the rooms felt a bit more like home than the lodges we had visited previously.
One morning we got up to se the sunrise (and we had a very early gamedrive) it which is quite exquisite, and even more so when a large male elephant decided to break a tree really close to the mainhouse into pieces - WHAT a way to start the day. Apparently it is quite normal.. Just not for visitors.

Eating a Ndutu was so much better than what we had experienced on our trip. Dinner felt like a real family dinner, it was served at the table - the staff was very attentive!
We booked lunch at Ndutu one day, but were late because of a cheetah sighting, but they had everything ready for us and it was like the rest a wonderfull meal!!

All in all, a wonderful location, wonderful staff, wonderful atmosphere - and definetly the best hotel/lodge we stayed at during our safari!!!

Beautiful place and location, very friendly staff, nice and interesting manager.
Would recommend 100%.
We were then end of Nov 2008, saw plenty of wildebeest, zebras and birds. We had to drive to inside the Serengeti park to see cheetahs.
Loved it.
