Gorgeous! Otherworldly! We arrived at the airstrip and were whisked off the the lodge by Joseph, who would be our ranger for our stay. The drive from the airstrip to the lodge was long, but beautiful. It was quite misty and foggy, which obstructed the views as we made our way along. We were greeted by staff members singing. Very cool. The manager welcomed us and gave us a tour of the North Camp. Our room (house?) was spectacular. As others have mentioned, great bed and bedding, awesome views, outrageous bathroom. The highlight was the fire in the fireplace. It was a bit chilly and this was an elegant touch. The food was excellent, every meal thoughtful, delicious and elegant. The one game drive was very good, yet different for all others. It took a while to get down into the crater, about an hour or so. While cloudy at the start, the skies opened and the crater floor was alive with activity. After having game drives with no other vehicles in sight, having scores or other vehicles around felt a bit like the Animal Kingdom at Disney. This is a Crater issue and not Crater Lodge. If this is going to be your ONLY safari experience, you might be disappointed. While we saw a great number of animals, mostly it was seeing them at a distance. On ending, a lovely lunch was packed for us and we had a nice drive back to the airstrip. I loved how green everything was considering this was winter.

So please take this review with a grain of salt.

Pros:
1) Lodging: The rooms are quite stately and very, very elegant. Starting with the bed, it is a king with some of the softest linen you will find in Africa. The rooms are built out of warm colored wood, which makes you just want to curl up and relax with a book. The bathrooms are quite fancy with four footed bathtubs that overlook the crater. The bathrooms are private though, so don't worry about people seeing in. The finishing touches on the room are well thought out and very much add to the ambiance of being on a first class safari.

2) Dining area: the view from the dining area is unrivaled. You have an unobstructed view of the crater. You are too high up to see animals, but the landscape is breath taking. I could have sat there for hours.

3) Food: very very tasty but heavy handed. The food is healthy and well done, I just felt overstuffed at every meal, which is probably somewhat my fault.

4) Close access to the crater: you can get in and out of the park within 30 minutes, which is key for photography. This allows you to take advantage of the best lighting without violating park rules.

Cons:
1) The service at the hotel is almost too good. People are constantly waiting on you. I must say, the staff are lovely and warm. I just felt kind of stupid having my every need catered to. I think some people want to be treated like royalty. That is just not my cup of tea, no pun intended.

2) The lodge is almost too nice. I have gone on safari now 5 times. I enjoy being out in the bush and particularly enjoy feeling like I am enjoying nature. The lodge is clearly 5 star, which creates a certain distance between you and the bush. This is further accentuated by the volume of cars in the Crater. The Crater is flat and open, so cars collect around animals very quickly. This creates a feeling like you are in a zoo.

All in all, the lodge is very very nice. If you like extreme luxury then this place is for you. If you prefer the feeling of being in the bush and more woven into nature then this hotel lacks that often important feeling.
