We had heard about the beauty of the area, and there are only 3 hotels on the crater rim. Our agent recommended the Serena. They could only accomodate us for 2 of the 3 nights required, so third night was spent in the Sopa (see other review) Serena was OK, but the decor was a bit dated. No atmosphere in the bar. Rooms adequate, no mini bar or room service available. Dining room one big noisy (read : very noisy) cafeteria like room.
It was OK, but with the location they have the potential to make it really special which it wasnt.
Saying that I would visit again (although Sopa as first choice) due to the stunning scenery. It is a trek from Arusha (4 hours by road), but well worth it. (There is an airstrip there but I understand it can get fogged it quite often) Dont do it if you do not like steep/narrow roads as the hotels on the rim are pretty high up.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. ... more less
