Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence

Very nice an clean rooms - friendly and helpful staff - a gigantic view into the crater - sunsets to see from your own little Terrace - very very good food ( different to the other Serena s ) clean air ( watch out, it may become chilly at night )- great bathroom with big shower - what else do you want ?

You dont have to stay at the more luxurious Crater Lodge for more money and the same view.

Here you ll have everything you ll need waiting for a trip into the crater. We just stayed one night but we would stay again.

Room Tip: All rooms face the Crater !

Location: great view of the crater. This is what really makes this hotel - without it I would never consider it.

Food: food, which was buffet, was a big problem. Big problems with our stomachs.

Room: small room, but a balcony overlooking the crater. Good safe in the room.

Staff: fairly nice. People didn't seem to really enjoy their jobs. Individual tipping.

This is a place to which we will probably not come back.

Perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater this property is AMAZING. There are more expensive places to stay here but, really, why would you bother? All rooms have views over the ever-changing crater. You may be looking at the clouds below you, take a shower, and come back to see the lake reflecting the clouds in the skies. The staff are amazing! Having "done" The Serengeti it was an amazing contrast to stay her for a few nights...because of the altitude, night time temperatures are cooler and the open fire places are beautiful. On two afternoons I had tea / Kilimanjaro Beer in the lounge in the afternoons after a game drive in the crater while my partner had a nap...perfect! Restaurant is beautiful.

Room Tip: Try for the second floor. Although all the rooms would have a great view, if you have mobility issu...

If you aren't looking to rough it while in Africa with 200 or so other safari-goers, this is the place for you. Hair dryer, robes, 24 hour electricity, free 24/7 wifi in your room, safe, shampoo, lotion, and water are all provided.
Going in we were briefed on any extra charges such as laundry, drinks (soda and liquor), room service as well as the workings of the property... So there were no surprises.
The staff is very friendly and accomodating.. The food is good and varied. Mostly buffet style.
Nightly entertainment pre-dinner is entertaining.
The room and bathroom is clean and spacious.. Private patio overlooks the crater which is awesome! Don't be surprised if your wake up call is buffalo grazing near your patio.
The property definitely has a cruise-ship feel and does lack the intimacy of the smaller lodges.. The large groups and families seemed to be having a great time as did we.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper room for a better view of the crater

Wonderful view of the crater from our room, which I enjoyed from our private balcony while wearing my Ngorongoro Serena Lodge robe and slippers. A Maasai tribe came to dance the night we stayed there, which was a nice treat. I understand where people are coming from when they talk about slow and lackluster service because it was definitely not the best. It's not enough to not stay there, because the rooms are nice and the views are spectacular, but know going in that it's not going to be 5-star service and leave plenty of time in the morning before your game drive for breakfast!

This is a beautiful lodge on the edge of the NG crater. The views of the crater from the lodge are outstanding. Special care has been made to have this property blend in aesthetically with its surroundings. The room was spacious and clean. We stayed for two nights, and enjoyed this property very much. The only issue we had was that while their were extensive choices at breakfast and dinner, generally this food was rather bland. And although the desserts all looked great, most of the choices tasted dry. My technique was to try a small sample of each of the items, and then go back for seconds of the winning items. The service was not particularly friendly either with regards to the dining room.

We stayed at five Serenas during our 12 day Kenya/Tanzania safari, and this one was the most impressive. Perched atop the crater rim, the views from every room are jaw dropping.

The lodge supplies entertainment each night before evening meal service and also provided a class in cooking local cuisine. The food was nothing special, but it was certainly satisfactory and service was always pleasant and available.

In the heat of the African summer, it was also the only hotel that didn't need air conditioning.

Room Tip: Every room is good

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. ... more   less
