Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 16, 2013

This lodge located on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater offers stunning views of the crater (Caldera?). We stayed here for two nights. The check-in process was painless. We got the upper level rooms we had requested. The view from our balcony was breathtaking! I must have taken dozens of pictures of the sunset from our balcony.
The rooms and the hotel itself looks and feels dated. However the rooms are comfortable and clean (they even had a safe in our room). The bar/lounge area is very nice. Entire one side of the area is glass, offering a great view of the crater. The food (breakfast, lunch/picnic lunch/dinner and tea/coffee throughout the day) was good. Enough choice for different tastes. Although the service was good, it lacked the intimacy of the Serena Lodge at Lake Manyara. This is a much bigger lodge with many more guests at any time.
The entertainment in the evening (Masai dance and live music) was a nice touch.
The wi-fi is pretty good in the lounge area.
The location of this lodge trumps everything else-absolutely wonderful.

Room Tip: Upper level rooms are nice and quiet.

We spent 2 nights with 2 couples here as we visited the Crater. The staff is pleasant (in fact we never met a disagreeable Tanzanian in 2 weeks of travel) and they handle the meals well with a combo of ordered hot food and buffet. Food was good. Nightly entertainment was a plus. There was nature talk one evening but we didn't stay to hear it as we had an early start into the crater the next morning. The rooms are dated as others have said but I expected worse. Just freshening up and replacing the bedspreads would help but all in all, it is a fine location. This was part of a package so I have no idea if it was a good value or not.We stayed in 2 other Serena properties- Zanzibar was wonderful, a luxury small hotel, and in Arusha (Mountain Lodge) was fine too.

The Ngorongoro Serena Lodge is a fantastic property with a perfect location along the edge of the Ngorongoro crater, 2000 feet above the crater floor. The rooms all have balconies and look out over the crater, and you can hear the zebras and wildebeests down below. The view of the sunrise from room 39 was spectacular. The room was good sized, with a king-sized bed, and very large bathroom. The service was great, and the food was good as well. If you are visiting the Ngorongoro crater, this lodge is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Request a 2nd story room for a better view. You will have to climb stairs, and there are no elevato...

The hotel has a great location inside the park and an easy drive to get started down into the crater, first thing in the morning. It also had a spacious room and very polite and courteous service. However, the shower pressure first night was almost non existent (they fixed it the next day) but most disappointing was the food. We stayed at 6 different places in Tanzania and just after we left my wife had intestinal issues. We met up with two different couples at subsequent camps who also had stayed here and they each got sick as well. As such, I would recommend staying someplace else, even outside the park, when visiting Ngorogoro Crater.

Great location, friendly staff. Rooms okay but in need of an update. Food was good though the choice was limited probably due to the location. Surprised there was not more of a local flavor with the food though I guess they are trying to be neutral for visitors. Access to the crater and the animals was first rate. We would definitely return if we get the chance.

We stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights in December 2012 at the end of our safari. The hotel is well located on the rim of the crater, the rooms are comfortable and the food is good. The trouble is that having stayed at other Serena hotels, which were every bit as good, this one is just too big for this location. It is impossible for the staff to treat people as individuals because the place is too busy. Because the rooms are spread out, if you are at the far end of a wing, you can end up with quite a walk to the restaurant/bar and reception area's. In the evening the restaurant and bar get quite hectic because everybody has to congregate there around the same time. In the morning there is a constant stream people in reception and a traffic jam of safari vehicles outside the main entrance. In a nutshell, location, food and room are all good, but the overcrowding is just too much (and we were there in the so called 'quiet time of year').

Great location of this property as you look out your window or from your back deck and you're right on the Crater. Saw a beautiful sunrise. Rustic stone feel to the lodge. Great bar area where you overlook the crater. Dinner was upstairs and was quite good, and a lot of choice for breakfast. I could have easily stayed here another night. Internet service available in the bar and lobby.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. ... more   less
