“Luxury!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 31, 2013

If you want luxury on your safari, this is the place. The "rooms" are suites with a living room, 2 fireplaces and a huge balcony that overlooks the mountains. The food is gourmet - very impressed with breakfast, especially. Recommend getting a massage in the Spa- reasonably priced and the women are very experienced. Our only complaint is that it was too cold in the main lodge in the evenings for comfortable dining. July is winter time and the Ngorongoro area can have temperatures as low as 40 F at night. For some reason, the staff keep the doors open, which makes eating dinner a very cold experience. Even after asking them to close the doors, they kept being reopened.

If you are planning a trip to the Ngorogoro Crater and are seeking a luxury lodge, look no further. This place has it all and then some. I have stayed at many famed luxury safari lodges, and this was my favorite in all of Africa. In addition to all its other advantages, it is only a year and a half old. So there is no peeling paint or disrepair. The resort has all the advantages of newness and none of a newcomer's downside.
When you arrive, the all female team of friendly porters will take your luggage. They escort you to the main lodge area, which is a polished wood closed area with a drink and coffee bar and dining area.
In the waiting area are coffee table books about safaris in Tanzania.
The grounds of the lodge have floral resemble the English countryside, with a view of the lush, green mountainous Ngorogoro Crater wall giving an Alpine feel to this paradise. The entire lodge is spotless.
The grounds are magnificent and include a pool with a stunning mountain view of the Crater Wall and the feel is of lush greenery with flowers. It is a stunning and very serene setting.
The lodge cottages are luxurious and spacious. There is a living room with fireplace, couches, work desk, multiple appliances. The wi fi access is very good, even better at the main lodge. The furniture is comfortable and tasteful. The walk in bathroom has a rainforest style shower with stone furnishings. The spa products are luxurious. The towels are excellent. The laundry service was excellent but was an additional a la carte charge. The beds, complete with mosquito netting and hot water bottles at night were very comfortable. The only complaint was that the extra blanket in the wicker basket at the foot of the bed smelled of moth balls a bit.
The bedroom and living room were immaculate and unusually large---like a very large one bedroom apartment. There was coffee and tea service in the room, and gas faux fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom.
There was a balcony out the back of the lodge with a very spacious covered outdoor deck with a paradise view of the Crater Wall. It reminded me of the Alpine views I have seen in Bhutan and Aspen, Colorado. The occasional sound of hyenas in the distance at night, served to remind us that we were very much in Africa.
The dining experience was above and beyond. We had choices of steak, fish, pasta, and chicken dishes. The menu was European Continental, with a local African choice added daily. My favorites were the steak (the cattle is grass fed Masai beef--delicious) and pastries. The cuisine was what you would expect in a fine restaurant, with a rare miss. The breakfast was wonderful with waffles, croissants, pancakes, eggs any style cooked to order as well as more healthful low calorie choices. When we went for a game drive that included breakfast and lunch in the bush, we were very impressed with the exceptional quality of the box lunches. They packaged waffles and eggs in a way that they retained much of their appeal.
The excellent cuisine was a big topic of delighted conversation among the guests.
In addition, the staff were delightful. They were at once friendly and professional.
There were families with grandparents and children and couples (like us) on a romantic getaway that were all talking about how thrilled they were with the place.
A tip--get an early start on the safari, even if it means eating breakfast in the crater. Some of the best sightings we had were first thing in the morning--black rhinos, porcupine, a battle where a pack of hyenas chased lions off their wildebeest kills, a failed hunt by lions on Cape Buffalo, a lion couple mating--were all morning sightings.
The Exploreans lodge is located very close to the entrance to the Ngorogoro Crater reserve, and the drive is spectacular. It is cool on top and gets warmer as you get closer to the Crater floor--so dress in layers.
The Ngorogoro Crater has a high concentration of wildlife and no tse tse flies and moderate temperatures--some advantages over the Serengeti.
We could not recommend this wonderful lodge more strongly.

Room Tip: Ask for lodge 20 if you don't mind a climb up and down some steep steps, as this lodge is very p...

On our recent Micato Safaris trip through Tanzania and Kenya we had the absolute pleasure of staying in the Exploreans Lodge. It was the most luxurious and welcoming of all our accommodations. We were in awe of the sumptuous accommodations, delicious cuisine and lovely staff. Thank you to Mr. Stanley and his amazing employees for an unforgettable time at the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater.

We recently stayed 2 nights at the Exploreans. It started with a nice greeting and professional orientation on our arrival. The staff was always available and attentive to our needs, and looked great in their uniforms. The Units were large and comfortable and came with a pillow menu which we did not need since the pillows supplied were top quality. The grounds of the Exploreans are beautiful with flowering trees and bushes, aromatic lavender borders and a large garden area were vegetable are grown for inclusion in the meals. The food was 5* quality with generous portions and plenty of options. Our family is comprised of 14 people age 80 to 8 ranged from finicky to vegetarian to meat lovers. Everyone was pleased with the meals. The only very minor nit was the pool temp. The Manager did explain 2 of the 6 solar heating cells were out for repair and apologized. So if you are going to Ngorongoro creator to experience the views, wildlife and local masai culture. I would recommend you look at the Exploreans as a place to stay.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are wonderful. They are large and include additional sleeping areas so you might be...

We were lucky enough to be upgraded here from another lodge, and we could not believe how fabulous it was. Our room was one of the best I have ever stayed in, looking over the jungle, every little detail thought of (including hot water bottles in our bed!), superb service, great food. Even our early morning wake up call was softened when it was accompanied by the delivery of hot coffee and hot milk. Heaven.

A comfortable break from the camps, but not as authentic. It's new so everything is in beautiful condition, well maintained. (I agree with the "almost sterile' review below.) Service, especially in the dining room, was outstanding. Great location. We had good reason to not stay in any of the lodges in the park, and this is an excellent alternative. It is so close, you don't waste any time getting to the crater. Rooms are huge, and one of the few times I've had the mini-bar drinks included ! I wished that the windows or patio doors had screens. The evening temperature was lovely for open windows, but couldn't do that for fear of bugs. Dining room food was excellent, and had options influenced by local cuisine, which was nice. Very good wines. We didn't care for the picnic lunch menu, which was high on starch, cold noodles, and mayonnaise. They were very well intentioned, but had great difficulty understanding our request for variation.

This place is a must stay!! My family and I (a group of 8) stayed in 3 hotels/lodges and this was the best hotel on safari - the service and grounds make this place the first place I would recommend. The grounds are beautiful! Everything is so well maintained and perfect landscaping. The view isn't directly of the crater, but there is only one lodge that is and i'm sure that it cannot be nicer then this one. The view is absolutely beautiful though of the lush mountaintops surrounding the top of the crater. Its located minutes outside the park gates, so when your done with your safari you are not too far (although everything takes a long time in Africa), and then they are waiting for you with warm wash cloths and fresh juices. Each cottage is over the top. They are equipped with fireplaces, giant bathrooms with warm showers, a balcony with a great view no matter where you are, living room area with desk and another bed if needed. The service is what made this lodge the most memorable experience. The manager, Stanley, amongst every other employee is very welcoming and eager to help you in any way possible. The manager introduced himself to every guest at the hotel and made it his personal duty to make sure you were comfortable and that you felt welcome. There are people at every corner to make sure you are taken care of and they urge you to take advantage of the amenities they provide like room service, wifi, hot water bottles in your bed, a pillow menu (with everything from lavender pillows to down pillows), all inclusive food and alcohol - all of which are free of charge. There are amenities more i'm failing to mention, but everywhere they can provide you something or comfort you in any way possible they are there. Additional massage service and laundry are available at an affordable rate compared to local areas. The food is great as well and they encourage you to order every course which change every day. The lunch boxes they send you with on your safari days were by far the best that we had compared to the 3 other hotels that provided our lunches. There are so many details you can't describe, but not one detail they fail to miss. Absolute great time!

Room Tip: All Rooms have a view, All-Inclusive option is a must
