“ideal location to ngorongoro crater”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

its a new place, 5 minutes away from the gates to ngorongoro crater.
the lodges are comfortable with spacious bedroom plus a living room and a huge balcony. Food was good....dinner as well as breakfast. Service was efficient. Its the next best option if you dont want to stay on the crater rim but still want to be close to the crater for the morning descent into the crater. Thank goodness we didnt stay in one of the lodges at Karatu village..... its way out. There is a swimming pool here however you have to pay to use the sauna and the hot tub, which was disappointing. their spa is medicore.

What a place to stay! A beautiful place with all five star amenities and friendly staff. The cottages are spacious and are set up in beautiful surroundings. The gardens are immaculate and views are fantastic. The lodge manager Stanely attends to all your needs with a smile and the chef Prabakaran whips up great meals of your choice. The food was fantastic and so were the wines. After staying in multiple luxury lodges in east Africa we were really impressed with the accommodations, food and service at Explorean. We would love to go back.

Room Tip: All cottages are good and have great view.

A group of us stayed here for two nights, and we really liked it. The best part was the food. The chef is amazing, and created the most incredible, varied food: he made traditional Indian food for my father, and a perfect steak (one of the best I have ever eaten) for me. He has obviously come from a background of very high end hotels. The alcohol in the all inclusive range was also very good.

The location of the property is outside the Ngorongoro Conservation area which means that it's a bit of a drive to the crater, and you miss out on the early morning drives that are possible if you stay within the conservation area. Having said that, given how lovely the hotel is, I'd say it's worth that.

The rooms are huge - they are suites, in fact. They are very comfortable, but just slightly soulless. The bathroom could do with better lighting, better placement of things like the hairdryer and doing away with scented tissues, but to be honest, these are minor details that don't take away from how nice the rooms are.

The service was very good, if a little too slow for a hotel at this level. It is a new lodge, so I would hope that within a few years, the service will all be seamless. The staff definitely have the right approach, and clearly wanted us to enjoy our stay.

The pool is quite nice, but it took until the second day of our stay before it was heated to a degree that was comfortable which was slightly disappointing. It was still lovely to spend time reading in the sun on the loungers. :-)

I have not given this property a five star rating because I think there is room for improvement. I have no doubt that over time, they will reach this standard. I would happily return to this lodge, and I definitely recommend it. Keep up the good work, Mr Stanley and team. We hope to return very soon!

This place is an Oasis! It is located about a km from the gate to the Ngorongora Crater. The grounds are immaculately maintained. Hedges of lavender line the paths. Smells so good. The staff greet you with a warm smile, a cool towel, and a cold drink. So refreshing after a dusty game drive. The restaurant is suppled daily with fresh vegetables grown on site. Chef Kumar has an amazing culinary background. The meals are ala carte and delicious! By far, the best meals on our Safari. Cappuccino machine. The rooms are spotless clean, large and beautifully decorated. A mosquito net covers the bed. Never saw a mosquito. We sat on our deck and watched the sun set. What a beautiful end our Safari. Many thanks to Stanley Morley, the Manager, for the great job he has done with this property.

Room Tip: All cottage locations are excellent. The lower tier would give a more of an unobstructed view of the...

When we arrived in Tanzania, our tour operator's representative told us that there was a slight change to our itinerary. Oh no, we thought...what has gone wrong. Well in fact what happened was things went extremely right as we were bumped from our original hotel, the Serena Ngorongoro Lodge to Exploreans. I was a bit uneasy about our stay at the Serena Lodge because it had not gotten very good reviews recently. But luckily they "bumped" us and we landed at Exploreans-- a mini paradise. The rooms are exquisite with beautiful accessories, comfortable beds, very spacious, and wonderful views. The food in the restaurant is well prepared and beautifully presented as befits a lodge of this caliber. There are a lot of trainee staff right now so their skills need some seasoning but the smiles are genuine and the desire to please evident. As has been mentioned before, it is an all-inclusive place. We didn't order anything special drinks-wise but the house red wine was excellent. And I must mention the beautiful chandelier and pendant lights in the restaurant and lounge. I think they might have been Italian glass from Murano although I couldn't get a definitive answer to my query about them. Anyway, they were very pretty. If we weren't so far away, I would definitely return. I will certainly recommend Exploreans to friends.

If you're on safari in Tanzania, you have to go to the Ngorongoro Crater and this is such a magnificent place just outside the park gates. The individual cottages have wonderful two-sided fireplaces that keep you nice and toasty at the nearly 6,000 ft. elevation. The service from the staff was well above anywhere else we stayed in Tanzania and food was on par with the best of the West.

Room Tip: The cottages are spread across several elevations, ask for one on the lower levels. That way you ha...

we stayed as a family at this lodge in July 2012. I cannot thank the staff, the manager, and the Indian chef for their extremely high service and hospitality. The rooms were excellent and had some beautiful artefacts in it, which made the facilities very superior. The bed was comfortable, and the balcony to die for. The views were great. in short a very wonderful experience and I would recommend this hotel to all. After a long day at the crater, this was a welcome experience to come back to. the only regret that our stay was too short.

Room Tip: all rooms are great.
