Simply gorgeous

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 25, 2012
This is another Elewana property and the place just oozes grace and charm. From the first glimpse as you approach it you know that it will be something special. In Cape Dutch style architecture, this gorgeous manor house is set in a coffee plantation, with manicured, fragrant gardens. The style of the resort must be designed to maximize privacy because you feel like you are the only couple there.
We arrived late in the afternoon to be met on the front lawn by Martin and Jani who served us home made lemonade and canapes. Nothing was ever too much trouble to them for the whole of our stay. Martin even sent through to our next accommodation some recommendations for places to visit in Zanzibar, which were also great.
After our arrival Lucas, our butler showed us to our cottage, which was huge, very private with a balcony and a courtyard and pristinely clean where we were served with pre dinner drinks.
We had our first dinner in the main dining room and the food, service and ambiance were all exceptional, in fact better than most restaurants.
The breakfast the next morning was delicious ( there is an enormous choice also ) and we then went on our game drive, taking with us a fantastic lunch that was envied by many other travelers.
Getting back that afternoon we were hot and tired, but found that while we were having a gin and tonic by the pool, Lucas had run a bath run for us, filled it with rose petals and bubble bath and had placed a chilled bottle of wine beside it. That night Lucas set us a table in the pool pavilion and the food again was exceptional.
The next day was Valentine's Day and Lucas arranged for us to have eggs benedict in our private courtyard. Heaven.
It really does not get much better than this and I agree that The Manor really is "bucket list" material. We have stayed in many hotels all over the world and this is possibly the best place of all.
Every traveler should stay here at least once in their life.

We arrived close to sunset at the Manor House in Karatu. We didn’t know what to expect, as our trip had been so amazing and this was our last night of the safari. When we got there it took our breath away as we were not expecting such a beautiful property. The property was amazing with horse stables, a wonderful pool, and open areas everywhere. Set on a coffee plantation, the views were amazing. The property had a wine cellar, a billiard room, a movie room, a bar room, and outdoor areas to sit and eat. Our room was fantastic. It had a private deck overlooking the plantation, a private yard, a living area with fireplace, a beautiful bedroom area, and an amazing shower. There was a bottle of champagne waiting for us, and our laundry was taken and done for us that night.

Peter was the person who made our stay here the most amazing. He prepared everything for us, including a private dinner in the wine cellar. He had picked flowers to create a "Congratulations" on the table, set in front of a fire place, which he also started for us. It was so beautiful The dinner was amazing, the drinks and wine were stupendous, and the staff sang and brought us a special cake baked for our anniversary. Again we were in tears at the amazing treatment that we received. We were overwhelmed with the way we were treated, and have only wonderful things to say about the Manor House, and Peter who was from Karatu. The next day it was time to leave, so we were given our box lunches, and sadly said goodbye to the staff.

The gift shop sells the coffee beans from their plantation and some other unique gifts that we had not seen at elsewhere.

We planned our safari through &Beyond, and their Ngorongoro Crater Lodge was full for our dates there, so they recommended we stay at The Manor - what a great recomendation! The hotel is beautiful and peaceful - it used to be the manor of the coffee plantation. The plantation still exists but the house is now a hotel. The rooms are HUGE and very comfortable and the staff is wonderful - excellent service. We got Shariff as our butler and he made sure we were always comfortable, with a drink in our hand or a snack - he is a great person, very professional and sweet. I would recommend you stay a day longer than you planned just to stay at the hotel, enjoy the pool, go horse-back ridinging, grab a book and sit by the fireplace with a gin and tonic in hand... hmmm!!!

The hotel is not inside the Ngorongoro Crater National Park, but it is just 15 minutes away by car. The road from the main road to the hotel is a bit rough (especially if it has been raining), but it makes it an even better adventure. Their jeeps are OK (not as fantastic as the jeeps of &Beyond), but our guide was excellent - very friendly (John), and we met other guides who were great as well.

Perfect in everyway. Delicious food, wonderful friendly staff, beautifully appointed lodges, we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights here, wished we had stayed for longer. Worth swapping something in the crater for this tranquil oasis, even if it is a bit further from the crater itself :)

My husband and I stayed at the Manor as part of a package with Elewana Safari (highly recommended), and it was truly an experience of a life time. From the very warm and personal greeting when we arrived, to a royal send-off with all staff waving good-bye at our departure, we couldn't have been more impressed. The cottages were comfort at it's best. Large windows looking out at the coffee plantation, huge beautiful bathroom with clawfoot soaking tub, private patios(2), cozy sitting area with coffee and tea, AND a hot water bottle in your bed at night! No detail is overlooked. The property managers make every guest feel as though they are the most special people there. I went on an amazing horseback ride, around the extensive property one morning, and I can't even begin to describe how beautiful the flowers and trees were with the mist rising above the neat rows of coffee. The food was wonderful and the staff will be remembered always. If you get a chance to include this property on safari, or if you just go to enjoy the property alone and include a drive into the Ngorongoro Crater (there is a landing strip nearby; you can get a plane from Arusha) you will not be disappointed. It's a bucket list kind of place.

We had the excellent fortune of staying at The Manor for the first two days of our safari vacation in Tanzania. We are seasoned travelers who have stayed in numerous hotels all over the world, but the experience we had at The Manor now stands at the pinnacle of our lodging experiences. From the instant we arrived, we were treated like cherished friends by the entire warm and welcoming staff. (Very special thanks go out to Justin, Benedict, and Rodgers!) Our suite was outstanding with every comfort and luxury attended to (the huge rain shower and hot water bottles in the bed at turn down are highlights), and the food, service, beautiful grounds, and meticulous attention to detail were all outstanding. We cannot sing the praises of The Manor and its fabulous Tanzanian staff enough and are sincerely hoping we will be able to return one day.
