I stayed at the Impala for 3 nights following a Kilimanjaro climb and Safari in early March 2013. The hotel was booked through the Safari company and we did ask if there were more budget options but we were warned that the standard of accommodation in Moshi is lower than in neighbouring Arusha.
The Impala provided a comfortable stay. The room, while a little dated, was clean with comfortable beds and good, hot water - something that was a treat after 2 weeks camping in Tanzania! The lobby and halls were clean as well and the restaurant had ample outdoor seating. There were daily power outages while we were in Moshi and this impacted the availability of WiFi and certain food items on the menu. No fault of the Impala on those issues.
I found the food at the restaurant to be quite good. Service was slow, however, but we found this to be common when traveling in East Africa. You need to ask for your bill when you want it...don't wait or you will be there all night :-) We didn't use the pool while there, although it was always busy and did look inviting.
The front desk staff were helpful and the hotels driver was fun and got us where we needed to go. We were quite disappointed when the Impala double booked our room for one night when we had booked 4 in advance. We only found out through the Safari company when they contacted the Impala to book an airport transfer for us. They booked us into their sister hotel, the Kitole, for the one night instead. They did provide a transfer there (it was only a minute away) and kept our larger luggage in storage so we did not have to move it back and forth. The Kitole hotel is not near the same standard as the Impala and we were very disappointed when we arrived there. We were told there was a restaurant (nope) and the first room they took us to had a broken bed and leaking toilet (all over the flow). The second room was more appropriate but tiny and very (very) outdated. In speaking with some folks at the Kitole, it may be under new management soon so this could change, but if the Impala suggests you stay there, I would think twice.
All in all, it was a clean place to stay in Moshi and I would stay there again. Considering the location, it was what we needed!
