We enjoyed our stay very much at Honey Badger! The loved it so much that we extended our stay. It is the best place that we stayed in Tanzania. The team is very friendly and the rooms are very comfortable :) They have a nice pool as well. And the most important thing is that they contribute heavily to the local community! We visited the school that they contribute and had the chanse to meet all the lovely children that they are trying to give a second chanse. We would like to stay there again if we ever visit Moshi.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write a review about Honey Badger. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and that you got a chance to visit the school. The students and teachers enjoyed meeting you and find such visits motivating and educational. We enjoy it when our guests take time to see what we are working on and who were are supporting. We welcome you back to the lodge and to visit out projects whenever you can. You can keep following out work and that of the school via our website and the facebook pages.
Thank you again,

We only stayed in this lodge because they claimed to have wifi, but on arrival were told that a password could not be provided until the following morning, when we should pay for 24 hour access, ie when we were leaving...

The restaurant only had very limited meals available. The rooms were cold because the windows were just holes in the wall, and there weren't enough blankets.

The lodge is close to a bar which played loud music until early in the morning.

Wouldn't stay here again.

Dear Guest,
We are sorry that you did not have a good experience at our lodge. As you can see from other reviews this is unusual. It is unfortunate that you were not granted access to our wifi due to the fact that we the system requires us to add you to the network which can only be done during working hours. We are working on this and soon hope to have unlimited access in our rooms. Although this would obviously have to be reflected in our prices, which are currently very reasonable as many other visitors have agreed.

We are sorry that you did not mention anything about how cold you felt in the rooms as we would have been able to do something to address this. We could have provided you with additional blankets to those that were already available in the room. However it is obviously too late for that. Just for the sake of explaining our windows are mosquito netted and grilled, this provides excellent ventilation and helps to keep our rooms cool throughout the year, where temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees. July is the only cool month in Moshi, and for this reason we do provide blankets in the rooms.

We thank you for your candid comments

My wife and I stayed here with a friend of ours during our stay in Moshi and were extremely happy with the service. There was a small snafu with our room as there were ants in the bed, but this Africa and the place is a little off the beaten path so this was not a huge surprise. What was nice was that the owner Joseph was more than accommodating in correcting the issue and getting our things moved to a new room. The service here was phenomenal! We stayed in 4 different hotels while in Tanzania, and the service at the Honey Badger was by far and away the best. The food is amazing with a fresh menu daily! We ate breakfast with monkeys jabbering in the trees around us, which was pretty cool. The menu was a unique blend of Indian, Tanzanian with a little American/Euro blend tossed in. I loved the foliage all over the property, especially the banana trees around the dinning area. The pool looked very welcoming, and there were a few people swimming, but the water was a little too cold for me. We also did a one day safari to Arusha wildlife park through the HB and were more than happy with the experience. The staff did a good job of setting expectations that for the time and location we may not see much in the way of large animals, but we were very lucky and saw tons of giraffes, flamingos, deer, zebra, multiple kinds of monkeys and stared face to face with an elephant from about 20ft away! The vehicle was clean and comfortable for the bumpy ride, and the guide Hans was awesome, I highly recommend you request him if booking a safari through the hotel. There was a little cleaning and construction going on in the outside spaces, so I am a little bummed that we didn't get to see everything in its glory. The only issue we had was the water pressure and heat in the shower was hit or miss, but that was due to the weather as they use solar panels to charge the water heater. I really liked the communal and environmental responsibility this hotel takes, it was one of the reasons I chose this place over others in Moshi and I was more than happy with our stay and would recommend the Honey Badger to anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer rooms, as the older ones are a little dingy and dated.

We stayed at the Honey Badger for a total of 7 nights (pre and post our Kilimanjaro climb) and loved every second of our stay. You will be hard pressed to find hosts more friendly, warm and helpful than Jenny and Joey. Similarly, their staff are incredibly keen to please and we felt like we were amongst friends for the duration of our stay. The rooms are spacious and clean, the grounds are very well maintained and they have a fantastic pool area with plenty of sun lounges. Meal servings are very generous - the food was delicious. We are keen to return to Tanzania and when we do, we'll return to the Honey Badger and also organise our safari through them. Thanks for a great stay and see you again.

Thank you for your review and your warm and kind comments about the Lodge. We very much enjoyed having you here to stay and felt, in a very short time, that we had known you both for ages. The staff still ask after you and hope you are making plans to return next year. We are looking forward to organising your safari and to enjoy your bar expertise just one more time.

All the very best

We stayed at HoneyBadger for part of our honeymoon in May and we'll definitely be back. The room, facilities and staff exceeded our expectations. We had a beautiful room which had been decorated with flowers for our arrival. When not out on safari or local day trips we enjoyed being able to relax around the quiet pool with a drink. All the staff were friendly and really helpful and made sure we had a fantastic time. Honey Badger organised a brilliant safari for us with a friendly and very knowledgeable guide who made sure we didnt miss a thing.
Thanks for making our honeymoon so special and we will definitely be back for another visit.

Wow! What a place. That's what runs through your head as you walk into Honey Badger. And the thought doesn't go away.
Our room was amazing. You got the feeling that everything in the room had been made within 50 miles of the building. It was just so authentically African. Loved it.
The electricity was on and off in an amusing Tanzanian way, which affected the water heating, and consequently the water pressure was up and down, which provided a very authentic African experience. But for the most part the showers were hot and strong, just the way I like them, and the solar power made sure we were never in the dark.
The pool and the surroundings were cool and immaculate, monkeys running along the walls and in the trees, with the pool shower in the middle of a clump of banana trees being a fantastically creative idea. The wifi worked at that time only around the office, but with a relaxing lounge area to surf in, whilst watching the huge tortoise wandering around the lawns. Loved it.
Meals were always great, and the cook was very flexible (and easily embarassed by compliments!). The staff were always cool and happy and enjoying their work, which they did without fault. Always busy, but never in a hurry in that very African way, which set a chilled and loungey tone to the place.
Night times were fascinatingly odd, with the appearance of maasai warriors at every gate and external door, complete with long spears and sticks. Always polite and wishing you good evening every time you passed in the darkness, but you got the sense you were camped out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by things that want to eat you. They made you feel very safe. Loved that.
For the Alpine mountaineers reading this, Honey Badger proved the impossible is always achieveable. We arrived in Moshi with our heads full of stories of the rip-off Kilimanjaro trekking companies that insist that you cannot climb Kilimanjaro in alpine style, or without a guide and half a dozen porters. But we arrived determined to use only a single guide and no porters and do it Alpine style. Joseph (Joey) and I had a talk through what we wanted to do, and he didn't try to stick us with a package at all. He called in Lazaro, a genuinely brilliant mountaineer, person and all-round good guy.
In short, we did it. No porters. Lazaro as our guide. Eight days and we were up and down. Lazaro carried nothing of ours, and we carried nothing of his. He was completely self-contained. Let me repeat that: Lazaro soloed Kilimanjaro with a full pack! Whilst we walked as an independent pair. I cannot overstate how cool and amazing the whole expereince was. Far removed from the horror stories we had heard. Our "expedition" carried the name of the Honey Badger as the tour company to comply with regulations, and Lazaro worked for Joey as his guide, not ours, officially. But we paid Lazaro directly and paid the park fees ourselves at the gate with Lazaro's brilliant help. He was a god.
You cannot get around the Park requirement to use a guide. We accepted that. And Lazaro was indespensible as he played the role of fixer, smoothing the way, getting past all the bureaucracy and getting favours from the park wardens and hut staff. But Lazaro did not try to interfere with our experience of the mountain as mountaineers at all. He was there when we needed him but he was also making sure we get plenty of privacy. He was just fabulous. Joey took almost nothing from the whole show, and was a gent in dealing with the organisation Absolutely brilliant.
Indeed, throughout our stay, Joey and Jenny were golden. We had loads of problems and issues not related to Honey Badger, and they spent way too much time helping us with everything. So much appreciated.
It goes without saying that our experience of Honey Badger was overall out of this world. For a mountaineer, this place is a palace, and we took full advantage of our time there to be treated like royalty. Sipping cold drinks by the pool in this green oasis after climbing Kili was such a deserved luxury! More importantly, as a trekking company, they tried to work with us to get the most out of our time in Africa and were willing to try new unusual ways. Kilimanjaro 2012. Alpine style. Loved it.

Thank you for your fabulously detailed review, not just of the lodge (and we loved the enthusiasm you put into each sentence) but also of your unique independent mountain climb. Joseph and I are always happy to help people travel the way they want to travel. We want people to experience their own Africa and not have to march the well trodden paths. We were therefore all too happy to help you out. We do stress however that what you did was not for the faint hearted and remain impressed by your achievements to this date. We would love for you to share some of your photos with us and do keep us posted on your future travels.
Warmest regards and Honegera sana tena (congratulations again)

The lodge is set close to 1Km down a rough road off the Arusha-Moshi-Dar Es Salaam road with a spectacular view of Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Meru on a clear day. The frontage gives a Misleading first impression of the lodge and can do with a facelift. Once inside you get a refreshing experience with very professional handling by proprietors Joseph and Jenny complemented by very polite, friedly and welcomimg Staff. Johari became the daring of our group. We felt more like friends than clients during our stay. Joseph and Jenny introduced to us a self entertaining game one of the evenings which made our evening. A repeat match is still on the card.
The rooms are clean spacious with hot water available at all times heated by solar power.
The lodge has a lovely swimming pool which is kept very clean and is surrounded by many sun beds and bandas to relax and enjoy the service from the Resturant/bar next to the pool. Evenings are abit boring for youngsters as there is no music.
Breakfast was delicious but the main meals did not live to our expectations.

Thank you for taking time to review the lodge. We very much enjoyed hosting your group last Christmas. It was our first Christmas with the whole site open and your large group helped us to fill it with fun and laughter for the whole Christmas week. Thank you for your comments, we certainly take those on board, we continue to work with the local government to improve the road access to the lodge, we are unlikely to get tarmac but have now levelled the road so it is completely accessible all year round. We are glad you enjoyed the food at the lodge, especially the traditional goat barbecue and games night that we arranged for your group. We know this was very much enjoyed and a highlight of your trip. We have passed on your kind words to Johari (our Bar and restaurant manager), she enjoyed hosting your group and joins us in warmly welcoming you back.
Warm regards
