“Heaven on earth!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2011

Hands down, one of the nicest resorts I have ever stayed at. Joey and Jenny are the sweetest people and are SO welcoming. The food is outstanding, the accommodation was excellent, the pool was breathtaking...what more can I say? The staff is so kind and everyone makes you feel right at home. If you are traveling to Tanzania and are staying in Moshi to climb Kili or take a safari, STAY HERE! You can't go wrong!

Joey & Jenny couldn't be more welcoming hosts. The staff are friendly and the service is great. We spent 2 weeks at the lodge and were sad to head home. The lodge grounds are beautiful providing a very relaxing atmosphere. They have a WIDE range of activities available to allow you to see all of the culture & beauty of Tanzania. If you're making your way through Moshi, this lodge is where you absolutely must stay - I promise you won't regret it!!

I'm a bit reluctant to review this place, because I would love to keep it secret, but that wouldn't be fair so here goes......

The Lodge has a variety of different types of accommodation - ranging from a lovely little camping area through to the 'executive en suite' rooms. These rooms are basic, but very well appointed and spotless and I would highly recommend them for anyone on a limited budget. The beds are large, very comfortable and have excellent well fitting mosquito nets. They also have a little covered verandah with seating which gives some outdoor space.

The recent addition of the beautiful swimming pool and restaurant/bar has really turned this place into one for relaxing and winding down - after a dusty safari, a Kili climb, or just a busy week...... it is a perfect size, has plenty of seating around it and numerous bandas for those wanting shade, in a lovely well maintained garden. It does get busy at the weekends with local ex-pats who come down for an afternoon swim, but for me, that did not detract from the experience - and this is standard practice for most of the hotels in this area.

A real strength of this place is the friendliness of the owners and the employees - Jenny and Joseph treat you as a friend rather than a guest, and they have obviously trained their employees, who all come from the local area, to do likewise. I recently paid a return visit and they all remembered me by name. The Lodge is very much part of the community rather than exclusive from it and it is really good to be able to see the community and environmental projects that are taking place around the Lodge.

The food choices are limited but there is a reasonable snack menu during the day and a set three course meal in the evening. You need to let them know if you are a vegetarian - because its not evident from the menu board, but they will accommodate you. So DO ask! The breakfasts are very good!

The Lodge is about 6kms from the town of Moshi, which is a small non descript place, but worth a visit - I find shopping for souvenirs etc to be MUCH less of a hassle there than in nearby Arusha.

The views of Kili from just outside the grounds (and I would highly recommend taking the time out to go for a walk around the area) are superb if the weather is clear - the mountain often remains shrouded in cloud, but when it emerges - it is truely stunning!

I have stayed at Honey Badger three times now and will hopefully stay many times more - it is excellent value for money and a great place to go to get away from it all!

Thanks very much to Joseph and Jenny and all the staff.

Room Tip: I would definitely pay the small amount extra for the executive rooms.

We stayed at the Honey badger lodge when we arrived in Tanzania. It was the perfect place to acclimatize! After our trekking/safari we came back because we liked it so much. All the positive echos we heard were true! The big attraction of the hotel is without any doubt the pool area; wonderful to relax here after the dust and noise of Moshi or Arusha! The food was simply delicious, the rooms were big, nice and clean, very kind people, Jenny and Joseph, the owners were the most helpful people we met,…For us it was more than perfect! Moreover, Honey badger Lodge helps the community actively via the adjacent school and involves the local people. Your money is well-spend!

We would without any doubt return here! If you are in the Moshi-area, you should do too!

We stayed at Honey Badger Lodge two days before and one day after we climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. It was perfect! The owners, Joseph and Jenny, made everything so easy for us... kept our luggage while we were on the mountain (including a laptop locked safely away in their offices), helped us arrange airport transfers, bus transfers and were wonderfully warm and hospitable. The rooms are cool and clean, the food is amazing and there is a delicious (and pristinely maintained) pool to take the stress away. The room we stayed in had a great shower with hot water (solar-powered) and good water pressure, the beds had mosquito nets and clean white linens. If you are anywhere near the Moshi area, it is worth it to make the effort to stay here. Not only is it a haven for travellers, but Honey Badger Lodge offers "community-minded" tourism which means that your stay at the lodge helps to support the community, the adjacent school, and if you book a tour through them (they plan Kili treks too) you can be sure that everyone involved is being treated well and earning a fair wage. I would absolutely recommend this lodge!

Room Tip: There were three of us travelling together, we got room 12 with one double and one single bed on the...

stayed at the honey badger for 3days, it was a pleasent stay, the staff was excellent, warm and friendly. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Got some really good advice about travelling around moshi from Joey and Moses. They arrange tours as well. Went on the Forest tour which was really nice, saw a hundred plus year old tree, creppy animals and rice paddles. Breakfast is basic, but if you need anything extra they cater to your needs at an extra cost. Pleasant place to stay if you are looking for some peace and quite away from the city. Would definitely recommend it.

We really enjoyed having you to stay and glad you had a good time at the lodge and on the tours. The forest is a special place for us, and we are always happy when our guests enjoy it as much as we do. We really hope you will come back one day and stay for longer. All the best Joey

PS we are making changes to our breakfasts in 2012, so you don't have to worry about them being basic!!!

My girlfriend and I stayed here by recommendation from a friend. The lodge is beautiful, with clean rooms, a pool and located in a remote area which is great as it gets you away from the hustle and bustle of East Africa. The eating arrangements are very social and the food was very good and authentic. Everyone eats from a set menu together in the evenings which is a great way to meet other people and for everyone to share their experiences and also exchange details of other great places along the way.

We did a number of day trips through Honey Badger and they were all good. However, the safari was just amazing. We did the five day four night safari to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, camping. Camping is such a great experience, listening to the animals sniffing around your tent in the middle of the night, and then seeing the look of shear panic on your girlfriends face is just priceless. The safaris are private so we had our own driver and chef. The driver lost interest every now and again but I suppose anyone would working the number of hours a day they do. The chef was incredible, always food ready and waiting for us, always more food than you can eat and of good quality. Showers are not great at all in the campsites so if you are a princess then perhaps look at lodges.

Jenny also helped us book our forward transport which was most helpful, along with any of our other needs. She sat with us at the bar a couple of nights for a drink and it was very interesting to hear about the work and projects she was doing.

I would highly recommend Honey Badger to everyone. Foolishly we did not climb Mount Khilimanjaro but I suppose that gives us another reason to go back ;o)

Happy travels!

Thank you for choosing us for your Tanzanian adventure. We are glad you had a good time and that you enjoyed your safari. You didn't tell us enough stories about the 'look on your girlfriends face' during your camping trip!!! perhaps when you are back next time we can continue the tales!! We look forward to you coming back to scale the mighty mountain!
