We spent 10 days in a beach hotel in Mafia Marine NP, and did several snorkeling trips, one whale-shark trip and plenty of paddling around the mangroves. We felt we only scratched the surface of this amazing place. About 400 species of fish and nearly 50 corals are found here, and we spent hours floating in paradise in the clear waters of the Coral Gardens and the nearby little rocky islets.
I would have given 5 stars, but nothing is perfect. Having spent $400 on park fees, we were a little disappointed to see a Parks boat, supposedly on a mission to control crown-of-thorns starfish, sending down divers who were turning over coral and collecting lobsters in a prime tourist area. Keep an eye on these guys and keep them honest! The Park staff on the whole deserve much credit for the degree of protection they have achieved.
