We spent Christmas with our family in breathtaking Gondwana - the best Christmas present we could have wished for!
From the moment we arrived through the Game Reserve gates and were greeted with the sight of a herd of rare Cape African Zebra, we knew this was going to be special. Our luxury thatched lodge was very spaciously laid out with unbelievable views from the wrap-around decking onto the vast plains and mountains beyond, beautifully furnished and huge bathrooms and walk-in showers, with all the little extras of toiletries, robes and slippers.
For our Christmas Eve dinner we were given a warm welcome with complimentary sherries around the reception's fire, and met up with other guests who had just completed an evening game drive. The food was exceptional and the staff were charming.
The following morning just as dawn was breaking, we were collected from our lodge by Nadia, a first class guide with an amazing knowledge of all the animals, insects and fynbos. We were extremely fortunate to have Nadia and the jeep all to ourselves - our own private safari! We were treated to sights of more Cape Zebra, boks of all varieties, and the wonderful elephants - the bull was so close he wanted to charge, but with Nadia's calming patience, he realised we weren't going to do his family any harm, and they set off back into the bush - an amazing sight to witness first hand and so incredibly close.
After a good 3 hours of game drive, Nadia brought us back to the main lodge where we sat outside and had a fabulous breakfast, all laid out on linen cloths and with a view to die for.
Christmas Day champagne pre-prandials on the decking with great attention from Robert, made it all the more perfect.
Our evening game drive was just as good - we saw the Black Rhino and the hippo this time, and we stopped half way for sundowners and delicious nibbles [ including fresh cherries wrapped in bacon ] in a tranquil setting. Bliss. Sadly with the lions having made a kill just before we arrived, they remained elusive for this visit.
Nadia also managed to take us to the best vantage point to see the sun set over Gondwana at the end of our drive prior to yet another wonderfully prepared dinner. It was a magical ending to a perfect Christmas.
Nothing was too much trouble for the welcoming staff, who certainly made the experience that extra bit special - our grateful thanks to you all for making this a holiday we will never forget. We would love to return one day.

We stayed 2 nights here in Jan 2011. The place is beautiful, and the staff were brilliant. The game reserve is still very young so this did not compare with previous experience in terms of the animals. Don't be put off, but just don't go with the wrong expectations. In a year or two this will be brilliant... especially when the rangers actually get their gun licenses! Yes, that is slightly worrying. Gondwana is an easy drive from Cape Town and, as one writer mentioned, accessed from the N2 passing a particularly monstrous refinery (I think), but that is left well behind as you approach the reserve. I saw one comment on here about the quality and quantity of the food... I think he must have been in a different place altogether, we loved it.

We had the fortune to stay 2 nights at Gondwana and had a wonderful experience
The reserve was beautiful with fabulous attention to detail from the entrance lodge onwards (do not be put off by the turn off from the N2 which is a little industrial but actually miles away!)
The staff were welcoming and attentive every little detail was covered we felt valued.
We stayed in a Kwena Hut which was simply fabulous, spacious and beautifully furnished in an ethnic style.. A huge comfy bed with fabulous views of the reserve huge bathroom with a deep bath again overlooking the reserve and a seperate 'raindrop' shower. There was a wood burning stove where we would find a thermos of hot chocolate on our return from dinner-lovely! We had a large terrace to sit and enjoy the peace and views of a drinking hole. There was also a very refreshing pool with loungers
We had 4 game drives and as this is a free roaming reserve there are no gaurantees of what you will see but we saw loads! Our guide Forget was so knowledgeable and determined we should see and understand what was surrounding us even explaining the stars and planets one night on our return! We saw elands, gemsbok, kudu, red hartebeeste, zebra, elephants, baboons, blue cranes, secretary birds, black eagle on our first drives, in between being served a bush breakfast and later sundowners with nibbles simply fabulous. For our last drive we elected for an early start well worth it! Forget found us the lion pride and we sat spellbound a few metres away as the three lioness tracked some gemsbok with the lion following watching intently it was simply amazing-could it get any better-well yes he then found us the cheetah who had just made a kill almost impossible to see even up close it made us realise the skill the rangers possess! So we sat spellbound watching before returning for breakfast.
The food and drink were wonderful whatever meal where ever we ate it!
If you want a special time with magical memories in a place where they care for your every need then choose Gondwana - we will go back it was worth every penny!

With our kids visiting from North America, we had a limited time to show as much of Africa as we could. Unfortunately I had booked soo many things in advance, that we only had one night to spare for Gondwana- however it was a memorable one.
We booked a private thatched villa, which was beyond spacious...with wonderfully decorated rooms, massive bathroom facilities for each of the 4 bedrooms, a lovely great room to visit and a kitchen with all the accessories we required. Unfortunately the weather had turned a little chilly, so the fireplace was put to good use and appreciated.
We had a lovely family evening, a very peaceful sleep with little sound or connection to any bit of civilization and awoke promptly to join our guide for the morning.
Forget was a terrific guide, who shared his vast knowledge of the bush in a very entertaining manner. He expertly tracked some elusive lions, and did his utmost to show us all that Gondwana possessed. We all had a terrific time.
Our kids have now returned home, but they and we still have fond memories of our time at Gondwana. My husband and I hope to sneak in another game drive when we are in the Mossel Bay area with friends in February!!

The rooms werent cleaned properly during the day and we kept skidding on the floor after our showers. We got charged £40 for some laundry. Food was very average and the same menu for lunch for consecutive days. Dinner was miniscule and we were left with rumbling tummies all night.

We had a very warm welcome at Gondwana + introduced to our guide for the period we were staying. We were shown to our rooms, where the bags had already arrived. We stayed in a Kwena hut which was huge with a high domed, thatched ceiling.
We met for iced coffee + cake the set off on our first safari, which lasted 3 hours + was brill!! There were only 2 of us in a long wheelbase jeep with the driver/guide Forget. We flew across the counrtyside looking for lions (unfortunately not to be seen on this occassion), elephants, rhinos, water buffalo and saw them all.
We then stopped in the bush by some Acacia trees + Forget dropped down a shelf on the front on the truck, laid out a table cloth + cooked bacon wrapped round cherries + chicken drumsticks, laid out cakes + Biltong + cracked open the wine/beer/gin/whisky etc. It was bril!! The scenery as the sun was setting was incredible but chilly. When we got back to the camp we were met with a lit firepit + warmed sherry to warm us up. We had to be escorted back as lions roamed around freely. Dinner was good.
An early start (meet 0540) for another 3 hour safari, stopping for rooibos tea/coffee, cakes etc then eventually back for an outdoor breakfast overlooking the hills on tables set with cloths cooked on a bbq by thye chef.
It was all an amazing experience + could not be faulted + made us feel very special.
