“A mixed opinion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 20, 2014 via mobile

Our stay in the rooms were awesome, great room, open shower and bath, comfortable beds and great service from the staff. Thats the great part about it. Obviously Gondwana is a growing lodge, and if you are expecting to see game, you'd be disappointed at this stage, they have 11000 hectares, and i personally dont think or saw they have enough of game for it. Maybe in 5 years time as they will be purchasing game over the next few years. Free roaming lions can eat 3000kg of meat each, and Gondwana has 7 (from What we could tell). They also had sever bad luck in 3 or 4 of their rhinos dying of natural causes. Apparently their rangers also could not tell us the numbers of their animals, they say for poaching reasons, but other lodges had no qualm quoting numbers. They advertise to see the big 5, I'll be honest you'd have to be there a year to get to see them, the ranger that took us has never even seen the leopard they claim To have and we went looking for their buffalo in an enclosure but could not find them. I am a hardened South African from the north, and am not naive as to think you'll see all the animals in 1 go, having lived near the Kruger for all my life, if just never seen so little amount of animals on a paid for game drive before. Gondwana obviously need the funds to grow, so dont miss it on your trip. Experience their growth and enjoy their facilities, their service and i bet in 5 years from now they are going to be THE place to be!

If you want to see wildlife and cannot get to Kruger, then this is the place to go. Just passed Mosselbay, but away from it all, A huge reserve.

We were lucky to see a lioness stalking an Eland, and the lion looking for her soon after. A magnificent beast. Saw plenty antelopes, wildebeest, zebras, also hippos and elephant.

We stayed in a bush villa, great luxury - option to do self-catering if you so wish. We saw a lioness ralaxing near another bush villa... so defnitely no walking about in the reserve.

Our ranger Brian was extremely knowledgeable about the animals and very attentive to us all.
Even though it was a chilly evening with a light drizzle, we were kept warm during the game drive with the pancho's we were supplied with. Lovely touch to have a sundowner on the game drive.

Dinner was great, breakfast fine.
A family trip with my 86 year old father.

We should have been told at the time of booking that the Huts are fully booked and the Guesthouses are far from the Pool/Bar/Reception area, infact far from anything. The Guesthouses are privately owned and more or less in good condition. They have 3 sleeping rooms, we had to move from the first one to the second to find a clean bed without lots of spider webs & insect nests on top of the moscito net. The toilet looked like a cave , alsp had realy bad moild & fungas growing on the wall & the ceiling, really a bad impression for such a high profile establishment as quoted on the Website.
Intresting question ??? who is in charge, managing this place. you see so much staff running around, that is strange and not understandible that there are not enough tables in the restaurant for dinner time . There are enough waiters but still forget the dessert or never around to ask for drinks. and it can happen that they forgett to pick you up at your guesthouse...
The game drive's were nice, but a morning and a evening drive is enough, the ranger knows all the big animals by their name, that shows how much game they have there.
The guesthouse was dirty, poorly managed, ranger nice, game drive good and the food was great ,nice for game drive beginners, not needed to stay longer then 1 or two nights, definately not a five (5*) star set up !!!
only the webside gets a 5* rating

Just a one night stopover with evening and morning game drives, The lovely Mike our Ranger for both drives. This Game Lodge far more like Safari than a zoo like so many others in the Western Cape. You really have to keep your eyes peeled, but the rewards are so worth it. One of the few that have free ranging lions. The Accommodation, food and Staff are all excellent and we shall definitely bringing more visitors for a stay. Only sorry we only had time for one night.

The game reserve was recommended to us.
Excellent setting with friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Good food and wine. Atmosphere truly touchable, yes touchable !
The game numbers need to be increased.
Mike our Ranger was exceptional, full of knowledge. He hopes to aspire to be Sir David Attenborough and deserves to achieve his target.
Two days and 4 game drives gave myself and my wife a great experience.
Mixing with other like minded people at dinner added to the visit.

This game reserve was the icing on the cake for a wonderful trip to South Africa for my son's wedding! It was part of a tour of the Garden Route that was put together for us. The 'huts' were luxurious, the staff friendly and accommodating, the food was great, the views were incredible and our 4 game drives were amazing...blankets included for those early mornings and late afternoons. We saw all the animals we came to see and got lots of great photos. Our guide was full of information...and even provided a wine break on the afternoon drives...with a zebra grazing nearby! It truly was an experience of a lifetime!
