“maybe im biased”
Reviewed May 12, 2014

the elephant rides cost about 9000 rand, and it was short and silly, a lap around a big empty field. Though it was my first elephant ride ever, I didnt think it was memorable. The saddles were uncomfortable and my boyfriend walked away with pretty bad chafing and skin abrasions from the ill fitting seats. Before you think I'm a ranting psycho, we also went to Knysna Elephant Park and had a ball of a time there with the elephants and their rides.
As the guest rooms were full, we couldnt have had the full guest treatment to view its other attractions, I'm sure it would have made my review better otherwise. Quite a shame, but I hope the management will consider upping their game, at least for the elephant aspect.

Dear reviewer

Thanks for your comments but just to correct you the cost is R450 per ride and we do offer guests to option of doing a 30 min ride or an 1 hour ride. The one hour rides is through the forest and probably what you were looking for and the price is a bit higher for this. With regards to the saddles - the saddles are designed and aproved by nature conservation so all properties are supose to use them. The saddles ensure 100% comfort for the elephants and a easy wear so unfortunately it is not a 100% comfortable for the humans riding them (hence the advise for 30 min rides) but our mission is to look after our elephants and ensure their well begin. (saddles is unfortunately in favour of the elephants) All other parks might not use these saddles and would probably be asked to use them very soon.

Hope this helps

“What a wonderful experience”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

We had a game drive and was so lucky to see the rhino's and lots of other wild animals. The highlight was to walk with lions in their territory. Truly amazing!! Four guides are walking with you to make sure that everything is as save as can be. There are lots of time to ask questions and take photos. i would go back tomorrow and have it all over again!

“Not really wild but a lovely place to stay.”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

In January we had a very good 2 night stay here. The champagne on arrival was most welcome.
Being a small game reserve, the animals were used to vehicles and people so, although not truly wild, the advantage was that we were able to get very close to them, including a mother and baby rhino. We saw a good variety of animals including zebra, giraffes, wildebeest, ostriches, kudu etc. though no predatory animals.
They do have some lions kept separately but we were unable to get access to them because of flooding that had damaged the road. They even have lions guests can walk with and elephants guests can ride.
Our guide was knowledgeable, interesting and pleasant.
On the morning drive we had a stop for coffee and snacks, the coffee served with a slug of something similar to Baileys but I forget what it's called.
The afternoon drive was punctuated by a picnic stop with beer, wine, soft drinks and other alcoholic beverages. We did have to quickly get back into the vehicle when a big male rhino got too close for comfort.
Our tented accommodation was quite luxurious with a big double bed, an indoor bath and outdoor shower. It felt very private even though it was close to the main building. The deck had a lovely view of the river and woodland.
The food in the restaurant was excellent, some of it cooked to order in front of us.
All the staff were polite, helpful, friendly and well presented.
If there was not so much of South Africa that we have yet to see, I would happily stay there again.
Perhaps I should have posted this review in the hotels section. There wasn't an option for stays on game reserves

“Elephant experience truly special”
Reviewed April 10, 2014 via mobile

Where else can you ride 40 year old 6 ton bull elephant for one hour through the African bush crossing rivers and climbing hills. A very fun and safe experience that will be unparalleled in your vacation. The Botlierskop reserve was run very well and the experience is well worth the cost. I would opt for the elephant experience as opposed to the shorter half an hour walk.

“Great day out”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

We organised to have an elephant ride in the morning, followed by breakfast and then a 3 hour game drive. I light bite for lunch and then a walk with lions in the afternoon rounded up our day! This was an unbelievable experience. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The day was quite expensive but a once in a lifetime opportunity and worth the extra in the end. I have to agree with some other reviewers that you will not see the animals in 'the wild'. As long as you expect this you will enjoy the visit.
