Botlierskop Private Game Reserve

I really want to like this place, and obviously many people do, but I just feel its a little confused in what its trying to be?
We liked the tented lodges, which really give you the feel of a safari. The antelopes you see by some of the tents are always there and whilst not tame, are used to people.
The staff are lovely and want to please both in the restaurant, spa, game drives and reception.
I have mixed feelings about the 'game meat' being served at dinner. In fact the only warthogs and crocodiles (together with zebra meat and springbok) we saw were on the barbecue! Is this really to be encouraged in a conservancy?
I couldn't help but be disappointed with the animal side of things. Yes, its great to breed endangered Bontibock and Cape Zebras, but the Rhinos, Giraffes, Lions and Elephants are a collection rather than truly wild. That's OK as far as it goes if they are being conserved. But what I felt was missing were the many fascinating and interesting small animals and birds that you expect to find in South Africa, which could have been given an area? Things like the mongoose, the rock dassie, etc. They have built a bird hide by the lake, but as yet its only attracted coots.
So to me, its more like a day visit to a hotel with a zoo than a safari lodge.
Still enjoyable for many though and I'm not knocking it.

Botlierskop, General Manager at Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, responded to this reviewResponded February 18, 2014

Dear Sir

Thank you for your review. Glad you enjoyed the service and our spa. With regards to the mentioning of the dinner... we do offer 7 different meat items on our buffet which does sometimes include Crocodile, Warthog, Springbuck as well as fish, chicken and either beef or lamb for the GUESTS that prefer not to try the unfamiliar meats. Even though we are in conservation in all Game Reserves across the world you will find game meats to eat. It is similar to beef and lamb as they are breed for GUESTS yes but if population grow they follow in the circle of life as we have to conserve the field and plants as well. All game meats are ordered in and nothing are from our own reserve. The rare species such as Black Impala and Golden Wildebeest we conserve. This regards to you’re mentioning about the collection - I am not sure what you meant sorry. Our elephants are used for viewing but we also offer elephant back rides (we do not hide this fact and all guests knows this before visiting) Our lions are in an enclosure which we drive into for viewing - the lions were saved from canned hunting and with us they do have an opportunity to retire in piece - and we are very proud that we could contribute to their survival. The Giraffes and Rhino's are free roaming and as wild as can be although they are used to our vehicles as we do not hunt on the reserve you will be able to view them quite closely. We have de-horned the rhino's due to large amounts of poaching that happens in South Africa and this is the only way of saving them. One of our rhino's was poached 3 years ago - the first in the western cape- and since then none of the others was poached.
Hope this helps with the questions you have about the property. To summarise - We offer guests a Safari Experience close to Cape Town in Luxury - Especially if they do not have time to go all the way to the Kruger park and prefer Malaria free areas

Kind Regards
Botlierskop Management

Botlierskop is a very relaxing experience. I travelled alone and I did the game drives, elephant ride, horseback safari and wonderful cat walk - a must! The luxury tented suite is a fantastic place to relax by the river with your own balcony where you can see animals come to drink.
The bath and outdoor shower are pure luxury. The bush spa was very comfortable and I even had a massage outside amongst the birds. Sylvia the beauty therapist is very good and I felt truly pampered.
Staff are unobtrusive but extremely knowledgeable on wildlife and nature - you can see most animals in two game drives and I liked this without having to drive for hours.

It may not be Kruger but this small private game reserve has really created something very special. We stayed in a "tent" down by the waterhole & viewed black impala & the rare golden wildebeest coming down in the evening. The "tent" boasted a four poster bed together with a beautiful bathroom & air conditioning. Truly glamping in style! The game drives were fantastic with a 4x4 experience built in to it. The staff were really friendly & you get given your own ranger during the stay. The food in the lodge is lovely & you get to savour some very interesting local specialities! To make things easier as the tents can be some distance from the lodge you can be collected in golf carts to move you around. The experiences are truly memories built forever. The preservation work that is going on on the reserve has to be admired. Thank you to everyone for making our three days so wonderful.

Room Tip: The elephant ride and bush walk with the lions is an absolute must. Request a tent by the waterhole...

Great accommodation at a small reserve. Our first time in Africa, will not be our last. It may not be natural habitat and may be small but for our 3 day stay it exceeded our expectations. Facilities are wonderful, food fabulous, game drives tailored to please.

Room Tip: Rooms down a steep hill, a golf cart is there if you need it.

We booked two nights over christmas. From the first email-contact until we left everybody and everything was kind and perfect. We had a lot of questions every one was answered with passion and everything they promised us was done. The location and the view is incredible so is the service. The game drives had been exciting and outstanding with a lot of information. The tents are very luxurious and we loved to sit on the balcony in the evening drinking sherry and to hear all the wild animals. The bath and the two! outside showers are really great. Our girls went with lions and had a ride on an elephant, that was amazing too. Outstanding, thank you for a very nice and unforgettable stay!

We selected Botlierskop based on the recommendations we read here in Trip Advisor. Thank You.
This place is great if you are looking to be pampered while interacting with lot's of African wildlife. We stayed for four nights. The staff engulfed us in hospitality as soon as we arrived. Although we stayed in a tent it was one of the most luxurious accommodations we have ever enjoyed. The food was exceptional and interesting.
We took advantage of everything Botlierskop has to offer: game drives, cat walk, elephant ride, horseback riding, bush walk, spa services etc. We enjoyed every moment we were there.
The best part however is the abundance and variety of wildlife. Elephants, antelope, buffalo, lions, giraffe, rhinos etc. etc.
It is worth the 20 hour of flying and 4 hours of driving to get there.

We originally booked here for the 'walk with lions' and then decided to add a nights stay. We booked a 'tent' which turned out to be quite amazing. (Tents were not like this when I was in the scouts!) A huge double bed (very comfortable) a big roll top bath and an outside shower with hot water! A large deck area to watch the sunset and some complimentary sherry just topped off the experience. We ate at the main lodge and were able to sample ostritch and crocodile meat (interesting) the service was attentive and, surprisingly, the manager was around and expressed an interest in everyone's comfort and pleasure. Well worth a stop if you are travelling in the area.
