Botlierskop Private Game Reserve
Certificate of Excellence

The lodge is wonderful, the bush-tents luxurious, the service excellent and the food outstanding. However, the game viewing is not even in the same league as a place like Kruger and the value isn't great as the rates are expensive.

If you're a tourist that doesn't want to travel far north or a honeymooner that wants to stick to the Garden Route and luxury - this place is great.

We went for a morning game drive at Botlierskop and it was such an incredible place we made a last minute decision to stay the night. Best decision of the whole holiday!

As you'd expect from a place describing itself as luxury, the accommodation is beautiful. Although you get a definite feeling of being in a tent, 'roughing it' doesn't even enter your mind as the tents are so comfortable, the ensuite bathroom is fitted wonderfully and the mini bar is one of the best stocked I've ever seen! This combination of being close to nature yet not having to sacrifice creature comforts is really special.

The game drive was amazing, the scenery is fabulous and often we just couldn't believe our eyes. The guides on the reserve know everything about all the animals there, their history, how their family groups work with each other and much, much more. It is very clear that they see their jobs as a vocation, not just work.

The staff are all extremely helpful and cheerful and all of them believe (rightly so!) that they are very fortunate to be working at Botlierskop. This is a clear testament to the way the place is run, everyone obviously felt very passionate about the reserve regardless of whether they were a guide, an animal handler or one of the service staff.

After warnings about the dangers of monkeys coming into our tent to do a 'Keith Richards' we were diligent about packing our things away every time we left, but ended up disappointed that we didn't encounter these cheeky chaps!!

Overall, I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to stay at Botlierskop and will definitely return when I'm next in South Africa.

Room Tip: I didn't see all the tents as they are very private from each other but would imagine they are a...

Due to time constraints we stayed only one night at Botlierskop but we would've loved to have been there longer - it was one of the best places that we have ever stayed! The safari provided us with an intimate and close up encounter with almost all of the animals on the reserve - especially the lions, giraffes, rhino and zebra.

We were in Lodge #11 which was one of the more secluded luxury tents on the banks of the river (which is also safe for swimming). We were warned about the troublesome monkeys, however, other than a sighting of a couple of monkeys in the trees, we did not have any contact with them, so our complimentary chocolates and sherry remained untampered with! Guests are shuttled around the grounds on electric buggies and allocated a specific host for the duration of their stay.

The staff were very attentive but not intrusive and everything was run like a well-oiled machine. The standard of food at the lodge was excellent and we chose a package that included all meals. The activities that we took part in (4x4 safari game drive, elephant feeding and helicopter ride) were superb and extremely well organised and it is clear that Botlierskop do their best to provide an experience that outperforms other game reserves.

Botlierskop met all of our expectations and we would definitely recommend it as a top class game reserve in South Africa.

OUR TIP: Choose the elephant feeding over an elephant back ride if you are looking for a truly interactive wildlife encounter and don't miss out on an early morning helicopter ride (of at least 20 mins) as a 'birdseye' view of the coastline and surrounding countryside is breathtaking.

Room Tip: The tents located on the bank of the river are the most secluded (e.g. you won't have any guest...

We recently went to visit the Botlierskop Game Reserve for my fiance's Birthday! WOW! This is possibly the best place we have stayed in more than a year! Stunning views, great service, amazing scenery. Well worth a visit. The Helicopter flight over the reserve and ocean is a definite must! Thank you for personal touches, like romantic turn-down and attention to detail.

If you are looking for a real wild safari experience, Botlierskop is not for you. Look for another place.

If you want to bring your kids to see a bunch of wild animals (lions, rhinos, giraffes, buffalos, bulls, zebras, etc.), feed elephants (even ride them), do an helicopter trip, do an horseback safari, watch the elephants eating during a sundowner, eat tremendous food, see amazing landscape, sleep in a huge luxury tent, receive exceptional service by highly trained guides, etc., then, you'll have the trip of your life at Botlierskop!

We won't thank enough Jurgen, our guide, for having make this 3 nights holiday a real blast!

Only negative comment would be that meal service is a little bit unequal. One night you have someone fantastic taking care of you... next day you feel like it would be easier to go and grab your plate or your drink yourself!

It's true that the reserve is not a huge one and because of that, you will see some fences and power lines here and there. But the good thing (at least with kids) is that you don't have to drive hours to see game. They are everywhere!! So they can't get bored. One night, we even had problem to get back to our tent, because the rhinos were sleeping just beside the 'ferry' to cross the river. We also received visit from monkeys one night when we were dining. They came in the tent (even if is was well closed) and took the chocolates... even tried to open a bottle of Port!... and left a little "souvenir" in the bath! We called reception and somebody came quickly to wash the bath and bring back chocolates for the kids. A real bush experience!

If you are bringing kids on a safari or you don't want to spend hours of drive to find game, Botlierskop is the place for you.

Room Tip: The 4 tents located the other side of the river are very seclusive and require a small golf cart rid...

Dec 21 We drove part of the garden route to visit a private game reserve Botlierskop. The scenery and open land is awesome. Even though it was a four hour drive from Cape Town, it didn’t seem that long. We were met at the car by Richard our guide. He took care of everything from there. Started off with a welcome drink, lunch, then a game drive. Saw giraffes, elephants, impalas, and many other animals. I can’t even name them all. Had a sundowner with the elephants. I didn’t know how I would like sleeping in a tent but it was awesome. Of course, it is not your typical tent. It had a big bed, bathtub, outdoor shower. It was a wonderful experience. I was hoping to see the monkeys but didn’t. Ate dinner and they served all type of game. My husband loved the zebra. I liked it but liked steak better.
Dec 22 Did a game safari at 6:00 in the morning. Saw all kinds of animals. Got up close to a lot of them. Got to have hot chocolate with the rhinos. From there, we went on a lion drive. That was not quite as impressive. They only have 2 lions and a third that could not be found. You did get up close to them though. Next, we went on a river cruise. I think that they should not even offer this. There was nothing to see and it seemed like the longest boat ride ever. It was just a fishing boat that we went on. After a wonderful lunch we went on another game drive. Saw some water buffalo this time. That was awesome. No matter how many drives we went on it seemed that we saw different things. Had sundowner with elephants. Time for dinner and bed.
Dec 23 Went on a horseback safari. It was my first time on a horse. At first I was a little nervous about it. I think that the horse could sense that. Once I got used to it, I loved it. You could get so close to the animals. Finally, saw a monkey. Next, we did a helicopter tour. I had never been in a helicopter. I loved the tour and got to see a shark and dolphin from the helicopter. Next, we did an elephant feeding. That was awesome. You got to feed the elephants apples and pellets. They loved it and ate all of the food. I would definitely recommend this place for a private game reserve safari. The staff took great care of their customers. Drove back to Cape Town from Botlierskop. What an exciting safari we went on. I know it is nothing like going to Krueger. It being my first safari, I couldn’t have asked for a better time.
